Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In August and September 1986, personnel from Prewitt and Associates, Inc. conducted an inventory and assessment of cultural resources in five recreational area tracts above the conservation pool elevation of the proposed Stacy Reservoir in Concho, Coleman. and Runnels counties, Texas. These investigations were sponsored by the Colorado River Municipal Water District in compliance with federal requirements for a construction permit from the Corps of Engineers. Approximately 1,690 acres were surveyed. and five previously unrecorded sites were discovered and documented. Cairn feature sites 41CC213 and 41CC237 are deemed potentially significant and should be preserved or investigated to determine their significance …

New Drawings By Erhard Schön And His Circle, Alison G. Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

Erhard Schön was the most prolific draughtsman in Nuremberg after Sebald Beham during the second quarter of the sixteenth century, between the end of Dürer's activity and the beginning of Virgil Solis' and Jost Amman's. A pupil of Dürer renowned for his prodigious woodcut production -- some 1,200 book illustrations and 500 single sheets -- Schön also executed at least thirty-eight drawings. These works, never published as a group, are mostly presentation drawings in pen and ink housed at Berlin, Cologne, and Erlangen. They date primarily to the 1530s and early 1540s and have been linked chiefly to Schön's prints. …

Entropy And Dialectic: The Signatures Of Robert Smithson, Gary Shapiro Jul 1988

Entropy And Dialectic: The Signatures Of Robert Smithson, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

It has been the fate of a number of twentieth-century artists that the stronger their attacks on the history and traditions of art, the more joy is taken by the guardians of that history and tradition in demonstrating that their work and thought can be incorporated within it. This can be illustrated briefly by juxtaposing Robert Smithson's apparently radical rejections of art history, humanism, biologism and formalism, with some recent attempts to recuperate his work for a tradition. Smithson, you will recall, sought alternatives to museum culture in a series of actual and projected works that aim at effecting a …

The Jean Cocteau Collection: How 'Astonishing'?, Paul J. Archambault Apr 1988

The Jean Cocteau Collection: How 'Astonishing'?, Paul J. Archambault

The Courier

Between 1963 and 1971, the Syracuse University Library acquired more than two hundred fifty holograph manuscripts by Jean Cocteau. These are now to be found in the George Arents Research Library for Special Collections, where they enhance an already rich assortment of French manuscripts that have been thoroughly listed in a previous article in the Courier. An abridged history of their acquisition might be told here. The story is interesting, for it includes several of those ironical twists that made so much of Cocteau's life seem like a chassé-croisé with Death, choreographed by the artist himself.

An Analysis Of Early Woodland Pottery From Southwest Michigan, James W. Cogswell Apr 1988

An Analysis Of Early Woodland Pottery From Southwest Michigan, James W. Cogswell

Masters Theses

Significant amounts of Early Woodland pottery have been recovered from excavations in southwest Michigan. Radiocarbon and thermoluminescence assays date this pottery from 590 B.C. to A.D. 10. This pottery is analyzed in great detail, providing evidence for attributes heretofore unreported in the Great Lakes area. Selected vessel attributes are presented in a chronological framework, and potential trends in the regional development of Early Woodland pottery are discussed.

The Chimney Fireplace In Colonial Virginia, Catherine Howe Grosfils Apr 1988

The Chimney Fireplace In Colonial Virginia, Catherine Howe Grosfils

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The study of an architectural feature, the chimney fireplace, suggests changing social patterns in late colonial Virginia society. An examination of fireplace equipment in 175 room-by-room inventories, together with evidence from surviving buildings and documentary sources, reveals changes in chimney fireplaces which in turn signal deep-seated changes within this colonial society. To place the Virginia chimney within its broader context, a brief history of the chimney fireplace precedes the study of changing construction materials, fuel and fireplace equipment, and heated and unheated rooms. The social significance of the chimney fireplace, a status symbol in colonial Virginia, is discussed with relation …

The Linguistic Affiliation And Phoneticism Of Teotihuacan Iconography, David Brown Mar 1988

The Linguistic Affiliation And Phoneticism Of Teotihuacan Iconography, David Brown

Art & Art History ETDs

This study examines one of the major issues of pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican history--the identity of the Teotihuacan culture--through a correlation of figurative art and iconography with writing and language. An examination of the last century of Mesoamerican scholarship points out the inherent shortcomings of reconstructing pre-Conquest history from Nahua ethnohistorical documents in the early-Colonial period. A re-evaluation of methodological assumptions used in the reconstructions of pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican history leads to the conclusion that the Teotihuacan culture should be studied as much as possible within its cosmopolitan context of the Early-Urban period. Further reassessment of previous iconographic studies reveals that many interpretations …

Joseph Drilling, Alison Stewart Mar 1988

Joseph Drilling, Alison Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

The popularity of Joseph as carpenter-provider for Mary and Jesus was discussed by Cynthia Hahn last year (LXVIII1,9 86, 54- 66) in relation to Campin's Merode Triptych and other examples of 15th-century art and literature. In Campin's painting, Joseph is represented in the right wing seated amid an array of carpenter's tools, pieces of wood, and handmade wooden objects. The oft discussed winepress strainer, or firescreen (the latter suggested by Hahn), which Joseph drills, appears to have a visual correlative in an unpublished anonymous 15th-century Flemish panel painting in the Museo Correr, Venice (Figs. 1, 2).

There, on the verso …

Results Of Metal Detector Survey, Testing Operations, And Archival Studies The Wooten-Seale Plantation, Site 41rt362 Robertson County, Texas, John W. Clark

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Preliminary historical and archaeological investigation of the Robert Henry Seale farm residences (41RT362) utilizin g a metal detector and limited shovel testing indicate that a recent owner of the property removed both residential structures, destroying the site and extensively damaging any buried deposits. It is the estimation of the cultural resources staff of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation that the physical remains of the occupation of the property have been disrupted to such an extent that they now have no value in answering cultural- historical questions.

Archaeological Testing Of Site 41dw260, Dewitt County, Texas, Wayne C. Young

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) conducted archaeological testing on Site 41DW260 in DeWitt County during January 1988. The site is located along FM 3402 about 2.5 miles west of Cuero, Texas and extends from the north side of the highway onto private property. Testing has shown that the area within the right-of-way is a 20-25 cm deep prehistoric campsite where the primary activities were the reduction of fist-sized flint cobbles into usable flakes and the collection of freshwater mussels as a food resource. A total of 16 one meter squares were excavated into the narrow right-of-way …

Archaeological Monitoring Of The San Jose Acequia (41bx267), Wastewater Facilities Improvements Program, San Antonio, Texas, I. Waynne Cox

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In January 1986, the Center for Archaeological Research entered into a contract to monitor construction for a sewer line for the San Antonio Wastewater Improvements Program. The primary concern was if the San Jose Acequia would be in the location of construction. Monitoring operations began in October of the same year and continued until January 1987. The acequia was exposed in three locations and proved to be an unlined ditch.

Archaeological Monitoring Of The Ashby Street Drainage Project, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, Anne A. Fox, I. Waynne Cox

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In April 1987, the authors monitored excavation of trenches for a drainage project in the area of North St. Mary's and Ashby Streets north of downtown San Antonio. The main concern was to observe and record the location and configuration of the Upper Labor Acequia in this area when it was crossed by trenching machines. A cross section of the acequia was recorded at the intersection of St. Mary's and Myrtle Streets.

Archaeological Investigations At Mission Concepcion, Fall Of 1986, Anne A. Fox

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In October 1986, the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted limited test excavations at Mission Nuestra Senora de la Purisima Concepci6n (41 BX 12) for the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. The purpose of the excavations was to determine whether buried wall footings and occupation surfaces were preserved in an area where a drain pipe was proposed to be installed to carry rainwater away from the convento. Eleven test units were excavated at points where the foundations of the first two-story convento were expected to cross the area. Remnants of the footings of …
