Nonviolent Action: What Christian Ethics Demands But Most Christians Have Never Really Tried (Review), Richard Crane
Nonviolent Action: What Christian Ethics Demands But Most Christians Have Never Really Tried (Review), Richard Crane
Biblical, Religious, & Philosophical Studies Educator Scholarship
In this book, Ron Sider breaks no new scholarly ground. But that was not his purpose. Sider’s purpose is to motivate his intended audience—Christian leaders of churches, denominations, parachurch bodies, and other ecclesial groups—to make a bold and sustained commitment to nonviolent activism on a grand scale.
Method, Macintyre, And Pedagogy: Inviting Students To Participate In Theology As A Living Conversation, Richard Crane
Method, Macintyre, And Pedagogy: Inviting Students To Participate In Theology As A Living Conversation, Richard Crane
Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship
Teaching theology within academic institutions with confessional commitments and theologically conservative students requires holding together, in creative tension, two pedagogical goals. The challenge is to promote rigorous academic inquiry by encouraging student openness to engagement with perspectives that challenge their own beliefs while simultaneously constructing a course that is experienced as a safe space where students do not feel their personal faith is under attack. This essay presents the argument that a methodological framework for introductory theology courses informed by Alasdair MacIntyre's reflections on the nature of living traditions holds great promise for achieving these objectives. The essay will also …

A Distinctive Vision For The Liberal Arts: General Education And The Flourishing Of Christian Higher Education, Cynthia Wells
Higher Education Faculty Scholarship
This article argues that a coherent and inspired general education program, infused with a deliberate vision of the liberal arts, is crucial to the flourishing of Christian higher education. This article begins by describing the context and status of general education, emphasizing how this element of the educational program falls short in embodying a distinctive mission of Christian higher education. This article then contends that a vibrant vision of general education will be grounded in particular aspects of a liberal arts education that fulfill crucial outcomes of the Christian university, specifically cultivating the formal virtues and fostering meaning and purpose. …
A Christian Perspective Of An Ojibwe Sweat For Women, Carol Z.A. Mcginnis, Julie Ogemaanungokwe Smith
A Christian Perspective Of An Ojibwe Sweat For Women, Carol Z.A. Mcginnis, Julie Ogemaanungokwe Smith
Counseling Educator Scholarship
It is a rare privilege to be invited to participate in a Native American Ojibwe sweat and I was fortunate to experience this as an all-female event with other counselors from across the US. As a pastoral counselor who comes from a Methodist Christian worldview, I thought it may be helpful to share my perspective with other counselors who may work with Native American clients who engage in this type of religious experience. Oftentimes we have difficulty in finding “common ground” from which to connect with clients from different cultures, and this experience helped me to see how our shared …

Not Going Gentle Into That Good Night: Science And Religion In The Face Of Death, Larry Poston, Pamela Code
Not Going Gentle Into That Good Night: Science And Religion In The Face Of Death, Larry Poston, Pamela Code
Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship
For millennia, religions have provided rituals bringing comfort in the face of death. Modern science, however, is developing new means for dealing with this phenomenon. Controversial issues include: how to ascertain “death,” particularly in light of “premature burials”; religious questions regarding the morality of embalming; religious questions regarding the desirability of burial versus cremation; and extending life in attempts to achieve immortality—versus the contention that mortality is the result of human sinfulness. This article explores these issues and seeks to answer the question of whether science has contributed positively or negatively to the experience of dying.

Effective Interreligious Dialogue, Caleb Fugate
Effective Interreligious Dialogue, Caleb Fugate
Communication Student Scholarship
As the world is becoming more and more globally connected, it is becoming increasingly important for religious people to be able to dialogue effectively with the religious other. What is the most effective way to have interreligious dialogue? Should this dialogue focused on conversion of the religious other to a particular religious view or is dialogue focused on solely building relationships to mutual grow in their knowledge of the divine and its relationship to the world. This question of what is most effective is what will be addressed in this essay by analyzing how invitational rhetoric may be a good …

When God Smites: Talking With Students About The Violence Of God In Scripture, Eric A. Seibert
When God Smites: Talking With Students About The Violence Of God In Scripture, Eric A. Seibert
Bible & Religion Educator Scholarship
This article emphasizes the need for religious educators to address the issue of divine violence in Scripture with students, and it offers various pedagogical strategies for doing so. The focus is on violent Old Testament texts, with special attention given to the issue of Canaanite genocide. A general framework for structuring class time around divine violence in Scripture is proposed which includes (1) encouraging students to encounter violent biblical texts firsthand, (2) helping them understand why people find these passages problematic, and (3) offering various options for dealing with the potential problems these passages raise. In the second half of …

Response: Spreading The “Tone At The Top” Throughout The Organization, Jennifer Dose
Response: Spreading The “Tone At The Top” Throughout The Organization, Jennifer Dose
Business Educator Scholarship
Many thanks to Dov Fischer and Hershey Friedman, the authors of “Psalms: Lessons for a ‘Tone at the Top’ Based on Trust and Justice,” for a very interesting and timely article. I am pleased that my own article, “Proverbs: Ancient Wisdom for Contemporary Organizations” (Dose, 2012), published in the JBIB, sparked the ideas presented in “Tone at the Top.” My goal in the Proverbs paper was to conduct an inductive study of Proverbs to find themes related to business. The assumption was that organizational members, particularly leaders, who follow the set of principles that Proverbs advocates, bring about beneficial organizational …
