Luther And Calvin On Human Reason, Young Ik Kim Jun 1971

Luther And Calvin On Human Reason, Young Ik Kim

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

My purpose in writing this thesis is not to offer a total discussion of every aspect of Luther's or Calvin's views on human reason and its powers and functions, but rather to compare the positions or the two Reformers after presenting an adequate summary or the position or each.

This article is an inquiry into the meaning of Charisma in the Sacred Scriptures and the early church, with special reference to the relation of charisma to the "things having to do with the Spirit" (pneumatika) of 1 Cor. 12-14, to the Christian community, to "prophecy," and to the sacred ministry.

A Systematic-Historical Study Of The Policy Of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod With Respect To Fraternal Organizations In The Past Fifty Years, George F. Lobien Jun 1971

A Systematic-Historical Study Of The Policy Of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod With Respect To Fraternal Organizations In The Past Fifty Years, George F. Lobien

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The purpose of this research was to accurately ascertain the policy and practice of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod with respect to fraternal organizations-usually called lodges or secret societies in its literature-at specific times throughout its history. If any changes in policy or practice were discovered, these were to be noted so that trends might become apparent and causes for change might be discovered.

Furthermore, it was the intention of the author to reach a judgment as to why The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod is as concerned with the issue of fraternal organizations as its literature demonstrates it to be. Conclusions also …

The Christology Of Martin Luther King, Jr., Kenneth Joseph Stumpf May 1971

The Christology Of Martin Luther King, Jr., Kenneth Joseph Stumpf

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis will examine whether King personally followed that challenge in his thought as well as deed and it will do so by centering the analysis on his understanding of the Christian faith's cornerstone-Jesus Christ. The study will commence by sketching the ecclesiastical and geographical background from which King emerged. Next will be a survey of the major intellectual influences upon his theological positions and personal faith. Only after this extensive but essential prologue will the thesis address itself directly to its chief task of analyzing his Christology with sections on the theistic nature of God, the incarnation of God …

Differences In The Attitudes Of Church-Attending Catholics Toward Changes In Religious Beliefs And Practices Correlated With Age And Education, Cletus Michael Kirkpatrick May 1971

Differences In The Attitudes Of Church-Attending Catholics Toward Changes In Religious Beliefs And Practices Correlated With Age And Education, Cletus Michael Kirkpatrick

Dissertations and Theses

A field survey was conducted to investigate differences in attitudes toward religious changes in a population of church-going Roman Catholics. An attitude scale comprising twenty items referring to changes in the Catholic Church was prepared during pilot studies. Half of the items referred to changes already occurring, and half to proposed or possible future changes. The attitude scale was administered to a sample of parishes in the Roman Catholic diocese of Baker, Oregon. It was administered during regular Sunday services to take advantage of the saliency effect of group membership.

A response to an item of the scale indicating the …

Some Theological Aspects Of Roman Catholic Responses To Lowland Filipino Spirit-World Beliefs, David John Schneider May 1971

Some Theological Aspects Of Roman Catholic Responses To Lowland Filipino Spirit-World Beliefs, David John Schneider

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is to discover the nature of lowland Filipinos’ spirit-world beliefs, from the pre-Spanish era to the present, and to discover theological aspects in the responses or Roman Catholic churchmen to the spirit-world beliefs.

In serving as a Christian pastor to the lowland Filipinos from 1961 to 1970, the writer observed that some people felt spirit beings to be quite active in their lives. He also felt a lack of Christian resources, either Philippine or American, with which to minister to such people. This study was undertaken to determine what resources, if any, the Christian Church …

The Word And The Confessions In The Lutheran Church In America Confession Of Faith Of 1962 - A Historical Approach, Thomas Roy Mccrone May 1971

The Word And The Confessions In The Lutheran Church In America Confession Of Faith Of 1962 - A Historical Approach, Thomas Roy Mccrone

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the purpose of this study to examine this last point, the Lutheran Church in America's position on the Word and the Confessions, as this is established in its "Confession of Faith" of 1962. Such an examination, however, poses certain difficulties because of the merger and consensus nature of the Lutheran Church in America. The "Confession of Faith" was not drafted in a theological and historical vacuum. Behind it stand several major theological controversies and almost one hundred and fifty years of doctrinal development within the Muhlenberg strain of American Lutheranism, and shorter but no less important developments within …

Literary Models In Biblical Hermeneutics, Robert Drake May 1971

Literary Models In Biblical Hermeneutics, Robert Drake

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this paper we will examine, in survey fashion the hermeneutical programs formulated by supernatural orthodoxy,1 the natural religion school,2 and the attempts to find an alternative to these in the post-Enlightenment period of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A preliminary overview is in order to map out the direction of the discussion and to suggest a common uncritical assumption held by all major programs, viz, the use of non-biblical literary models for interpreting the immanent character of the Scriptures.

1. Orthodoxy has reference to the Protestant interpretation of the Bible which accepted the possibility of divine intervention …

The Edifying Word: The Word Of Hope, Paul G. Bretscher Mar 1971

The Edifying Word: The Word Of Hope, Paul G. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

Psalm 130 serves as the basis for this exhortation to the church to edify one another in the hope of the Gospel, whose word of promise alone establishes our election, our eschatology, and our ethos. The author places liberal theology and form criticism into proper historical perspective and suggests ways for the church, especially his own synod, to turn contemporary turmoil into blessing.
