"We Are The Remnant": A Historical, Biblical, And Theological Analysis Of Seventh-Day Adventist Ecclesiological Self-Understanding, Stephan Paul Mitchell Sep 1988

"We Are The Remnant": A Historical, Biblical, And Theological Analysis Of Seventh-Day Adventist Ecclesiological Self-Understanding, Stephan Paul Mitchell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis addresses the problem of Seventh-day Adventism's claim to comprise the final "remnant" church of Bible prophecy. The traditional emphasis within the church has been to lay exclusive claims upon the "remnant" of Revelation 12:17, God's last true church, on the basis that (a) Adventism exists in the "last days," (b) keeping the commandments of God" refers to their unique emphasis on the seventh-day Sabbath, (c) "having the testimony of Jesus" describes their possession of the gift of prophecy manifest in the life and work of Ellen G. White, and (d) God has given this church the task of …

Divine Judgment In The Book Of Revelation, James E. Shipp Jun 1988

Divine Judgment In The Book Of Revelation, James E. Shipp

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Judgment themes in the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament are described and classified. Special attention is given to recurring themes of remedial judgment and annihilation. John's Revelation is analyzed for consistency of judgment themes, and John's theology of judgment is compared and contrasted with other scriptural sources. It is concluded that John described God as the. active judge in human history. John's theology of judgment includes remedial judgment where physical or natural calamities are intended to lead people to repentance, and final judgment where lost souls are annihilated. John's Revelation is seen to be devoid of forensic or courtroom …

The Role And Place Of Women In The Evangelical Lutheran Church In Tanzania--Mbulu Synod In The Light Of The New Testament, Daniel Daudi May 1988

The Role And Place Of Women In The Evangelical Lutheran Church In Tanzania--Mbulu Synod In The Light Of The New Testament, Daniel Daudi

Master of Art Theology Thesis

As noted at the outset, the main purpose of this research is to relieve the confusion in the ELCT—Mbulu Synod about the role and place of women. However, in order to give a broad overview of the place of, it is important that materials on women be presented both in their positive and negative details, because the ELCT Mbulu Synod has emphasized negative examples and passages from the Bible concerning women rather than positive examples which do exist. It is accepted that the Bible is the written Word of God worthy of the closest attention and which demands our obedience. …

Lutheranism In Maine 1741-1986, Ingo Dutzmann May 1988

Lutheranism In Maine 1741-1986, Ingo Dutzmann

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

My purpose in this writing is very simple. First, to tell the story for the first time. Second, to establish and comment upon basic demographic data for Lutheranism in Maine and to provide brief overviews of every Lutheran congregation in Maine to date. And third, to make some observations about the practical and theological state of the Lutheran denominations in Maine especially with reference to the establishment of the new Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, as it may relate to the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

The Proclamation Of The Gospel In Word And Sacraments, Clifford Frederich May 1988

The Proclamation Of The Gospel In Word And Sacraments, Clifford Frederich

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The burden of this thesis is to demonstrate that when the Gospel is preached properly preaching functions as a means of divine grace. Furthermore, not only can preaching be a means of grace, but it should be.

A Study Of German Lutheran Communion Hymnody The Early Years, Paul Becker May 1988

A Study Of German Lutheran Communion Hymnody The Early Years, Paul Becker

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The goal of this thesis is to demonstrate that in the early years of Lutheranism, what the faithful sang and confessed about the Sacrament of the Altar is dangerously close to being forgotten by American Lutherans in the latter half of the twentieth century. What Christians sing about as they are given the body and blood of their risen Lord reveals both their confessional stance and their piety. By digging into the treasure-store of German Lutheran Communion hymnody, the theology of the Sacrament as confessed in the early years of Lutheranism will be brought to light and offered to the …

The Apostolic Tradition- A Study Of The Texts And Origins, And Its Eucharistic Teachings With A Special Exploration Of The Ethiopic Version, Eshetu Abate May 1988

The Apostolic Tradition- A Study Of The Texts And Origins, And Its Eucharistic Teachings With A Special Exploration Of The Ethiopic Version, Eshetu Abate

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This study will engage only one piece of the great body of material that is ours by way of the Ethiopic tradition. What we know of the inter-testamental period and of early Christianity would be poorer without what comes to us through the Ethiopic tradition, both where it overlaps with other traditions, and where it is unique. Among its unique witnesses of the inter-testamental period are Jubliees, 1 Book of Enoch and the Ascension of Isaiah. Of these the complete text is provided only by their Ethiopic versions. The traditions of the Early Church preserved in the Ethiopic tradition are …

A Theological Assessment Of Minjung Theology, Systematically And Biblically, Yong Wha Na May 1988

A Theological Assessment Of Minjung Theology, Systematically And Biblically, Yong Wha Na

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

It is imperative for the church of Christ Jesus to teach and preach all the contents of the gospel systematically and biblically (Matt. 28:20). Therefore, if the churches emptied of the material contents of the gospel, it cannot stand at all.

This thesis attempts to show how seriously minjung theology deviates from the true teachings of the Scriptures. And, at the same time, this thesis contrasts the teachings of minjung theology with the Scriptural meanings of the gospel, with the goal that we should be sure of the fact that the kingdom of God can be planted only by the …

The "Ten Words", James R. Luck Jr Apr 1988

The "Ten Words", James R. Luck Jr

Honors Theses

One of the most exciting trends in the field of religion today is the continuing development of the late-in-coming Jewish-Christian dialogue. It is hoped that as the two groups continue to approach each other in open inquiry - emphasizing both those beliefs that unite the groups in spirit, as well as those which distinguish them as separate faiths - the resulting experience would enhance the lives of Jews and Christians alike.

One of the fields of academic study which naturally lends itself to this type of dialogue is the Hebrew Scriptures; more familiar in the Christian context as the "Old …

The Covenantal Significance Of Remembrance As It Is Used In Luke 22:19, Mark Steiner Mar 1988

The Covenantal Significance Of Remembrance As It Is Used In Luke 22:19, Mark Steiner

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Remembrance, depending upon its subjects and objects, can have condemnatory as well as salvific ramifications. Secondly, there is not total agreement on who the subject of remembrance is in the Words of Institution. For some, God was intended to be the subject of the remembering rather than the disciples. The strengths and weaknesses of this position will be weighed.

Finally, a concluding word is in order. The purpose of this study is to present evidence which would support the thesis that remembrance does indeed have covenantal significance. Consequently, if the word has covenantal significance, then more attention must be paid …

Study Of The Pioneers Of Providence, Utah And Their Children, Hazel Mclean Tibbitts Jan 1988

Study Of The Pioneers Of Providence, Utah And Their Children, Hazel Mclean Tibbitts

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis poses a number of questions about the pioneers and their decendants: Where did the pioneer settlers of Providence come from? What skills and resources did they bring with them to "tame" the wilderness? Did they come as family units or as single men? What happened as the community grew and the resources were limited? Where did the settlers go or what did they do as the land became scarce? Was limited land the reason for the movement out of the community or were there other considerations? What effects did emigration have on the family ties of the second …

Pronouns Of Address In The Book Of Mormon, Lyle L. Fletcher Jan 1988

Pronouns Of Address In The Book Of Mormon, Lyle L. Fletcher

Theses and Dissertations

The first section of this thesis is a diachronic examination of second person pronouns in English with special focus on variations in usage such as pronominal shifting between thou (and related forms) and ye (and related forms), as well as an examination of the second person pronoun usage in the English Bible (especially the King James Version) with a similar focus. From the thirteenth century on variations in usage have been common.

The second section is a synchronic examination of second person pronouns as used by Joseph Smith and some of his contemporaries, followed by an analysis of these pronouns …

Thomas Bullock: A Man Doing His Duty, Jerald F. Simon Jan 1988

Thomas Bullock: A Man Doing His Duty, Jerald F. Simon

Theses and Dissertations

Thomas Bullock was intimately associated with leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for more than twenty-five years. He served twenty-one years in the Church Historian's office and also clerked in many city, county, and territorial positions, acting as scribe, clerk, and personal secretary to Joseph Smith Jr., Brigham Young, Willard Richards, and the Twelve Apostles. During this time he was privy to important events of late Nauvoo and early Utah Mormon history. His was a critical role in not only recording the history, but also in the gathering and preservation of historical documents. As a clerk …

Minerva Teichert's Murals: The Motivation For Her Large-Scale Production, Marian Eastwood Wardle Jan 1988

Minerva Teichert's Murals: The Motivation For Her Large-Scale Production, Marian Eastwood Wardle

Theses and Dissertations

It is my thesis that the impetus for Minerva Teichert's prolific mural production came from the lofty ideals of the Beaux Art mural tradition which she encountered and embraced during her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1909 to 1912. Furthermore, it was the great interest in mural decoration during the 1930s, spurred by government patronage, that provided Teichert with the opportunity to apply these ideals to large-scale works.
Research into the Beaux Art mural tradition has been difficult, as recent scholarship on the subject is negligible. An understanding of this early mural movement however, yields a greater …

Preparation And Practice Of Ministry : A Study Of Seventh-Day Adventist Ministerial Education In The Philippines, Crisolito Vasquez Dela Cruz

Dissertations

Background and purpose of the study. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which the present undergraduate ministerial degree offered at Philippine Union College is able to prepare the ministry adequately to meet the demands in the North Philippines. This study surveyed the opinions of administrators/departmental directors, pastors, religion and seminary faculty, and selected laymen.

Methodology. Societal background and statistics of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the Philippines were collected and organized from existing sources. Information concerning the graduates were obtained by aquestionnaire with two five-point scales. Data were analyzed and rankings were developed for levels …

Orthodoxy And Heresy In Hans Küng: An Analysis And Critique Of His Criteria And Norms Of Christian Truth And Error, C. Enrique Espinosa Jan 1988

Orthodoxy And Heresy In Hans Küng: An Analysis And Critique Of His Criteria And Norms Of Christian Truth And Error, C. Enrique Espinosa

Dissertations

This investigation deals with the concepts of orthodoxy and heresy in the thought of the Swiss theologian Hans Kung.

Chapter I sketches the broad outlines of the development of Christian orthodoxy and, by implication, of the heresy which opposed it, starting with the New Testament times. The most relevant elements constituting the structure of the orthodoxy-heresy antithesis are identified, described, and analyzed. The attention is thus focused on the traditional and modern principles, criteria, norms, and theological issues which have interplayed in the church's efforts to understand the Christian message correctly.

Chapter II shows that the pastoral concerns which constitute …

The Function Of Christ's Suffering In I Peter 2:21, Madelynn Jones-Haldeman Jan 1988

The Function Of Christ's Suffering In I Peter 2:21, Madelynn Jones-Haldeman

Dissertations

Problem. The phrase "because Christ also suffered for you" in 1 Peter 2:21b has been interpreted to suggest the vicarious death of Christ. The problem posed by this understanding results from the comparison made between Christ and the slaves who are invited to follow Christ's example. Therefore this study sought to determine the function of Christ's suffering in 1 Peter 2:21b and the nature of the example left to the slaves.

Method. The Greek grammar and literary style of the pericope were analyzed; documents that discussed the slave-master relationship in the first centuries B.C. and A.D. were studied; and books, …

The Problem Of Synoptic Relationships In The Development And Testing Of A Methodology For The Reconstruction Of The Matthean Community, Robert K. Mciver Jan 1988

The Problem Of Synoptic Relationships In The Development And Testing Of A Methodology For The Reconstruction Of The Matthean Community, Robert K. Mciver

Dissertations

Problem. The problem faced in this study was to discover a method of obtaining data concerning the Matthean community in a way that does not pre-suppose a solution to the problem of Synoptic relationships. To find such a methodology has become desirable because of the recent reopening of the question of Synoptic relationships.

Method. By comparing the Synoptic Gospels it is possible to detect patterns of differences between them. Particularly helpful is the material unique to the Gospel of Matthew. This is examined to discover the characteristic emphases of the Gospel. Further investigation showed that the sequences of events were …

A Study For Educational Administrators Concerning The Relationships Between Selected Dimensions Of Christian Education And Student Spirituality In Seventh-Day Adventist Day Academies In The United States Of America, Bruce R. Youlden Jan 1988

A Study For Educational Administrators Concerning The Relationships Between Selected Dimensions Of Christian Education And Student Spirituality In Seventh-Day Adventist Day Academies In The United States Of America, Bruce R. Youlden

Dissertations

Problem

Central to Christian education are the twin goals of leading students into a personal relationship with Christ and nurturing student spirituality. Yet, while the importance of these goals were generally recognized by Christian educators, the dimensions of Christian education which have greatest impact on adolescent spirituality were not identified. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to research (1) possible differences in the levels of student spirituality between Seventh-day Adventist day academies in the United States, (2) possible differences in the levels of spiritual nurture in selected dimensions of Christian education (3) possible relationships between the selected dimensions of …

Protection And Reward: The Significance Of Ancient Midrashic Expositions On Genesis 15:1-6, Aecio E. Cairus Jan 1988

Protection And Reward: The Significance Of Ancient Midrashic Expositions On Genesis 15:1-6, Aecio E. Cairus

Dissertations

Genesis 15:1-6, because of its content, provides singular opportunities for the study of ancient midrashic documents. This kind of study is being increasingly performed, and has interest from a theological, historical and--especially--exegetical viewpoint.

Chapter 1 attentively analyzes the treatment of the entire unit in midrashic documents (Jubilees, Genesis Apocryphon, Philo, Josephus, the Targumim, and Genesis Rabbah), identifies their individual theological and exegetical concerns, and shows their progression over time. The most ancient ones are found to emphasize the covenantal aspects of the passage, while later documents stress the eschatological reward of Abraham as a fruit of his good works.

Chapter …

The Training Of Lay Persons For Careproviding Ministries Among Hispanics, Eliezer Castanon Jan 1988

The Training Of Lay Persons For Careproviding Ministries Among Hispanics, Eliezer Castanon

Professional Dissertations DMin

This study attempted to develop a program that would provide Hispanic laypersons with skills and techniques for careproviding. Laypersons should be able to identify their gifts and particular ministries and use behavioral methods to minister to the members of the church and their respective community. Laypersons have been well-trained to do traditional evangelism, but no one has developed a program to train Hispanic laypersons in the careproviding ministry. Many pastors have multichurch districts, so their time to counsel and care for the flock is limited. In addition, pastors are not usually accessible. Laypersons, who live in the immediate area, once …

Strategy For Holy Week Incarnational Evangelism For The West Puerto Rico Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Efren Pagan Jan 1988

Strategy For Holy Week Incarnational Evangelism For The West Puerto Rico Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Efren Pagan

Professional Dissertations DMin

Problem

Most of the people living in Puerto Rico claim or are claimed to be Catholics by the Catholic leadership of the Island. Most of them have only a form of religion, having lost sight of the power of Christ's religion. They need to be led back to Christ, even though they are unconscious of their situation or of their spiritual need.

Method

Each person is unique, but some characteristics are similar to most of the people in a specific group. Catholics constitute a large group in Puerto Rico. To reach them, one must understand them and approach them in …

Warren Eugene Howell, Seventh-Day Adventist Educational Administrator, John Francis Waters

Dissertations

Problem. Warren Eugene Howell served the Seventh-day Adventist educational system as an administrator and teacher for thirty-four years. He pioneered in two important Adventist educational institutions and led the General Conference Education Department during a critical period in the history of Seventh-day Adventist education. Notwithstanding Howell's contribution to Adventist education, no comprehensive study of his administration has been attempted.

Method. In this study a historical-documentary method of research has been used. Correspondence collections; minutes of boards, committees, and faculty meetings; church periodicals; transcripts of lectures; and miscellaneous archival materials have provided primary source materials. These sources may be found …

The Effects Of Regional Accreditation On The Achievement Of Aims, Goals, And Mission Of Seventh-Day Adventist Academies In The United States As Perceived By Principals And Teachers, Garnet P. Spence

Dissertations

Problem. There has been an on-going debate as to whether SDA academies should seek regional accreditation. No studies were found on principals' and teachers' perceptions of the effects of regional accreditation on the aims, goals, and mission of Seventh-day Adventist academies in the United States. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the principals' and teachers' perceptions of the effect of regional accreditation on the aims, goals, and mission of Seventh-day Adventist academies in the United States.

Method. Items selected from the Evaluative Criteria checklist of the National Study of Secondary School Evaluation (1981) and from the Evaluative …

An Approach To A Holistic Ministry In A Seventh-Day Adventist Urban Church In Uganda, Nathaniel Mumbere Walemba Jan 1988

An Approach To A Holistic Ministry In A Seventh-Day Adventist Urban Church In Uganda, Nathaniel Mumbere Walemba

Professional Dissertations DMin

Problem. The SDA church in Uganda started in rural areas among rural people. But the situation has changed. Although the majority of the church membership nationwide is still rural, a large percentage is now urban in the real sense of the word. Moreover, it is estimated that by the year 2000, membership in city churches will have doubled. This urbanised membership requires an urbanized approach to ministry. Furthermore, as in any developing country, Ugandan urbanites have many needs which can be met only by a holistic approach to ministry. This study is undertaken to make a contribution toward achieving that …
