Plato's Divided Line And A Mythical Mode Of Knowledge, Dorothy Hageman
Plato's Divided Line And A Mythical Mode Of Knowledge, Dorothy Hageman
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
My thesis is a discussion of Plato's divided line with a special concentration on the fourth level of knowledge. First, the discussion centers on gaining an understanding of the divided line and what Plato says about the method of attaining fourth level knowledge. Second, I show the four levels of the line in two of Plato's dialogues, the Republic and the Phaedrus. The first three levels match the description of them that Plato gives in the divided line, but instead of finding what Plato describes for the fourth level we find a myth. Finally, I discuss how the myth takes …
Fractured Certainties: Epistemology And Ontology In David Malouf's Child's Play, The Great World And Remembering Babylon, Chris Lyon
Theses : Honours
This thesis is an exploration of the way in which David Malouf develops ideas of epistemology and ontology in three of his novels. The novels discussed are Child's Play (1982), The Great World (1990) and Remembering Babylon (1993). Of particular concern here are the different ways in which figures in the text are constructed as having imperfect and sometimes contradictory systems of making sense of their world.

Lawyer Liability In Third Party Situations: The Meaning Of The Kaye Scholar Case, Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr.
Lawyer Liability In Third Party Situations: The Meaning Of The Kaye Scholar Case, Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr.
All Faculty Scholarship
The Kaye Scholer I case has excited much attention and alarm within the legal profession. 2 It is interpreted as greatly expanding the scope of lawyer liability to third parties and heralding much greater regulatory intervention into the relationship between lawyer and client. In some respects this interpretation is accurate. The Kaye Scholer proceeding is at least a "wake up call" to the legal profession, signalling that lawyers should be much more attentive to their legal and ethical obligations in transactional and regulatory matters. However, there is also much misunderstanding about Kaye Scholer, particularly the supposition that it created novel …
Liberty, Chandran Kukathas
Liberty, Chandran Kukathas
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Such is the rhetorical appeal of the idea of liberty that a variety of political philosophiesclaim to honour it. Republicans and Marxists, no less than libertarians and liberals, maintain that they and they alone are the true defenders of freedom. The literature ofcontemporary political theory is thus replete with rival analyses of the meaning ofliberty, and disputes about its measurement, distribution and institutional requirements. Our aim here is to gain some understanding of the meaning and the conditionsof liberty by working through the thicket of contemporary argument, though we mayhave to rest content with a better knowledge of the terrain.

This anthology examines 11 key issues dealing with the beginning and end of life, and presents a balanced set of 67 classic and contemporary readings on each of them. It is unique in its coverage of applied ethics, medical topics, and broad theoretical considerations of issues of life and death-the sanctity of life versus the quality of life, and the meaning of life and death. The section on Ethical Theory covers the classic theories as well as ethical relativism to orient students to the nature and importance of ethics.
