Consider the way we American lawyers learn about the relationship between the church and the law: This grand constitutional and legal order we propose to serve is unfolded before us and built up in our minds and hearts; it comes to us out of multi-volume sets of course books, and, like the gods of Canaan, it comes to us as religious: Thomas Jefferson said America was God's New Israel; David Hoffman, the grandfather of legal ethics in America, spoke of the law as a temple and of us lawyers as priests who served in the temple; Law Day speakers commonly …

A Midrash On Water, Joseph A. Edelheit
A Midrash On Water, Joseph A. Edelheit
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
Jews and Christians share a common foundation of Scripture. It is within this common, sacred text that we shall find the source of "Grace upon Grace: Living Water." It requires little religious imagination to link the use of water as a purification rite in the Biblical world to the use of the mikveh in the early rabbinic period, and ultimately to the transformative ritual of Baptism as an essential sacramental rite in Christianity. My task this evening is not to trace that course of ritual development, but rather to consider the many and varied texts of Scripture from within …

African Americans And The Bible, Vincent L. Wimbush

Rationale for a History of "Readings": The history of the engagement of the Bible among African Americans is dramatic and complex and has important implications for biblical interpretation. It provides the student of the Bible not only a conceptual window onto a dramatic and complex history of self-definitions and worldviews among those in the modern world who now call themselves African Americans, but also the opportunity to rethink the basic hermeneutical assumptions about biblical interpretation, especially its focus upon the ancient text and/or ancient historical situation as the starting and end point of interpretation. The critical juxtaposition of the Bible …

Women-Church And Egalitarianism: Revisioning "In Christ There Are No More Distinctions Between Male And Female", Susan A. Farrell
Publications and Research
This chapter from The Power of Gender in Religion (eds G.A. Weatherby and S.A. Farrell) illustrates how women in the Roman Catholic Church are expanding the roles of women and challenging the patriarchal and hierarchical Roman Catholic Church practices. They are accomplishing this through an umbrella organization of feminist groups which maintain their catholic identty while critiquing the church from within.
The Relationship Of Wisdom To Transformational Leadership: Illustrated By The Historical Jesus, Marykate Morse
The Relationship Of Wisdom To Transformational Leadership: Illustrated By The Historical Jesus, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
The shifting context of Western social structures and global inter-relatedness demands leaders who can effectively navigate systems through chaos. This study hypothesized that wisdom is the construct that enables leaders to "see" and thus interpret a beneficial path of action. The purpose of the study was to explore how psychological wisdom theory relates to transformational leadership.
The historical Jesus served as the model for this relationship. Using Biblical historical criticism, an analysis was done of Jesus' wisdom in the Jewish wisdom tradition. Jesus' wisdom was then compared to the features of psychological wisdom. Both deal with contradictions and change, exhibit …
Tapping The Wisdom Of The Ancestors: An Attempt To Recast Vodou And Morality Through The Voice Of Mama Lola And Karen Mccarthy Brown, Claudine Michel
Tapping The Wisdom Of The Ancestors: An Attempt To Recast Vodou And Morality Through The Voice Of Mama Lola And Karen Mccarthy Brown, Claudine Michel
William Monroe Trotter Institute Publications
The focus of this Research Report is on morality as a culture-specific and contextual phenomenon. It argues that Vodou, as a religion, has largely been misrepresented in the West and has been portrayed as having no legitimate basis for morality mainly because of its African origins. This paper attempts to interpret morality in Vodou by presenting a model of ethics construction grounded in the history of the people and based on the true meaning of the religion. It argues that Haitians have turned to their ancestral religion and to their African past to survive isolation and ostracism from the West …

Reassessing Canonical Attitudes Towards African Marriage Practices Based On A Study Of The African Synod, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator
Reassessing Canonical Attitudes Towards African Marriage Practices Based On A Study Of The African Synod, Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
African theologians are virtually unanimous in pointing out that the experience and institution of marriage constitute a special test case for the process of inculturation in the Church in Africa. This article studies the problem as it was dealt with by the African Synod, that is, from the perspective of the Code of Canon Law in relation to extremely important issues such as grounds for nullity, consummation of marriage and marital consent. In the author's opinion the Synod opens the way for further discussion and examination of the issues involved rather than provide practical solutions. The pastoral problem of compatibility …

The Book Of Numbers At Qumran: Texts And Context, Dana M. Pike

In this paper I examine the significance of the book of Numbers for the covenant community at Qumran. By way of background, I will relate the reason I chose this topic. My assignment as an editor of fragments for DJD is to prepare about sixty plates of miscellaneous and mainly unidentified fragments from Cave 4 at Qumran for publication. While some of these fragments have been identified and have been or will be published by others, I have well over 1,000 fragments with which to work. Most are quite small. Andrew Skinner, a colleague of mine at Brigham Young University, …
On The Cross-Cultural Attitudes And Experiences Of Recently Returned Lds Missionaries, Timothy B. Smith, Richard N. Roberts, Burton Kerr
On The Cross-Cultural Attitudes And Experiences Of Recently Returned Lds Missionaries, Timothy B. Smith, Richard N. Roberts, Burton Kerr
Faculty Publications
To examine the effect of the mission experience upon attitudes towards members of different cultures, 273 recently returned LDS missionaries and 493 LDS college students who had not yet served missions were administered measures of racial attitudes. Subsequently, the highest and lowest fifth of missionaries who had served in non-English speaking nations were interviewed. Results indicated that the missionaries did differ from the non-missionary sample in their racial attitudes and that several key qualitative pre-mission and mission experiences distinguished between the two groups interviewed. Prejudice, with its attendant train of evil, is giving way before the force of truth, whose …
