Do The Prophets Teach That Babylonia Will Be Rebuilt In The Eschaton, Homer Heater Jan 1998

Do The Prophets Teach That Babylonia Will Be Rebuilt In The Eschaton, Homer Heater

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Dispensationalists have traditionally argued that "Babylon" in Revelation 14 and chaps. 17-18 is a symbol indicating some form of reestablished Rome. * In recent days a renewed interest has been shown in the idea that the ancient empire of Babylonia and city of Babylon will be rebuilt.2 This conclusion comes from a reading of the prophets—Isaiah and Jeremiah in particular—in a manner that requires the rebuilding of the city and empire of Babylonia in the eschaton.

My approach to this question is from three different perspectives: (1) to study the context of the oracles against the nations (OAN) found in …

Forgiveness: The Key To Spiritual Warfare, Jerry L. Graham Jan 1998

Forgiveness: The Key To Spiritual Warfare, Jerry L. Graham

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Among the many barriers to church growth is an unforgiving spirit in the congregation. Jerry Graham’s article on “Forgiveness: The Key To Spiritual Warfare” completes this issue of the journal in fine fashion. His article is not a rehash of teaching on forgiveness but rather a revealing look at how forgiveness and spiritual warfare are related.

Contested Moralities: Animals And Moral Value In The Dear/Symanski Debate, William S. Lynn Jan 1998

Contested Moralities: Animals And Moral Value In The Dear/Symanski Debate, William S. Lynn

Human and Animal Bonding Collection

Geography is experiencing a ‘moral turn’ in its research interests and practices. There is also a flourishing interest in animal geographies that intersects this turn, and is concurrent with wider scholarly efforts to reincorporate animals and nature into our ethical and social theories. This article intervenes in a dispute between Michael Dear and Richard Symanski. The dispute is over the culling of wild horses in Australia, and I intervene to explore how geography deepens our moral understanding of the animal/human dialectic. I begin by situating the inquiry into ethics and animals in geography. Next, I provide a synopsis of Dear …

William Edwin Boardman (1810-1886): Evangelist Of The Higher Christian Life, Roy Leonard Williams Jan 1998

William Edwin Boardman (1810-1886): Evangelist Of The Higher Christian Life, Roy Leonard Williams

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

The Presbyterian evangelist, William Edwin Boardman (1810-1886), has received limited attention in studies related to the American and British holiness movements. The attention he has received has been limited to his connection to other topics. The available analyses of his doctrine of sanctification does not clearly define the connection between his message and other nineteenth-century holiness theologies. Furthermore, these analyses of Boardman's message are generally based on a limited use of the primary sources. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze Boardman's dextrine of sanctification in relation to the mid-nineteenth century American and British theological milieu. Attention will be …

Biblical Hermeneutics And Hebraism In The Early Seventeenth Century As Reflected In The Work Of John Weemse (1579-1636), Jai Sung Shim Jan 1998

Biblical Hermeneutics And Hebraism In The Early Seventeenth Century As Reflected In The Work Of John Weemse (1579-1636), Jai Sung Shim

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation presents a contextual and historical understanding of hermeneutics and exegesis in the early seventeenth century, in the form of a study of the biblical exegete and Hebraist, John Weemse of Lathocker and Prebend of Durham. This study argues both for the continuity of early seventeenth-century biblical exegesis with Reformation exegesis and for the progress of Protestant exegesis after the Reformation. In substantial similarity to the Reformers with regard to the doctrine of Scripture and to exegetical principles, the foundation of Weemse's exegesis was reading Scripture in its original languages. He enriched his efforts through grammatical and textual studies …
