The Theology Of Thomas Dick And Its Possible Relationship To That Of Joseph Smith, Edward T. Jones Jan 1969

The Theology Of Thomas Dick And Its Possible Relationship To That Of Joseph Smith, Edward T. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

In her attempt to find a strictly human origin for certain doctrines contained in the Book of Abraham, and the later teachings of Joseph Smith, Mrs. Fawn M. Brodie relies upon the writings of one Thomas Dick. Dick was a nineteenth century Scottish scientist-theologian who wrote several volumes on religious and scientific subjects. It is known that at least two volumes were known to at least some of the early Latter-day Saints, for passages from them were quoted in the Messenger and Advocate. The purpose of this thesis has been to research the entire ten volumes of Dick's writings …

A Study To Determine The Seminary Students' And Teachers' Understanding Of The Concept Of "Living Prophets" In Non-Credit Released Time Classes, Ray R. Louder

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine how effectively seminary teachers teach the concept of "living prophets" to students in non-credit released time and early morning seminary classes.
The study was composed of a sample of 475 seminary students in non-credit released time and early morning seminary classes, and twenty seminary teachers. Each participant answered a questionnaire to test his concept of "living prophets." The responses were tabulated and presented in written and illustrative form.
The findings showed that the teachers themselves had a clear concept of the role of "living prophets" in the church, but the concept in …

A Study Of The Definition Of The Gospel Of Jesus Christ And Its Theological Implications In Latter-Day Saint Literature, David Earl Perry Jan 1969

A Study Of The Definition Of The Gospel Of Jesus Christ And Its Theological Implications In Latter-Day Saint Literature, David Earl Perry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis attempts to treat four problems: What is the gospel, as defined in Latter-day Saint literature? Do ancient and modern sources agree? Has there been an historical development of the definitions? Can any disagreements be rationalized? The results of this research reveal that the gospel is complex in that it is capable of handling all the problems of eternity, yet it is simple in that it is a plan of specific principles which lead man step by step to perfection. The author determined that ancient and modern sources do agree in placing six "first principles" at the beginning of …

A Survey To Determine The Public Responses And Attitudes Toward The First Festival Of Mormon Art At Brigham Young University, Trevor Southey

Theses and Dissertations

A survey was conducted to determine the responses of the public to the First Festival of Mormon Art on exhibition at the Brigham Young University. Data were collected by means of questionnaires made available to gallery visitors. Through these responses it was determined that:
(1) Over three-fourths of the visiting public felt that art is important in relation to the Gospel. There was a positive correlation between the respondents' interest and experience in art and their feelings for the importance of art in relation to the Gospel.
(2) Over three-fourths of the visiting public felt that the exhibition was successful. …

A Study Of Religious Experiences As Related To Church Orthodoxy, Joel Lane Tapley Jan 1969

A Study Of Religious Experiences As Related To Church Orthodoxy, Joel Lane Tapley

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis: (1) a religious experience typology was constructed and used to discover whether or not a sequential order existed of religious experiences from the least to most intimate type, (2) the relationship between religious experiences and church orthodoxy was examined, and (3) several background variables were investigated to clarify the above relationship.

It was found 276 Mormons that religious experiences develop in a sequential order from the least to the most intimate type and that a moderate relationship exists between religious experiences and church orthodoxy. The findings support the theory which states that religious experiences and the relationship …

Race And The Institutional Church (Reading Programs In Theology), Robert L. Conrad Dec 1968

Race And The Institutional Church (Reading Programs In Theology), Robert L. Conrad

Concordia Theological Monthly

The bewildered Christian, viewing the relatively recent and rapid progress of the American Negro, may ask: ''What more does the Negro want?" The black's reply to that question is likely to be, "What have you got?" Such a reply indicates the fact that a revolution becomes more demanding as the gap is narrowed. But the gap has been narrowed only in certain respects. The Negro has made gains in having but not in belonging. In fact, things seem worse in the latter area. In view of all this, the great mass of Christians is confused and inert.

A Study Of The Approach To Delinquent Church Members, Carl E. Zahrte Nov 1968

A Study Of The Approach To Delinquent Church Members, Carl E. Zahrte

Bachelor of Divinity

One of the most difficult and distressing problems that a minister encounters today is that of dealing with delinquent church members. Those members of a congregation who become lax in their faith through neglect of the means of grace or an evident attitude of indifference in their spiritual life constitute a problem that is not easily solved. Speaking of delinquent or inactive church members, W. F. Crossland asserts: "They constitute a challenge to every church and minister and represent one of the major problems facing the Christian Church. The aim of this study, therefore, has been to examine the extent …

Notes On "Spirit-Baptism" And "Prophetic Utterance", Victor Bartling Nov 1968

Notes On "Spirit-Baptism" And "Prophetic Utterance", Victor Bartling

Concordia Theological Monthly

The two subjects in the title fall into the difficult area of Pneumatology and are prompted by what is called the modern "charismatic" or "Pentecostal" movement. Both subjects deal with the exceptional gifts of the Holy Spirit in the early church usually called "charisms" (charismata). Strictly speaking all gifts of the Spirit are supernatural, Spirit-given, hence charismatic, so, for example, also the three basic endowments granted to all Christians: faith, hope, love. In the following notes, for the sake of convenience, we shall call the exceptional gifts (for example, "speaking in tongues" and "prophecy") "charismatic," and the spiritual endowments granted …

In Many, Much, Richard R. Caemmerer Nov 1968

In Many, Much, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

Pastors of large churches have always had to suffer from well-meaning brothers who masked their sometimes subconscious envy behind a hearty "I'll bet you just wear yourself out on that big job." In addition, two movements of thought have recently bedeviled them. One is that God is dead, and perhaps the whole operation should be turned into a used-car lot. The other is that the parish is dead, that it is a shame for people to come on a Sunday and be comforted when they ought to give up all and live in tenements. In all three corrosive comments is …

Before the balloting took place at the national Republican and Democratic party conventions last August, all who watched the proceedings saw roving reporters continually buttonholing delegates, party bigwigs, and candidates, checking on rumors, inquiring about developments, asking for opinions, and frequently winding up with "What's your prediction?" The national election and the days immediately preceding it will no doubt bring many a repetition of that question.

Our Common Confession And Its Implications For Today, Robert Bertram Nov 1968

Our Common Confession And Its Implications For Today, Robert Bertram

Concordia Theological Monthly

What is it that our confession, or rather the God we confess, is revolutionizing? What is He overturning and replacing? Our sin with His righteousness? Yes, but not only that. Our old world with His new world? That too, but not only that. The tyrants and principalities of this age with His new age? Not even only that. What He is replacing is His own old order - old, yet truly His.

Marxist Humanism In Dialogue With Christianity, Richard Lischer Nov 1968

Marxist Humanism In Dialogue With Christianity, Richard Lischer

Master of Divinity Thesis

In this paper I will attempt to follow Garaudy's suggestion, mentioned above, and retain my own Christian perspective. With that factor in mind, plus an obvious limitation of space, much of the Christian doctrine of man will be presupposed.as I investigate Marxist humanism. The goal of this paper is not the isolation of two humanistic concerns but the description and analysis of their intersection.
