Sympathy For The Devil, Elizabeth Wickham Stephens
Sympathy For The Devil, Elizabeth Wickham Stephens
Theses & Honors Papers
When one first mentions John Milton's Paradise Lost, one is reminded of the fall of Adam and Eve. Yet for the reader who encounters this epic poem for the first time, a surprise is waiting. Milton centers his poem around Satan, the fallen leader of the band of angels who rebel from heaven. Through his verse, Milton explores the thoughts and motives of Satan, leaving the reader with an astonishing reaction: Satan is a pitiable character. From the war in heaven, to the regions of hell, to the Garden of Eden, Milton closely follows this downfallen character. He first emphasizes …

The Effects Of Performance Anxiety Management Training On Musicians’ Self-Efficacy, State Anxiety And Musical Performance Quality, Nancy Barnes Mansberger
The Effects Of Performance Anxiety Management Training On Musicians’ Self-Efficacy, State Anxiety And Musical Performance Quality, Nancy Barnes Mansberger
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Performance Anxiety Management Training (PAMT) on levels of perceived self-efficacy, state anxiety, and performance quality of undergraduate musicians performing under stressful conditions. Nineteen undergraduate music majors were selected for this study. Ten received PAMT, and nine received no treatment. Subjects were tested immediately prior to a stressful evaluative performance jury on self-assessed measures of self-efficacy and state anxiety. Adjudicating music faculty determined subjects' level of performance quality. Analysis of variance revealed that subjects in the PAMT group had significantly higher scores on measures of self-efficacy, and significantly lower scores …
The Role Of The Tobacco Trade In Turkish-American Relations, 1923-29., Robert Carey Goodman
The Role Of The Tobacco Trade In Turkish-American Relations, 1923-29., Robert Carey Goodman
Master's Theses
This study of the tobacco trade between Turkey and the United States provides new perspectives on two major themes in Turkish-American relations between 1923 and 1929: the effect of Turkish nationalism on American interests in Ataturk's Turkey, and the effort to restore Turkish- American diplomatic ties broken during World War I. The marked rise in American cigarette consumption after World War I made the tobacco trade a crucial link between Turkey and America because it required the importation of aromatic tobacco. During the Turkish Republic' s first decades, the value of American tobacco imports from Turkey exceeded the value of …
Gay Masquerade: Male Homosexuals In American Cities, 1910 To 1940, Steven L. Lewis
Gay Masquerade: Male Homosexuals In American Cities, 1910 To 1940, Steven L. Lewis
Masters Theses
Prior to 1900, American scientists struggled to formulate a sexual norm. Their categorization of sexuality ironically led to the creation of a label (homosexual) by which individuals created and expressed a sexual identity at variance with the newly created norm.
By 1910, the climate of moral reform (Progressivism) led to the discovery (and documentation) of a homosexual subculture in larger American cities. With Chicago and New York City as examples, the author documents the growth of this sexual underground in the period between 1910 and 1940. Using primary sources such as diaries, letters, autobiographies and novels, the world of the …

The Vietnam Escalation: Decision Making In The Johnson Administration, Arnoldo Tadeo Zarate
The Vietnam Escalation: Decision Making In The Johnson Administration, Arnoldo Tadeo Zarate
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Between November 1963 and July 1965, the Lyndon Johnson administration embarked on a policy that led to the Americanization of an internal struggle in Vietnam. The stage had been set in the events that followed World War II and the United States government's cold war decisions in the Truman and Eisenhower administrations. At the outset, France had refused to relinquish its colonial claims in Southeast Asia. Those early post-war governments changed the nature of the struggle in Indo-China from anti-colonialism to the American crusade against Communism.
The strict cold war policies of the Eisenhower administration and the subsequent blurring of …
Colonial American Freemasonry And Its Development To 1770, Arthur F. Hebbeler Iii
Colonial American Freemasonry And Its Development To 1770, Arthur F. Hebbeler Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the influence of Freemasonry as a social and cultural organization in the development of colonial America and the men who were active in the organization from its introduction to the colonies up to 1770. Since Freemasonry was the first fraternal organization established in the colonies, I wanted to see how, and if, it affected the attitudes and actions of its members during the pre-Revolutionary War years.
In preparing this thesis, I worked closely with lodges and Grand Lodges throughout the country. My research included physical inspection of a variety of Masonic documents …
A Considertation Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In The Context Of Public Policy Decision-Making, Kathleen M. Wong
A Considertation Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In The Context Of Public Policy Decision-Making, Kathleen M. Wong
Honors Theses
Just what is to be understood by the term "cost-benefit analysis" ("benefit-cost analysis")? The question itself arises from a curiosity into how government decisions (which affect all) are made. This paper gives an elementary discussion of constitutive parts, raising and responding to some initial criticisms. It seems fairly evident, unneedful of additional explanation or elaboration. The individual on the street would simply declare that it sounded like some rather ordinary decision-making process which involved the consideration of the costs and benefits incurred by the paths of action that might be selected. "Ordinary" means accessible to anyone and not the exclusive …
"We Are The Remnant": A Historical, Biblical, And Theological Analysis Of Seventh-Day Adventist Ecclesiological Self-Understanding, Stephan Paul Mitchell
"We Are The Remnant": A Historical, Biblical, And Theological Analysis Of Seventh-Day Adventist Ecclesiological Self-Understanding, Stephan Paul Mitchell
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis addresses the problem of Seventh-day Adventism's claim to comprise the final "remnant" church of Bible prophecy. The traditional emphasis within the church has been to lay exclusive claims upon the "remnant" of Revelation 12:17, God's last true church, on the basis that (a) Adventism exists in the "last days," (b) keeping the commandments of God" refers to their unique emphasis on the seventh-day Sabbath, (c) "having the testimony of Jesus" describes their possession of the gift of prophecy manifest in the life and work of Ellen G. White, and (d) God has given this church the task of …
The Ideology Of Rebellion: Philippe De Marnix, Sieur De Sainte Aldegonde, And The Dutch Revolt, Fred Edwin Beemon
The Ideology Of Rebellion: Philippe De Marnix, Sieur De Sainte Aldegonde, And The Dutch Revolt, Fred Edwin Beemon
Doctoral Dissertations
By situating the language of Philippe de Marnix in its cultural context, I identify his ideology or rebellion which for him justified the Dutch Revolt. Marnix's problem was to accommodate Calvinist freedom of conscience in a society which traditionally linked heresy and sedition. According to the accepted theory of correspondences, God created the universe, and thus earthly order corresponded to heavenly order. To disturb the peace and order of society was to do the work of the Devil and threaten total destruction--the apocalypse--strict conformity to secular and sacred authority, which were seen as united to preserve order was required.

The Effectiveness Of Fiction Versus Nonfiction In Teaching Reading To Esl Students, Becky Kay Appley
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years with the growing emphasis upon communicative activities in the classroom, controversy has risen as to which type of reading material is best for teaching reading in the ESL classroom, fiction or nonfiction.
A study was conducted with 31 students of which 15 were taught with non-fiction and 16 were taught with fiction. Both groups were taught the same reading skills. Each group was given three pre-tests and three post-tests in which improvement in overall language proficiency and reading comprehension in the areas of main idea, direct statements and inferences was measured. Reform And Democracy: British And American Reactions To The French Revolution, 1789-1801, Martha Lingua Wheless
History Theses & Dissertations
The outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789 had a profound effect on the countries of the western world. In Great Britain and America initial reaction to the Revolution was overwhelmingly positive, but as the events in France became increasingly violent opinions began to diverge. This thesis examines the diverse popular reactions to the French Revolution in both Great Britain and America. The role played by the governments of these nations in shaping public opinion is considered, as are the effects of the populaces' reactions on the government's policies, which culminated in the suppression of the parliamentary reform movement in …

"Wretched, Bloody, And Usurping Boar"? An Evaluation Of The Historicity Of Shakespeare's Richard Iii, Kathryn Kiff
"Wretched, Bloody, And Usurping Boar"? An Evaluation Of The Historicity Of Shakespeare's Richard Iii, Kathryn Kiff
Institute for the Humanities Theses
Shakespeare's portrait of Richard III as a diabolical monster was based on the hostile accounts fashioned about him during the Tudor regime. Sir Thomas More's Richard III established the definitive image of Richard as the deformed tyrant who usurped the throne and murdered his nephews. This was the portrait that Shakespeare inherited from the sixteenth-century writers who incorporated More's account into their chronicles. This thesis examines Shakespeare's portrayal of Richard and the chronicle sources upon which he drew in order to show how Shakespeare's portrait of Richard developed. Although Richard was not the evil character presented in Shakespeare's play, it …

Divine Judgment In The Book Of Revelation, James E. Shipp
Divine Judgment In The Book Of Revelation, James E. Shipp
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Judgment themes in the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament are described and classified. Special attention is given to recurring themes of remedial judgment and annihilation. John's Revelation is analyzed for consistency of judgment themes, and John's theology of judgment is compared and contrasted with other scriptural sources. It is concluded that John described God as the. active judge in human history. John's theology of judgment includes remedial judgment where physical or natural calamities are intended to lead people to repentance, and final judgment where lost souls are annihilated. John's Revelation is seen to be devoid of forensic or courtroom …

Community, Violence, And The Nature Of Change: Whitecapping In Sevier County, Tennessee, During The 1890'S, William Joseph Cummings
Masters Theses
During the 1890s, a series of extra-legal and illegal activities known as "whitecapping" occurred in Sevier County, Tennessee. While the early episodes were based on traditional responses to deviant behavior in rural communities, whitecapping reflected the loss of community within the county. This study examines the relationship of whitecapping and community in Sevier County and how it changed during the 1890s. The several, often contradictory, social conditions which affected the life of every Sevier Countian are also examined to show the decline of community consensus during this period. Finally, the events galavanizing public opinion against the whitecaps are analyzed to …

The Effects Of Oral Conferencing And Written Comments On The Writing And Revisions Of Esl Students, Ann Louise Kirk
The Effects Of Oral Conferencing And Written Comments On The Writing And Revisions Of Esl Students, Ann Louise Kirk
Dissertations and Theses
This study looked at the effect of written and oral comments on students' writing. The research hypotheses were that the use of oral comments would improve the overall quality of the students papers, increase the length more, and cause more changes in content than the use of written comments. On the other hand, the use of written comments would cause a greater decrease in grammatical errors in the students' papers than oral comments. The tests used to evaluate these hypotheses were the holistic writing scale used by the Test of Written English (TWE), a word count, a content percentage scale …

Seven types of errors are identified under interlingual category: articles, prepositions, the copula, embedded questions, pronoun retention, semantic …
Irish-American Fiction And The Ethnic Identity Of Irish-Americans, Mary Carty
Irish-American Fiction And The Ethnic Identity Of Irish-Americans, Mary Carty
Honors Theses
As the largest immigrant group in the history of the United States, the Irish have had a tremendous impact on American society. Politically, the Irish flooded city government offices, eventually working up to the nation's highest office. Economically, they swelled the ranks of the labor market that was so crucial to America's growing industry. Religiously, they took over the leadership and strengthened the establishment of the Roman Catholic church in America, bringing to it their own parochial brand of Irish Catholicism. The Irish also influenced American culture with their successes in literature and the arts, and with their widespread emphasis …

The Role And Place Of Women In The Evangelical Lutheran Church In Tanzania--Mbulu Synod In The Light Of The New Testament, Daniel Daudi
The Role And Place Of Women In The Evangelical Lutheran Church In Tanzania--Mbulu Synod In The Light Of The New Testament, Daniel Daudi
Master of Art Theology Thesis
As noted at the outset, the main purpose of this research is to relieve the confusion in the ELCT—Mbulu Synod about the role and place of women. However, in order to give a broad overview of the place of, it is important that materials on women be presented both in their positive and negative details, because the ELCT Mbulu Synod has emphasized negative examples and passages from the Bible concerning women rather than positive examples which do exist. It is accepted that the Bible is the written Word of God worthy of the closest attention and which demands our obedience. …

Lutheranism In Maine 1741-1986, Ingo Dutzmann
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
My purpose in this writing is very simple. First, to tell the story for the first time. Second, to establish and comment upon basic demographic data for Lutheranism in Maine and to provide brief overviews of every Lutheran congregation in Maine to date. And third, to make some observations about the practical and theological state of the Lutheran denominations in Maine especially with reference to the establishment of the new Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, as it may relate to the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

A Study Of German Lutheran Communion Hymnody The Early Years, Paul Becker
A Study Of German Lutheran Communion Hymnody The Early Years, Paul Becker
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The goal of this thesis is to demonstrate that in the early years of Lutheranism, what the faithful sang and confessed about the Sacrament of the Altar is dangerously close to being forgotten by American Lutherans in the latter half of the twentieth century. What Christians sing about as they are given the body and blood of their risen Lord reveals both their confessional stance and their piety. By digging into the treasure-store of German Lutheran Communion hymnody, the theology of the Sacrament as confessed in the early years of Lutheranism will be brought to light and offered to the …
