Westchester: The American Suburb, Roger Panetta, Kenneth T. Jackson Jan 2006

Westchester: The American Suburb, Roger Panetta, Kenneth T. Jackson

New York State City & Regional

Today, more than half of Americans live in suburbs. A far cry from the “crabgrass frontier” of modest bedroom communities built for urban strivers, today’s sprawling, self-contained suburbs define our cultural landscape.

This fascinating book chronicles—in word and images—the history, development, and character of suburban America with an illuminating account of one of its signature places: Westchester, New York.

Designed as a companion to a major exhibition at The Hudson River Museum, the book brings together original essays by leading historians and other experts, and a rich selection of photographs, paintings, maps, ephemera, and other images that track more than …

March Into Oblivion, Larry C. Bolin Jan 2006

March Into Oblivion, Larry C. Bolin

Adams County History

The Whiskey Rebellion often is assigned, even by historians, to an obscurity which belies its significance. Its importance was major not only to the people most affected by its cause and those most intimately involved in the playing out of the events, but also to the young federal government, which had to demonstrate its authority yet not trample its own citizens. The situation held a very real potential for tearing apart the fragile nation. President George Washington felt strongly enough about it to involve himself personally in the beginnings of the military action. In the last few years of the …

Settling The Maine Wilderness - Moses Greenleaf, His Maps, And His Household Of Faith, 1777-1834, Walter M. Macdougall

Friends of OML, Occasional Publications

Settling the Maine Wilderness - Moses Greenleaf, His Maps, and His Household of Faith, 1777-1834.

Osher Library Associates, Occasional Publication No.3.

For professor Macdougall, this book is the culmination of over twenty-five years of research and writing carried out during breaks from teaching at the University of Maine. By examining the cultural milieu of his time, he places Greenleaf's contributions within the context of Maine's growth and development during its formative years from province to statehood. This biographer also shares a kinship with Greenleaf on several counts. First is an appreciation for the land which Greenleaf held dear, since his …
