Bleek: A Dramatic Poem, Gwendolyn Gail Nixon
Bleek: A Dramatic Poem, Gwendolyn Gail Nixon
English Theses & Dissertations
This poem is not about any character in particular. It is a montage of disenfranchised voices which reflect disenchantment with the status quo: a system that continues to see gang members as crazed people who are non-human, a stereotype which perpetuates gang-related killings.
Nevertheless, the poem has some of the qualities of a short story in that it has a beginning, middle, and end, as well as a central character, Bleek, who speaks for the norms of the poem. Through a series of scenes and reflections, Bleek takes us on a journey which is as demoralizing as the one that …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
Understanding God and that which is not divine has provoked philosophical extremes from the time of the Greeks to the present day. Philosopher CHARLES HARTSHORNE proposes a mathematical schema to sort out their differences and to establish a common ground for discussing deity and humanity. Author of twenty books and more than four hundred scholarly essays, Hartshorne, before his retirement, taught in ten universities, five in the United States and five abroad (Germany, Belgium, Australia, Japan, and India).
Bridging the gulf between the humanities and the sciences by relating the history and practice of art to the geometry of Euclid …

The Promethean
After just finishing this issue of The Promethean, the same nagging feeling reduces me to simple frustration: I know that there are potential witers out there who have thought about contributing but have not. It is not only that I value each piece submitted, but it is because I know that people are moved by and enjoy reading the works of others.
For instance, I'm willing to believe that Amy Westlund's "Homecoming" will stir the thoughts of those who have been lucky enough to travel and rouse a sense of curiousity in those who have not. Hidden meanings and not …

Katharine's Dream, Karen Maceira
Katharine's Dream, Karen Maceira
English Theses & Dissertations
Katharine's Dream is about a girl born into a family of great passion and great fear. Not all members of the family survive this devastating combination. These poems tell of who survived and how, and of who did not.
The poems are predominantly free verse lyrics which use standard diction and syntax. More often than not, they employ a short line, dense imagery and "white space," which frames the images and ideas, in the words of Mary Oliver, with the necessary "silence." Though the rhythms of some of the poems flow among smoothly, line breaks in others often suggest the …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought
How should literary critics accomplish their necessary judgments? Robert Penn Warren, though marginalized by some historians of literary criticism in the twentieth century, has, in D. G. MYERS's opinion, an important contribution to our understanding of the discipline. Professor of English at Texas A & M University, Myers has published articles on the history and theory of criticism in a number of journals and is completing a book on the history of creative writing in American literary education.
TERRY WHITE explores the writings of three contemporary authors on the nature of the choices humans face when confronted with evil. Assistant …
