Mary's Magnificat: Sources And Themes, Lawrence Frizzell

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

In the 1961 meeting of this Society, the Basilian biblical scholar, James Terence Forestell, reflected upon the biblical background of the Magnificat. He declared that it is not merely a patchwork quilt of Old Testament texts. "The Magnificat is a new hymn with its own unity of inspiration, but the words do reflect a whole stream of O.T. piety, which is not to be isolated in a few texts." He studied the background possibilities in the Jewish Scriptures for every significant term in the hymn.I will stand with him against the assessment of the Jesuit Scripture scholar, Joseph A. Fitzmyer, …

Spiritual Factors Impacting Church Health And Growth In The 21st Century, Ray W. Ellis Jan 1999

Spiritual Factors Impacting Church Health And Growth In The 21st Century, Ray W. Ellis

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The topic of this President’s address at the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Church Growth is “Spiritual Factors that Impact Church Health and Growth.” My purpose is to show that church growth is about growth of the Kingdom of God. Numerical growth and spiritual growth are not incompatible. Church growth is about numerical growth. Church growth is about sharpening skills and utilizing technology to carry out the great commission. Church growth is about redemptive growth. Church Growth is more than numbers, it is the supernatural work of God.

Spiritual Formation In The Twenty-First Century, Maria Ovando-Gibson Jan 1999

Spiritual Formation In The Twenty-First Century, Maria Ovando-Gibson

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

In former years we spoke of Christian education in our churches and seminaries today, the words spiritual formation, Christian formation, faith development, spiritual maturity, the Spiritual life and disciplines are terms used to describe the developmental, processing, growing, and intentional maturing of the Christian faith in our personal life, journey or pilgrimage. Having characterized the above, the question I am still asked the most is, “but what does this really mean and how would you define spiritual formation?” After years of study and reflection in this field, I would describe spiritual formation as that awesome work of the Holy Spirit …

Religious Women, Medical Settings, And Moral Risk, Peggy Desautels Jan 1999

Religious Women, Medical Settings, And Moral Risk, Peggy Desautels

Philosophy Faculty Publications

As we think about the ethical issues surrounding women and aging, it is important to ask the following questions. What do women in our society actually experience at various stages of their life cycle? Which of these I experiences put women at moral risk? In what situations are women's senses of moral value and selfhood likely to be ignored or discounted? I, along with a number of feminist philosophers, advocate approaching feminist ethics by starting with women's actual situations and experiences.1 No doubt, a wide variety of aging women's experiences call for moral analysis. I focus here on the …

The Sedes Sapientiae: Orthodox Sculptural Images Of The Virgin Mary Derived From The Ancient Mother-Goddess Tradition, Carol King Jan 1999

The Sedes Sapientiae: Orthodox Sculptural Images Of The Virgin Mary Derived From The Ancient Mother-Goddess Tradition, Carol King

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Virgin Mary is rarely mentioned in the Bible yet legends about her abound throughout the centuries. Worship of the Virgin is recorded as early as the 3rd century, and soon thereafter visual representations emerged to serve as devotional objects for her patrons. Mary’s popularity among the people left the Church with a fundamental problem: they must either sanction her worship and bring the pagans into their fold; or they must diminish her role in salvation, totally rid Christianity of the female divine, and risk losing converts to older-world traditions. This dilemma was settled at the Council of Ephesus in …

What Are The Main Boundaries For The Evangelical Church And How Can We Best Address Our Major Issues?, Elmer L. Towns

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The following question will give direction to this paper. How far into the study of secular leadership can the church go to determine biblical church leadership (the John Maxwell leadership question)? How far into marketing can the church go to determine methods of communicating the church message (the George Barna marketing question)? How far can the church go in stretching its Sunday gathering to accommodate unsaved clientele (the Bill Hybels seeker question)? How far can the church go in heeding intuitive authority apart from biblical revelation (the C. Peter Wagner New Apostolic question)? How far can the church go in …

Perspectives On The Church And Church Growth Theory, Charles Van Engen Jan 1999

Perspectives On The Church And Church Growth Theory, Charles Van Engen

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Because we will be talking about the church and its nature during this conference, I thought it might be good for us to be reminded of some basic characteristics of the church and the various ways the church has seen itself. At the risk of oversimplification, I would like to briefly survey ten broad perspectives on the Church which one may derive from the Church’s history and relate them to Church Growth theory. The ten perspectives mentioned in this paper are in no way meant to be exhaustive of the multiple ways one may view the Church. I do not …

The Aporetic Witness, Susan L. Trollinger

The opportunity that this shift from modernity to postmodernity may have opened for faith to speak to reason has not gone unnoticed by theologians. Indeed a number of what we might call poshnodern theologians have advocated various ways that Christians ought to wihless in their contemporary context. However, because these theologians have tended to mistake our postmodern world for a pluralistic world, they also have tended to write theologies that promote cultural security over faithful witness.

Religious Attitudes Toward Cloning: A Tale Of Two Creatures, Dena S. Davis Jan 1999

Religious Attitudes Toward Cloning: A Tale Of Two Creatures, Dena S. Davis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

This Essay offers one analytic structure with which to approach the study of religious responses to cloning and suggests that, whereas the negative reactions are tied to a Frankenstein approach--that is, one which uses all the horror of that myth to express our fears about humans getting into the creation business--the more positive reactions express what I will call the Golem approach, based on a lesser-known legend.
