Excavations at site 41 BX 1, located behind the Olmos Dam in San Antonio, Texas, were funded by the San Antonio River Authority. The excavations resulted in the documentation of a Late Archaic cemetery and Early to Late Transitional Archaic occupations. Thirteen human burials, accompanied by a variety of grave offerings, including deer antlers and marine shell ornaments, were radiocarbon dated 1680 B.C. (maximum date) to A.D. 260 (minimum date). In addition, two distinct occupational areas, horizontally separated from the cemetery, were investigated.

In conjunction with the excavations, final resource management negotiations resulted in mitigation measures of avoidance and protection …

In March 1987, the Center for Archaeological Research of The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted test excavations on Lot 1 of New City Block 125 in downtown San Antonio. The purpose of the excavations was to determine if any remains of foundations or artifactual deposits were still intact beneath the surface, in preparation for the construction of an addition to a parking garage. A search was also made for remains of the Concepcion Acequia that once formed the western boundary of the lot. Three backhoe trenches ranging from 42 to 90 feet in length and from 26 to …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) conducted archaeological testing along portions of FM 2790 near Elm Creek in southern Bexar County, Texas, in May 1988. Testing was performed to determine whether portions of the previously recorded prehistoric archaeological site of 41BX518 existed within the right-of-way near the drainage. Results of testing determined that 41BX518 existed beyond the right-of-way limits of the roadway and no subsurface deposits were identified. No further work is recommended within this portion of FM 2790 and a report of testing follows, including comments on natural soil deposits along this portion of the former …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archaeological site 41GM23 was tested by the cultural resources staff of the Texas State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) during the week of June 6,1988. The test revealed that, although the site has been disturbed by clearing and bulldozing, intact cultural deposits remained. The deposits were about 60 cm thick and contained a hearth and other evidence of prehistoric occupation. The cultural material recovered suggests that the site was occupied during the Early Ceramic and Late Archaic periods. The site is eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places, and for listing as a State Archaeological …

Results Of Metal Detector Survey, Testing Operations, And Archival Studies The Wooten-Seale Plantation Site 41rt362, John W. Clark Jr.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Preliminary historical and archaeological investigation of the Robert Henry Seale farm residences (41RT362) utilizing a metal detector and limited shovel testing indicate that a recent owner of the property removed both residential structures, destroying the site and extensively damaging any buried deposits. It is the estimation of the cultural resources staff of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation that the physical remains of the occupation of the property have been disrupted to such an extent that they now have no value in answering cultural-historical questions.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archaeological site 41KA87 was tested by the cultural resources staff of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) in September, 1987. Few prehistoric tools were found and well-defined features were lacking. Cultural deposits were about 50 cm thick and contained lithic debris, mussel shell, and other evidence of prehistoric occupation. The cultural material recovered suggests that site 41KA87 was occupied during the Late Archaic and Late Prehistoric periods. The site is not considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, and it is not recommended for listing as a State Archeological Landmark.

The Politics Of Experience: Robert Morris, Minimalism, And The 1960s, Maurice Berger Jan 1988

The Politics Of Experience: Robert Morris, Minimalism, And The 1960s, Maurice Berger

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Robert Morris's oeuvre, unlike the work of most other so-called minimalist artists, is both stylistically and intellectually diverse. His range was broad: expressionist paintings, Duchamp-inspired objects, dances and performances, minimalist sculptures, large scale installations and sound environments, earth and land reclamation works, films and videos, and political acts against the museum, the labor economy, and the Vietnam war. The philosophical sources for Morris's art (he was a philosophy major at Reed College in the late-1950s) are equally rich: Herbert Marcuse, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Michel Foucault, Jean Piaget, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Charles Sanders Peirce. As choreographer, writer of influential theoretical texts, and …

The Filiation Of The Music Illustrations In A Boethius In Milan And In The Piacenza Codice Magno, Elizabeth Teviotdale Dec 1987

The Filiation Of The Music Illustrations In A Boethius In Milan And In The Piacenza Codice Magno, Elizabeth Teviotdale

Elizabeth C Teviotdale

Proposes a common prototype from the tradition of illustrated manuscripts of Cassiodorus’s Institutiones as the explanation for the close iconographic relationship between music illustrations in a manuscript (here dated to the 11th century) of the De arithmetica and De musica of Boethius (Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana, MS C.128 inf.) and in the 12th-century Codice Magno (Piacenza, Biblioteca Capitolare, MS 65). Suggests that the iconography may have originated in a Carolingian scriptorium.
