Philanthropy As A Virtue In Late Antiquity And The Middle Ages, G. Scott Davis Jan 1996

Philanthropy As A Virtue In Late Antiquity And The Middle Ages, G. Scott Davis

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

"Philanthropy," "charity," and related concepts were well known to late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Rulers, wealthy individuals and, early on, the Christian church founded hospitals, distributed food, and established forms of relief for the needy of various sorts throughout the period. The problem comes in interpreting these activities, their motives, and their goals. Is the philanthropia of a pre-Christian philosopher of a piece with the agape, or Christian love, of a fourth-century bishop? When the Roman emperor provides bread and circuses, what does he intend and why does he do it? Does the twelfth-century nobleman intend the same? As …

Oberlin Perfectionism And Its Edwardsean Origins, Allen C. Guelzo Jan 1996

Oberlin Perfectionism And Its Edwardsean Origins, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

An impression has very generally prevailed," wrote James Harris Fairchild toward the end of his twenty-three-year presidency of Oberlin College, "that the theological views unleashed at Oberlin College by the late Rev. Charles Grandison Finney & his Associates involves a considerable departure from the accepted orthodox faith." It was an impression that Fairchild believed to be inaccurate, and he would probably be horrified to discover a century later that the prevailing impression the "Oberlin Theology" has made on historians of the nineteenth-century United States continues to be one in which Oberlin stands for almost all the progressive and enthusiastic unorthodoxies …

The Impact Of Early Presbyterian Missionary Preaching (1884-1920) On The Preaching Of The Korean Church, Sang-Hwan Kim

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The history of Protestant mission began when Korean people were suffering under Japanese colonial rule. The Bible was translated into Korean in Manchuria and Japan and following the first missionary Horace N. Allen (U.S. Korea missionary, 1884-1890) many Western missionaries began to arrive in Korea. As churches were built the need for Korean ministers necessitated establishment of theological seminaries and teaching of homiletics. History of preaching thus began. Charles A. Clark (U.S. Korea missionary, 1902-1948), who became the father of homiletics in Korea, taught the homiletic theories he studied earlier and his influence is still felt in Korea today. The …
