Personal Knowledge And The Inner Sciences, Martin Zwick Mar 1985

Personal Knowledge And The Inner Sciences, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

One significant but not widely appreciated impact of the “new religions” has been to reopen the question of the relation of religion to science. I speak of new religions in the sense defined by Needleman in his book by that title, that is, I am referring primarily to Eastern teachings which have gained adherents and cultural influence in the West over the past two decades. To some degree, certain of these religious systems can be viewed as encompassing “sciences” with well-articulated theories and powerful technologies, and it is this particular perspective on these religious movements which I would like here …

Labor Room Or Morgue: The Power And Limits Of Pluralism And Christology, Patrick R. Keifert Jan 1985

Labor Room Or Morgue: The Power And Limits Of Pluralism And Christology, Patrick R. Keifert

Faculty Publications

Professor Wilson is right, “Christological reflection is crossing a threshold...entering an unfamiliar room.” My response focuses his point by posing a question and proposing an answer. Is this new room a labor room or a morgue? Will christological reflection in this room labor and give birth to a new and vibrant orthodoxy and orthopraxis? Or will it die shy and embarrassed for lack of moral and spiritual fortitude, or intellectual and practical wisdom? The answer to the question of morgue or labor room lies in marking the powers and limits of christology and pluralism.

Receiving Holy Callings, And Being Wholly Responsive, Paul N. Anderson Jan 1985

Receiving Holy Callings, And Being Wholly Responsive, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

"What does it mean to receive a holy calling?" That's a good question! Whereas "holy" is an adjective, describing the just and loving character of God, a "calling" is the activity by which we are encountered by God in a way which transforms ourselves and our reasons for being. The image associated with a calling is an invitation to come and join another person in a task and into a personal relationship. Notice how a calling is the opposite of a command or an order. An order sends someone away with a task to be completed (Keleuo). A calling, however …

The Stations Of The Cross: A Calculated Trap?, Susan D. Shantz Jan 1985

The Stations Of The Cross: A Calculated Trap?, Susan D. Shantz

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A popular Catholic devotion most familiar in images, texts, and rituals, the Stations of the Cross contains the via cruces paradigm which is at the heart of Western Christian culture. In the following text an account of the historical development of the fourteen episode devotion provides a framework from which to examine in detail four visual interpretations of the Stations of the Cross by contemporary Canadian artists. The unusual serial nature and mythic content of the sequence lent a more ritualistic quality to the creative process of each artist so that, in the extended time and space spent working on …

The Son Of The Morning And The Guardian Cherub In The Context Of The Controversy Between Good And Evil, Jose M. Bertoluci Jan 1985

The Son Of The Morning And The Guardian Cherub In The Context Of The Controversy Between Good And Evil, Jose M. Bertoluci

Dissertations

Problem. Isaiah 14:12-15 and Ezekiel 28:12-19 have been used, since the times of the Church Fathers, to explain the origin of sin in the universe, and interpreted as depicting the fall of Satan from heaven. However, through the years--especially from the end of the nineteenth century and on--theologians have affirmed that those passages report historical events, making use of mythological material in their narratives; and therefore have not to do with the origin of sin or Satan. It is the aim of this dissertation to verify these claims.

Method and Results. Chapter 1 reviews the interpretations of the passages from …

Desecration And Defilement In The Old Testament, Nilton Dutra Amorim Jan 1985

Desecration And Defilement In The Old Testament, Nilton Dutra Amorim

Dissertations

Problem. The Hebrew roots hll and tm' have been translated interchangeably by desecration or defilement. Since the root hll is used in opposition to the root qds, while tm' stands in opposition to thr, it remained to be investigated whether their equation is justified because they appear in parallel or whether they should be visualized as belonging to two different realms and having different meanings.

Method. My approach was basically a synchronical word study. All the appearances of the roots hll and tm' in the OT were analyzed. The roots hnp and g'l as well as some secondary roots related …

Faith And Works In Ellen G. White's Doctrine Of The Last Judgment, Jairyong Lee Jan 1985

Faith And Works In Ellen G. White's Doctrine Of The Last Judgment, Jairyong Lee

Dissertations

This research studies the relationship between faith and works as the grounds of the last judgment in the thought of Ellen G. White.

Chapter I forms the introduction to this research.

Chapter II sketches the historical and theological milieu of the Adventist movement in nineteenth-century North America as the background for the formation of Ellen White's concept of the last judgment. As one of the ardent followers of William Miller, Ellen White had been influenced considerably by Millerite leaders in the formation of her eschatological foundation. Many of her own positions related to the judgment scene, such as the Day …

The Temporal-Eternal Continuum Of C.S. Lewis, Paul Medford Knowles Jan 1985

The Temporal-Eternal Continuum Of C.S. Lewis, Paul Medford Knowles

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis is a discussion of C.S. Lewis’s unique eschatological concept, the temporal-eternal continuum, primarily through detailed descriptions of his geographical metaphor, the borderlands of heaven. Lewis believed that he had discovered, both in his own experience and in the shared history of humanity, evidence of such a continuum, a direct path from the temporal to the eternal; a path that is followed in the present, and not merely anticipated as appearing at the climactic moment of one’s death. Each person has already taken his place on that continuum, and will hold that position unless a choice is made to …

Early Mormon Millenarianism: Another Look, Grant Underwood Jan 1985

Early Mormon Millenarianism: Another Look, Grant Underwood

Theses and Dissertations

Whether in its earliest or its most recent formulations, Mormon millennialism is essentially premillennial. At no time can it be considered postmillennial or a millennial. Along with a millenarian ideology, Latter-day Saints of the 1830s maintained a polarized perception of society and salvation. Apparently, it was not until the 1840s that Mormons began to explore the millennial implications of the "Vision" of the three degrees of glory. Other strands of thought unique to the earliest years of Mormonism are also considered. Furthermore, it is shown how millenarianism informed Mormon perceptions of Native Americans, missionary work, persecution, the Apostasy, and Zion. …

The Metaphysical & Epistemological Theories Of C.S. Lewis, Richard Ryals Nov 1984

The Metaphysical & Epistemological Theories Of C.S. Lewis, Richard Ryals

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

C. S. Lewis is very concerned about the naturalist assumptions which underlie much of modern knowledge. He attempts to show that the naturalist philosophy, when taken to its logical conclusion, undermines the validity of our reasoning processes and our moral judgments. He then attempts to offer an alternative philosophy which can serve as an adequate basis for our reasoning and ethics.

Lewis sees three basic metaphysical possibilities: naturalism, dualism, and theism. Naturalism views the natural process as the ultimate reality. Everything that exists is either a part of or a product of this process. Dualism asserts that there are two …
