Racially Polarized Voting And Its Effects On The Formation Of A Viable Latino-Asian Pacific Political Coalition, James Lai Jan 1998

Racially Polarized Voting And Its Effects On The Formation Of A Viable Latino-Asian Pacific Political Coalition, James Lai

Ethnic Studies

In "Paths To Political Incorporation For Latinos and Asian Pacifies in California," Steven P. Erie, Harold Brackman, and James Warren Ingram Ill (Erie et al.) examined the potentials and barriers for political incorporation of Latinos, African Americans, and Asian Pacifies in California. According to their findings, they argue that a bi-racial political coalition between Latinos and Asian Pacifies is likely based on the following factors: language and immigration issues. They stated:

Regarding a possible Latino alliance with Asian Pacifies, there appears to be a strong basis for collaboration on behalf of an immigrant rights agenda and in opposition to resurgent …

Southern Strategies, James R. Sweeney Jan 1998

Southern Strategies, James R. Sweeney

History Faculty Publications

From the mid-1960's, Virginia Republicans, in tune with President Richard Nixon's active "Southern strategy," revived party fortunes in the state by capitalizing on the ongoing degeneration of Virginia Senator Harry F. Byrd, Sr.'s powerful conservative Democratic organization and the factionalization of the state Democratic Party. Republican Abner Linwood Holton, Jr., solidly carried the 1969 gubernatorial election. In the 1970 senatorial election Independent Harry Flood Byrd, Jr., defeated Republican Ray Lucian Garland and Democrat George Rawlings. Senator Byrd, Jr., had enjoyed Nixon's "benevolent neutrality," but never did join the Republican Party as the president had hoped; in office he voted with …

Mexico: The Case For Creation Of A National Court Of Human Rights, Nauhcatzin T. Bravo-Aguilar

LLM Theses and Essays

The continuing oppression and violation of human rights in Mexico is predicated on the abuse of executive power, suppression of the powers of the Comision Nacional de Derechos Humanos (the National Commission for the Protection of Human Rights), and the usurpation of the authority of the judiciary. This thesis conducts a comparative analysis of the protection of human rights under the Constitution of the United States, the German Basic Law, and the Constitution of Mexico. It analyses the concept of the judicial review of executive and legislative powers and advocates for the establishment of a National Court of Human Rights …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

There is no escaping the mentality--or the burden--of e pluribus unum, writes EDWARD M. GRIFFIN, whether there is a oneness or a plural character to being an American or another notion entirely of what kind of people our multicultural backgrounds have fashioned. Whether national policy or educational philosophy, this concept, these concepts, must be confronted. Professor of English at the University of Minnesota, Griffin has written widely on such colonial figures as Jonathan Edwards and Charles Chauncy, and he has recently turned his attention to the American poet/playwrights Robert Lowell and William Alfred.

JESSICA B. TEISCH examines the story …

The Future Relationships Between Mainland China And Taiwan, Tian Li Jan 1998

The Future Relationships Between Mainland China And Taiwan, Tian Li

Masters Theses

This thesis is a study of the possible future developments of the Taiwan issue and the relationships between Mainland China and the island of Taiwan. After examining all the alternative scenarios, the author predicts that in the foreseeable future political and economic cooperation between Mainland China and the island of Taiwan will gradually increase, with avoidance of military confrontation, but complete reunification between Taiwan will not occur, nor will Taiwan become a legal state.

The author will examine evidence, including both domestic factors in the two parts of China and external factors, which may either reinforce the above prediction or …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

JOHN CHURCHILL argues that only by providing "exemplars—cases of fit and base behavior in history, fiction, and other fields, narratives of situations and problem-confrontation in which the possible challenges of human life are exhibited and some possible resolutions held up for consideration," can those who would learn deliberate upon and apply abstract principles, and that this is the essence of a liberal education. Along the way Churchill confronts the issue of what is meant by rational argumentation. Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dean of the College, at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, Churchill sums up his many publications, including two …

Corruption And Governance In The South Pacific, Peter Larmour

Pacific Studies

Defining corruption as “the use of public office for private gain,” this article considers some recent reports of corruption in relation to other issues in South Pacific politics: tradition, ethnicity, aid, land tenure, sovereignty, and governance.
