To look, through poetry, at the men my culture has produced. Formal decisions are unique to each poem which are arranged sonnets, couplets, quatrains, among other forms and free verse forms. Toxic masculinity is examined, as well as the people enabled, participating in, and victimized by that culture.

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
From a brief history of poetry, to words of scattered yet sympathetic thoughts my obsession with poetry will be unleashed. My thoughts and different approaches with this project will take on a few different short intoxicating narratives and excursions. Different sections of my project are simple yet complex indirect reflections of verbal asymmetrical shapes, and visual connections. Ultimately, you will be able to experience the visual connections through the photos that I took and my poetic approach. I hope this project is found to be seen as an exhilarating experience as I share my personal self, my thoughts on creativity, …

The following is an essay on the craft of poetry. It talks about influences for poetry writing including other poets, history, music, and the poet’s personal life, as well as the process of writing poetry throughout the poet’s life. The work focuses on how her poetry has developed and what she is trying to accomplish with her poetry in regards to women, power, and desire. The poems are usually persona poems written from the perspectives of medieval women (either real or imagined) and a few of her own personal poems. A sample of some of the poems are included here. …

Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The following collection deals largely with autobiographical work. Created primarily between 2007-2018, the following poems reflect the life experiences and reflections of a poet throughout his thirties. Largely tied to regionalism of the Ozarks, many poems in this collection highlight specific locales throughout southwest Missouri and/or northern Arkansas, and explore, thematically, feelings of loneliness, isolation, the struggle of faith, and the impact of displacement, both physical and metaphysical. Further, many of the poems feature a through-line, thematically, involving the bonds of family and the impact of death on relationships and the human psyche. Lastly, an appreciation for, and connection with, …

Graduate Theses/Dissertations
This thesis is a collection of poems. Much of my poetry is influenced by ideas of identity, particularly religious and sexual identity, and the ways identity affects relationships. As someone raised in a Catholic church from birth, religion has had a major impact on my life and perspective. I am no longer practicing but still consistently find myself considering the morals of the Church in my actions in a positive way. Catholicism will also always affect my relationship with my mother, who is still practicing. Much of my current poetry concerns my relationship with my mother, especially regarding religion and …

The massively multiplayer online role playing game, World of Warcraft follows many leveling systems that spoon-feeds its players a steady and carefully calculated sense of progression, control, and power. This is part of what makes the game so appealing, as well as the intricate character creation and vast community-based elements. Millions of players share this world of Warcraft, as if it were its own real world (and in a way it is), and they do so with characters they’ve created and customized. What furthers this connection between player and character, and player and player, is how their characters move and …

Creative Writing Programs
What We Say: Exploring Well-Versed Messaging in the Music, Literary and Cloth Traditions of Black Americana—serves as an exhibition of coded cypher without disclosing the inherent secret to deciphering the code. It is the script for the enigma, sans the full disclosure of meaning. It is the novel, without the cliff notes; the song without the mind-blowing lilt; the telling of the secret, without the whisper. I am giving you the truth, out loud, to provide relief through kinship connection to long-time sufferers who wandered for a long time wondering “what is wrong with me?” and seldom got an …

All NMU Master's Theses
"wait for it to bloom." is a poetry collection of free verse poetry that examines black motherhood and womanhood in order to interrogate the sociopolitical implications of black women’s existence in a patriarchal, capitalistic society. Due to the intersections of our identities, black women face a specific type of discrimination that spans both racism and sexism, among other types of discrimination. The healing properties associated with astronomy and mythology are used as entry points to discuss this trauma, while popular culture is used to address these issues that happen daily in the media directly. This consistent bombardment of prejudice, along …

All NMU Master's Theses
This thesis is a collection of poems that center on the themes of extinction, family, the female body, and the presence of the animal. During my time in the Upper Peninsula, I found a connection with the natural world around me, and this led to my fascination with animals and extinction, both of which manifested in my poetry. As I struggled with the residual effects of toxic relationships, as well as the bleak romantic landscape of the UP, I saw my own body reflected in the bodies of animals. I specifically noticed this reflection while studying the art of taxidermy; …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Shimmer is a collection of poems that explores the unfixed nature of self-construction through the complications of intersectionality. Throughout the text, the speaker, possessing multiple positions that share the locus of the singular unified body, navigates existing power structures in various publics in which bodies and cultures are read and deemed legible or illegible to situated hegemonic social structures. Through confessional and lyric strategies, the speaker reflects on the rituals that reify culturally informed social contracts within diverse publics.
