Apostolicity And Ministry, Reginald H. Fuller Feb 1972

Apostolicity And Ministry, Reginald H. Fuller

Concordia Theological Monthly

This article was delivered in substantially this form at the Episcopal-Lutheran dialog on April 15, 1971, together with the one by Dr. Carl S. Meyer. Dr. Fuller surveys the evidence of the New Testament and concludes that the historic episcopate belongs to the essential marks of the church in the same way that the authoritative, historical canon of the Word does.

Apostolicity And Ministry: A Lutheran View, Carl S. Meyer Feb 1972

Apostolicity And Ministry: A Lutheran View, Carl S. Meyer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The author presents an historical survey of the Lutheran view of the ministry, with special emphasis on The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and concludes that the historic episcopate does not exist jure divino, and that fidelity to the apostolic Word is essential, not fidelity to apostolic succession.

The One Eucharist For The One World, Arthur Carl Piepkorn Feb 1972

The One Eucharist For The One World, Arthur Carl Piepkorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

After describing the private character of the Eucharist, Dr. Piepkorn defends its public character with four observations. (1) The humanity of Jesus Christ is present and this unites Him and the worshiper with all humanity. (2) The Christ who is present is the Creator of all things. (3) Christ and His Father have compassion for the whole world and employ many worldly means to bring life to people. (4) The Eucharist is designed to prepare us for service to the world.

Rudolph Bultmann At Syracuse, Gabriel Vahanian

The Courier

The most distinguished Visiting Professor Syracuse University has had through its Department of Religion (1958-59), Rudolf Bultmann, born in 1884, still dominates the field of New Testament Studies. The University can take exceptional pride in having conferred upon him an honorary doctorate. In addition, the University Library is now the richer for being the recipient of a vast collection of materials originating from Professor Bultmann's eminent public career as well as from his personal life. The correspondence henceforth treasured by the Manuscripts Department of Syracuse University Library contains letters to and from the young promising theologians of the sixties as …

Do The Lutheran Symbolical Books Speak Where The Sacred Scriptures Are Silent?, Arthur Carl Piepkorn Jan 1972

Do The Lutheran Symbolical Books Speak Where The Sacred Scriptures Are Silent?, Arthur Carl Piepkorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

An introduction to some of the problems raised by the fact that the Lutheran Symbolical Books on occasion use nonbiblical concepts, draw their metaphors from nonbiblical sources, go beyond the Biblical materials, extract doctrine from textually dubious Bible passages, use an allegorizing hermeneutical method, and give a specifically "Lutheran" interpretation to certain Biblical terms and texts.

Ethical Individualism In Clement Of Alexandria, David Paulsen Jan 1972

Ethical Individualism In Clement Of Alexandria, David Paulsen

Concordia Theological Monthly

It has been noted that Clement of Alexandria (ca. 150-215 A. D.) diverges sharply from primitive Christianity in important respects, such as his views on eschatology and the significance of the Law. It is my contention that Clement also diverges from almost the entire previous Christian tradition as far as we know it in the matter of ethics, in that he places individual perfection above communal concerns such as love and justice.
