On The Possibility Of Inductive Knowledge, Raam P. Gokhale Jan 2013

On The Possibility Of Inductive Knowledge, Raam P. Gokhale

Raam P Gokhale

In this paper, we utilize a disjunction of familiar inductive beliefs—the disjunction being deductively valid—to show that we most likely have inductive knowledge, the likelihood depending on the usual inductive considerations like size and robustness of the sample, etc., i.e. on what it should depend on, not the usual 'philosophical' culprits like the old and new riddles of induction. While this is in itself philosophically significant, the implications of this for a justification of induction are also explored. Induction will be found to be supported but not justified by the proposed example. Lastly, to address this lacuna, and deriving support …

Les Codes De Conduite: Source Du Droit Global?, Gregory Lewkowicz Jan 2013

Les Codes De Conduite: Source Du Droit Global?, Gregory Lewkowicz

Gregory Lewkowicz

A Noble Cause: A Case Study Of Discrimination, Symbols, And Reciprocity, In: Diversity And European Human Rights, Yofi Tirosh

Yofi Tirosh

This chapter is part of a volume dedicated to rewriting human rights cases issued by the European Court of Human Rights. It uses the case of De La Cierva Osorio De Moscoso v. Spain (1999) as a platform to discuss the inherent tension typifying signs such as nobility titles – as merely symbolic or as carrying substantive content. The problem of one’s ownership of signs is especially acute in the case of women. I will argue that the distinction between form and substance collapses in this case, as in many other cases that involve allocation of allegedly merely symbolic signifiers …

Domination And Consumption: An Examination Of Veganism, Anarchism, And Ecofeminism, Ian Werkheiser Jan 2013

Domination And Consumption: An Examination Of Veganism, Anarchism, And Ecofeminism, Ian Werkheiser

Ian Werkheiser

Anarchism provides a useful set of theoretical tools for understanding and resisting our culture’s treatment of non-human animals. However, some points of disagreement exist in anarchist discourse, such as the question of veganism. In this paper I will use the debate around veganism as a way of exploring the anarchist discourse on non-human animals, how that discourse can benefit more mainstream work on non-human animals, and how work coming out of mainstream environmental discourse, in particular the ecofeminist work of Val Plumwood, can likewise benefit anarchist thought. Ultimately I will show that anarchism and some of the more radical strains …

The Individual's Obligation To Relinquish Unnecessary Greenhouse Gas-Emitting Devices, John Nolt Jan 2013

The Individual's Obligation To Relinquish Unnecessary Greenhouse Gas-Emitting Devices, John Nolt

John Nolt

The use of many common devices requires the emission of greenhouse gases. Examples include internal combustion engines, most heating and cooling devices, and anything that uses electrical power some of which is generated by the burning of fossil fuels. Most current schemes for reducing greenhouse gas emissions take it for granted that individuals will continue using such devices. These schemes aim, for example, to sequester the emissions or switch the energy source to wind, solar or nuclear power. But this paper contends that the potential harm of global climate change is so great and the need for emissions reduction so …
