Enhancing Information Literacy Using Bernard Lonergan's Generalized Empirical Method: A Three-Year Case Study In A First Year Biology Course., Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Marian Glenn, Doreen Stiskal

Praxis Publications

This paper describes a three-year long collaborative project between a science librarian, a biology professor and a physical therapy professor to improve information literacy in an undergraduate biology laboratory course. The authors used Bernard J. Lonergan’s Generalized Empirical Method (GEM) as a cognitional framework, emphasizing the role of experience, understanding, judgement and action in conducting research. They focused on the selection, integration and citation of scholarly articles in formal laboratory reports. The science librarian became embedded in the course, delivering information literacy instruction sessions, grading and providing feedback on the use of information sources in the lab reports. Overall the …

Bernard Lonergan’S Functional Specialties And Academic Libraries, Lisa Madeleine Rose-Wiles Jul 2017

Bernard Lonergan’S Functional Specialties And Academic Libraries, Lisa Madeleine Rose-Wiles

Library Publications

I apply the framework of Bernard Lonergan’s functional specialties to academic libraries. This process helped to identify and situate the challenges that libraries face today. These largely stem from historical changes that align with the three challenges to higher education that Lonergan identified in Topics in Education nearly 60 years ago: “the masses”, “the new learning”, and “increasing specialization”. Despite lofty Mission Statements and Strategic Plans (policy making and planning), the foundations of today’s academic libraries are unclear, largely because dialectics surrounding those historical changes have not been resolved. This has led to considerable concern about the future of academic …

The Covenant Of Deuteronomy And The Study Of The Ancient Israelite Jurisprudence, Kenneth C. Anyanwu May 2017

The Covenant Of Deuteronomy And The Study Of The Ancient Israelite Jurisprudence, Kenneth C. Anyanwu

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

“Happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. Happy are those who keep his decrees, who seek him with their whole heart, who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways. (Psalm 119: 1 – 3)

All through the ages, law and justice has been a condition for a smooth, egalitarian and peaceful society. A society devoid of law and justice is not only unthinkable but a bedlam of chaos, anarchy and disorder. No wonder the ancient Greek philosopher and sage, Aristotle said, “At his best, man is the noblest of all animals; …

The "Lamb Of God" Title In John's Gospel: Background, Exegesis, And Major Themes, Christiane Shaker Dec 2016

The "Lamb Of God" Title In John's Gospel: Background, Exegesis, And Major Themes, Christiane Shaker

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

This study focuses on the testimony of John the Baptist—“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” [ἴδε ὁ ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ ὁ αἴρων τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τοῦ κόσμου] (John 1:29, 36)—and its impact on the narrative of the Fourth Gospel. The goal is to provide a deeper understanding of this rich image and its influence on the Gospel. In an attempt to do so, three areas of concentration are explored. First, the most common and accepted views of the background of the “Lamb of God” title in first century Judaism and Christianity are reviewed. …

Which Side Are You On? : Prosthetic Vaginas, Cross-Dressing Madonnas, And Queer Theology In Virgin Of The Flames And Narcopolis, Nasreen Hannah Khan May 2016

Which Side Are You On? : Prosthetic Vaginas, Cross-Dressing Madonnas, And Queer Theology In Virgin Of The Flames And Narcopolis, Nasreen Hannah Khan

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Chris Abani describes a scene where his main character Black and Sweet Girl, a transsexual dancer, have intercourse for the first time. Black hesitates as he begins to penetrate her anally because, “he couldn’t become her this way. He knew this thing, this intimacy he craved wasn’t about love, or even sex, but about filling himself.” (275). Black does not want sex, he wants, as Sweet Girl does, to transcend boundaries of gender and the physical dimensions of sex. Similarly Thayil’s narrator Dimple, a castrated biological male prostitute living as a woman, expounds on the nature of sex after a …

The Day Of Judaism In The Catholic Church Of Poland, Piotr Dudek May 2015

The Day Of Judaism In The Catholic Church Of Poland, Piotr Dudek

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This master’s thesis discusses “The Day of Judaism in the Catholic Church of Poland,” a special time in the Polish Church calendar to rediscover her roots in Judaism. Thus, the aim of this study is to present the changes taking place in the Catholic Church in Poland in the wake of the Second Vatican Council—changes that seek to present Judaism in an impartial and authentic way, and changes that seek to understand the Christian identity of Catholics.

The scope of the current work covers the history of Polish-Jewish relations from Communist Poland to the present day (2015), in parallel with …
