Francis Thompson And His Affinities With The Metaphysical Poets., Catherine Lucile Sanford

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to show that Francis Thompson, the nineteenth century poet, has marked affinities with the Metaphysical poets, of the seventeenth century. The term Metaphysical has been applied by Dr. Samuel Johnson to the poetry of writers such as Donne, Herbert, Crashaw, Vaughan and Cowley. Possibly, the reason for the name may be attributed to the fact that they were thought to have been so much above the earth, for indeed they searched heaven and earth for their analogies and imagery.
