Called Back To Stewardship: Recovering And Developing Abraham Kuyper's Cosmic Pneumatology, Vincent Bacote
Called Back To Stewardship: Recovering And Developing Abraham Kuyper's Cosmic Pneumatology, Vincent Bacote
Journal for Christian Theological Research
Abraham Kuyper's cosmic pneumatology provides an indispenable resource for the contemporary systematic development of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Though contemporary scholars have attended to this neglected aspect of pneumatology, there has been inadequate development of the ecological, cultural, and sociopolitical implications of the relation between the Spirit and creation. In Kuyper's cosmic pneumatology, the Spirit completes the creative act, animates all of life, and restrains the effects of sin in the world. This understanding of the Spirit/creation relationship overlaps with Kuyper's understanding of common grace, thus making the Spirit the agent of common grace. This grace provides the …

Contemptus Mundi—Redux: The Politics Of An Ancient Rhetorics And Worldview, Vincent L. Wimbush
Contemptus Mundi—Redux: The Politics Of An Ancient Rhetorics And Worldview, Vincent L. Wimbush
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
Contemptus mundi (contempt for the world) is an expression that captures rather poignantly the complex of attitudes, behaviors and rhetorics associated with groups that were part of many different cultures of Greco-Roman antiquity and beyond. An examination of some of the late ancient evidence and the methodological issues involved will afford me the opportunity to engage an aspect of the issues raised by Bloom and may provide a different perspective on American culture.

Effects Of Variant Narrators In Acts 10-11, William Kurz
Effects Of Variant Narrators In Acts 10-11, William Kurz
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
One of the cruces interpretum regarding the Acts of the Apostles that continue to reappear in scholarly discussions is why some stories are repeated three or more times. Redaction criticism moved the solutions beyond the earlier theories of multiple sources toward a consensus of attributing repetition to Lukan redaction. One contribution from redactional approaches was the awareness of how emphasis is achieved by repeating accounts of events that are especially pivotal to the overall plot of Acts.
Thoughts On A Movement, Gary L. Mcintosh
Thoughts On A Movement, Gary L. Mcintosh
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
This article is the Presidential Address given at the annual conference of the American Society for Church Growth held in Houston, Texas in November 1994. Using Dr. Vaughan’s 1993 presidential address as a springboard, Dr. Gary L. McIntosh conducted a year long survey to determine the attitudes toward the Church Growth Movement among pastors, denominational executives, and members of the ASCG. The complete updated results of that survey are printed here for the first time.
The Sitz Im Leben Of The Johannine Bread Of Life Discourse And Its Evolving Context, Paul N. Anderson
The Sitz Im Leben Of The Johannine Bread Of Life Discourse And Its Evolving Context, Paul N. Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The thesis of this study is that because the Johannine Bread of Life Discourse reflects an exhortative homiletical unit, connecting the ministry of Jesus with ongoing crises affecting the Johannine community of faith, an investigation into the rhetorical thrust of its message will illumine—and be illumined by—one’s understanding of the Johannine situation and its evolving context. More specifically, as the central exhortative thrust of the discourse is “Work not for food that is death-producing, but for the food that is life-producing—eternally, which the Son of Man shall give you” (v. 27), the misunderstanding dialogues between Jesus and four groups of …
