Becoming Mormon Men: Male Rites Of Passage And The Rise Of Mormonism In Nineteenth-Century America, Bruce R. Lott Jan 2000

Becoming Mormon Men: Male Rites Of Passage And The Rise Of Mormonism In Nineteenth-Century America, Bruce R. Lott

Theses and Dissertations

The evidence presented in this thesis supports a view of the first Mormon men as coming from the agrarian majority of early nineteenth-century American farmers and artisans who embraced a set of manly ideals that differed significantly, in many ways, from those embraced by their middle-class contemporaries. These men's life writings attest to boyhood experiences of working alongside their fathers as soon as they were physically able, and subsequently of acting as substitute farmers and breadwinners as well as being put out to work outside the direct supervision of their fathers. Such experiences enabled them to frequently follow in the …

Children Of Adam, Children Of God: Christian Nurture In Early Nineteenth-Century America, Margaret Bendroth Jan 2000

Children Of Adam, Children Of God: Christian Nurture In Early Nineteenth-Century America, Margaret Bendroth

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Contemporary attitudes toward children are, in many ways, social and theological products of the early nineteenth century. Like their Victorian predecessors, modern Americans sentimentalize and celebrate children, but they also entertain some fundamental doubts about their true nature. Indeed, recent anxieties about children, following a chain of bloody schoolyard shootings, have brought some old theological questions, raised in debate a century and a half ago, into sharp relief. While most American parents today do not worry whether their smiling babe is destined for an eternal lake of fire, the growing popularity of v-chips and parental-control software suggests an active suspicion …

The Doctrine Of Certainty In The Islamic Methods Of Inference, Soualhi Yunus Jan 2000

The Doctrine Of Certainty In The Islamic Methods Of Inference, Soualhi Yunus

Student Works (2000-2009)

This thesis is an articulate study on the modes of inference in the legal field. Observing the huge legacy left by early and modem jurists on Usul al-Fiqh, one would find that the rules promulgated to regulate the operation of Ijtihad appears vacillating between certainty and uncertainty. A thorough examination of the criteria set by jurists to determine the accuracy of the legal proofs suggests that every thing appears to have been comprehensively tackled except "Certainty". A lack of an adequate theorization for certainty in the legal field is exactly what has prompted us to venture into this thesis. This …

Among the 'mutakallimin' (teolog). they inclined to use their own concept ' dalil' regarding nature as an evidence to prove the existence of God. Without his prior consent, the whole world of nature would not be a existence. With this concept. it reveals that this would is 'new' ie. From non-existence to existence, whilst Allah are caisidered 'qadim ' (Forever Will Remain). lbn Sina (w. 1037m) was among the 'failasur who quite disagree with this concept. To him, …

Luther And "Social Ethics", Terrance Adamson Dec 1999

Luther And "Social Ethics", Terrance Adamson

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

For Luther, it appears, that there is a distinction between an office of authority and the office holder. The office holder is the same as any other Christian with the same divine command to "love" in and through his call. Instruction and Christian admonition to the individual regarding faith and Christian duty does not, in itself, violate the distinction between Law and Gospel.

Love And Longing In Devotional Hinduism, Nancy M. Martin Dec 1999

I would now like to explore one current within this broad river of tradition - the devotional or bhakti path. The passionate love shared by devotee and God that is the driving force of …
