Being Biblical In A Pluralistic Age
Being Biblical In A Pluralistic Age
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
One way to define a disciple is “a follower of someone’s words.” In a pluralistic age, there are many words beckoning would-be disciples to particular ways of life, all promising some kind of wellness. These word-ways are ingredients of worldviews, a program or map for orienting oneself in the world. Worldviews answer core questions about human existence, often in the form of a story. This essay argues that contemporary pluralism is the result of abandoning the Bible as our control story, a loss that is as much a failure of what Charles Taylor calls the social imaginary. If this diagnosis …
Being Biblical In A Pluralistic Academy
Being Biblical In A Pluralistic Academy
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
This essay examines two senses of what it means to be biblical in a pluralistic academy. The first is to examine the Bible as a document of the university, susceptible to many kinds of critical probing. The rest of the essay explores the second way, which is to use the Bible as the authoritative control story that articulates how Christians view Jesus Christ as the ground, grammar, and goal of both the university and the universe itself. I examine how biblical authority should and should not be deployed in the academy by looking at the natural and human sciences. I …
Cognitive Dissonance And Cosmic Conflict: A Rules-Of-Engagement Framework For Thinking About Prayer, Providence, And Evil, John C. Peckham
Cognitive Dissonance And Cosmic Conflict: A Rules-Of-Engagement Framework For Thinking About Prayer, Providence, And Evil, John C. Peckham
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
Many Christians experience severe cognitive dissonance when they try to reconcile belief that God is wholly good (omnibenevolent) and all-powerful (omnipotent) with the suffering and evil in this world. Would not anyone who is loving and kind and who is powerful enough to do so, act to prevent the horrible suffering in this world? This article attempts to address such cognitive dissonance by offering a rules-of-engagement framework for thinking about the problem of evil and the related issues of providence and prayer. Regarding providence, many ask why God does not act to prevent evils more often, or does so some …

Exegeting The Bible And The Social Location Of The Gospel Recipients: A Case For Worldview Transformation, Boubakar Sanou
Exegeting The Bible And The Social Location Of The Gospel Recipients: A Case For Worldview Transformation, Boubakar Sanou
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
Social location greatly influences how one reads and interprets Scripture. Therefore, for the Bible to impact the lives of its hearers and contribute to the transformation of their worldview assumptions, its interpretation and application need to be both hermeneutically sound and contextually relevant.

Islam, Christianity, Traditional Religions And Power Politics In Northern Nigeria Since Pre-Islamic Period, Emmanuel M. Abar

Problem
Currently in Northern Nigeria, religious interaction among the three major religious traditions, Islam, Christianity, and African Traditional Religion, is marred by violent religious conflicts. Also, competing concepts of religious legitimacy, which appeal to the historical heritage of Nigeria, are often used to validate and justify the violation of religious freedom. Does the current state of religious interaction among the various religious groups reflect the true heritage of religious interaction in Northern Nigeria? Or is it possible that the history of the interaction between African Traditional Religions, Islam, and Christianity in the past might actually be a heritage that points …
Martin Luther: Master Of Paradoxes, Trevor O'Reggio
Martin Luther: Master Of Paradoxes, Trevor O'Reggio
Faculty Publications
Martin Luther, the great German and Protestant reformer sees himself as following this biblical tradition of speaking in paradoxes. This paradoxical quality about Luther’s theological ideas evades easy explanation or simplistic interpretation. Some consider that Luther’s theological genius enabled him to view both sides of an issue. Others stumble over his paradoxical and apparently conflicting statements. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and critically evaluate some of Luther’s usage of paradoxes in his writings.
