Totiusque Ecclesiae Suae Sanctae; A Comparison Of The Ecclesiologies Of St. Augustine And Hans Kung, Edward J. Sullivan Jan 1971

Totiusque Ecclesiae Suae Sanctae; A Comparison Of The Ecclesiologies Of St. Augustine And Hans Kung, Edward J. Sullivan

Dissertations and Theses

This paper attempts to compare the ecc1esio1ogies of the fourth century Bishop of Hippo and the controversial twentieth century theo1ogian. In doing so, a study is made of each writer independently in order to extract his conceptual models of the Church. Special significance is given to the names each attributed to the Church and the consequences of these names as they pass from an analogical to an ecc1esio1ogica1 sphere. A study is also made of the functions of office within the Church with respect to the fulfillment of specific ministries. Here the two divide, Augustine meets the Donatist challenge by …

An Evaluation Of The Adequacy Of Selected Formal Church Programs In Preparing Male Members To Enter The United States Air Force, James R. Palmer Jan 1971

An Evaluation Of The Adequacy Of Selected Formal Church Programs In Preparing Male Members To Enter The United States Air Force, James R. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Church programs in preparing young Latter-day Saint servicemen to accept and live the gospel of Jesus Christ as determined from the opinions of servicemen and bishops. The teaching programs, counseling, continual Church activity, Church publications, and the preservice and inservice Church orientations were evaluated for their effectiveness in teaching the five objectives: Testimony building; commandment living; continual activity, missionary work, and patriotism.

One hundred eighteen servicemen, who had completed basic training and were attending technical training schools, along with seventy-seven bishops provided the information used in this study. …

Critical Analysis Of Certain Apocryphal Reports In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Related By Members Of The Church, Don L. Penrod Jan 1971

Critical Analysis Of Certain Apocryphal Reports In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints As Related By Members Of The Church, Don L. Penrod

Theses and Dissertations

From time to time some members of the Church knowingly or ignorantly circulate fallacious stories, rumors, or unsubstantiated reports of a sensational nature, which become more injurious than constructive. Also problems arise when the record of a person's spiritual experiences is published about by others. Often such material becomes garbled as it is passed from person to person.

This study investigates some of these rumors and stories in an attempt to discern if there is any truth in them and to present statements of General Authorities as to the position the Church takes, if any, concerning the stories embraced in …

Pray Anyway, Raymond C. Schulze Dec 1970

Pray Anyway, Raymond C. Schulze

Concordia Theological Monthly

How Professor Hoyer arrived at the title "Pray Any Way" is an illustration, however poor, of part of today's talk. When we were talking about this on the phone, I gave him the title "Pray Anyway” - and it came through to him "Pray Any Way." As with prayer itself, one wonders: Was the connection poor? When I saw the thing in print, I wondered: Was there anyone on the other end? Did the one who answered hear what I said but then disagree and write, "Pray Any Way" anyway?

Erasmus-Luther: One Theology, One Method, Two Results, Gottfried G. Krodel Nov 1970

Erasmus-Luther: One Theology, One Method, Two Results, Gottfried G. Krodel

Concordia Theological Monthly

Luther and Erasmus were both biblical humanists, both affirmed the grace of God as central, but each constructed a different theological system. Erasmus always regarded theology as a descriptive task, best advanced by continuous disputations. Luther saw the Gospel as the crystal-clear center of Scripture, the saving knowledge revealed by God. Because of this conviction, Luther viewed theology as the task of making assertions, of boldly confessing one's faith.

Editorial: Today’S Challenge To The Church, Lloyd H. Goetz

Concordia Theological Monthly

The church has never had any other challenge than that of the Great Commission, and it ought to anticipate no new responsibilities or opportunities in the decade ahead. Nor could any task be more difficult and meaningful than that of continuing Christ's ministry.
