A friend of mine once said to me "I cannot have a friend who has not suffered." I agree with her, for suffering constitutes, I believe, the benchmarks of initiation into personhood. The poems in Benchmarks describe one middle-aged woman's experience of initiation, her sometimes painful journey from innocence to experience.

There was no premeditation, no awareness ahead of time that any one theme would pervade these poems, but a theme does emerge when the poems are looked at as a group. This woman describes vignettes, real and imaginary, as she unfolds as a human being. She starts with her …

Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

Time Theory In The Short Fiction Of Jorge Luis Borges: The Language Of "Reality", Lyn Lamkin

Time boundaries delimit mankind's concerns while subtly affecting the perspective men have on all ontological questions. However, Jorge Luis Borges' short fiction develops an a-temporal perspective that denies the distinctions of a past, present, and future, obscuring traditional human conceptions of time and reality. He repetitively uses cycles and labyrinths as spatial metaphors for time to emphasize man's Inability to escape the maze of existence and to define a final reality that he can order. Borges' fiction suggests that only by trying to understand what exists beyond our universe in an unknowable. Infinite time continuum can human reality be ordered …

In T. S. Eliot's The Idea of a Christian Society, the poet questions the nature of our society's foundations; he believes that Western culture is moving dangerously closer to the liberal and secular and that this shift could be disastrous. Instead, Eliot suggests that we return to what is at the very roots of Western tradition: Christianity. To facilitate this change in direction, Eliot stresses the importance of an educational system which takes a Christian perspective. The poems in this thesis deal primarily with finding a safe and perhaps even joyful place in this precarious and saddening world. If they have a theoretical foundation, it is in my fervent and idealistic desire that they be read aloud by ordinary people with the recognition that poetry can be entertainment; ordinary people and the details of our lives are my subjects, and my language is rarely other than formalized ordinary language. In these aspects, then, my work seems to lean toward both realism and romanticism.

Whether the things we love are truly things or people or places, we love them because they are a part of us. As a writer, I remember special moments, carry special memories, and when writing poems, try to recall and put into words of special meaning these recollections. I try to recreate that time, that place, that person and look for the best words I can find, then put them in their best order to make my poetry. My early years in the country, among country things and people, have given me a real feel for earthy simple things.
