I Hoped To Feel At Home: The Story Of Elsie Strawn Armstrong, Michelle Killion Morahn

Elsie Strawn was born in 1789 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She married Joseph Armstrong in 1811 and moved to Licking County, Ohio, where she bore nine sons. In 1831, leaving Joseph behind in Ohio, she relocated to the Illinois frontier with seven of her sons. She remained there until her death in 1871. Throughout her life, Elsie wrote poetry, much of which was about her life on the two frontiers of Ohio and 11linois. Her grandson Marshall Armstrong collected these poems to preserve them for her family, and the manuscript is housed in the Illinois State Historical Library. Family members …

They enjoyed a greater role in public life through their involvement in social issues of the day and their fights for the right to vote, and they were seeking and attaining higher education in greater numbers than ever before. Most importantly, though, were the steps American women took toward more representation in the world of work. On the cusp of the Great Depression, more women entered the work force than ever before. The Octofoil is the offical publication of the Ninth Infantry Division Association, Inc., an organization formed by the officers and men of the 9th Infantry Division in order to perpetuate the memory of fallen comrades, preserve the esprit de corps of the Division, promote peace and serve as an information bureau about the 9th Infantry Division. The Association is made up of 9th Infantry veterans from WWII and Vietnam, spouses, widows and lineal descendants.
