The Anthology of American Folk Music is a collection of eight-four selections of southern vernacular recordings made for commercial record labels in the 1920s and 1930s and assembled into a unified collage by Harry Smith. Smith was an experimental filmmaker, painter, and self-taught anthropologist with a deep interest in renaissance hermeticism and mysticism who worked with Moe Asch in 1952 to release the six-record set and accompanying handbook on Folkways Records. The release was heralded by musicians and critics as an essential piece of influence on the folk music revival. Despite this, the Anthology sold poorly and quickly faced legal …

พระเจ้าวรวงศ์เธอ กรมหมื่นนราธิปพงศ์ประพันธ์ (กรมหมื่นนราธิปพงศ์ประพันธ์) ทรงเป็นนักการทูตที่ทรงงานยาวนานกว่า 5 ทศวรรษ พระปรีชาสามารถทางการทูตเป็นที่กล่าวขานในวงการการทูตและผู้ศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์การทูตไทยว่า ทรงยึดผลประโยชน์ของประเทศเหนือสิ่งอื่นใด หากแต่ยังไม่มีการศึกษาเกี่ยวกับบทบาทและวิธีการทางการทูตของพระองค์ท่านที่ครอบคลุมระยะเวลาที่ทรงงานทางการทูต วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จึงมีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิธีการทูตของพระองค์ ซึ่งการที่พระองค์สามารถทรงงานได้อย่างยาวนานเกิดจากพระปรีชาสามารถที่ทรงรู้จักวิธีการปรับตัวต่อสถานการณ์และบริบททางการเมืองที่ผันผวนทั้งภายในและต่างประเทศ อนึ่ง การทรงงานทางการทูตอย่างยาวนานส่งผลให้เกิดเครือข่ายทางการเมืองและการทูตที่กลายเป็นแรงสนับสนุนให้พระองค์ทรงมีบทบาททางการทูตอย่างต่อเนื่อง วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้แบ่งการศึกษาเป็น 3 ช่วง ตามช่วงเวลาการทรงงาน ได้แก่ (1) ค.ศ. 1917 - 1938 ซึ่งเป็นเส้นทางการทูตของพระองค์จากยุคสมบูรณาญาสิทธิราชย์สู่ช่วงการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง (2) ค.ศ. 1938 - 1946 ซึ่งเป็นช่วงการทรงงานกับจอมพล ป. พิบูลสงครามและการที่พระองค์ทรงเป็นที่ไว้วางใจของรัฐบาลไทยโดยทรงเป็นผู้แทนในการเจรจาครั้งสำคัญ ๆ (3) ค.ศ. 1946 - 1969 ซึ่งทรงงานกับรัฐบาลจอมพล ป. This Article examines the 1948 Displaced Persons Act which provided for the ability of certain European refugees to immigrate to the United States following World War II. The 1948 Act discriminated against Jewish survivors of the Holocaust and imprinted Nazi racial laws and ideology upon U.S. law. Moreover, in debates over passage of such a law, a vast amount of overt antisemitism emerged, generated by politicians and ordinary citizens, which went well beyond the question of the admission of refugees to the United States. On April 18, 1942, Americans woke up to the thrilling news that American airmen had bombed the enemy capital of Tokyo, Japan. Americans all across the country were made aware of the bombing of Japan by multiple media sources at the time including newspapers, propaganda posters, newsreels, and movies. The ways in which these media outlets portrayed the American bombing of Japan would directly impact the perception of American citizens regarding the event. The bombing, eventually termed the Doolittle Raid after the general who led the mission, James Doolittle, immediately became a source of American propaganda for the U.S. media.

Chinese immigrants were integral to many industries of early California. In Humboldt, they worked in industries such as logging, fishing, and railroads, and provided essential services, such as farming, gathering, or laundry, to the local economy. Chinese immigrants in Humboldt County during the late 19th and early 20th centuries faced systemic discrimination that became a defining feature of the region's identity. State legislation, including the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, along with national economic instability, particularly the Long Depression (1873–1896) and xenophobic policies in California influenced legislation and attitudes in Humboldt County. Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

This paper uses archival and ethnological research to analyze the fates of former synagogues during two totalitarian regimes in present-day Slovakia. The processes described here were catalyzed by the Holocaust. Between 1938 and 1945, over 100,000 Jews from Slovakia were murdered. Out of the 228 Jewish religious communities (JRCs) active before the war, only 79 were reconstituted after liberation. Most were later disbanded because of aliyah to Palestine/Israel. Their abandoned synagogues passed into the administration of the newly founded Central Union of Jewish Religious Communities (CUJRC). During the Communist era (1948-1989), the majority of these synagogues were sold because the …

The article analyzes the life path of Rabbi Mordukh Krol in the background of the socio-political transformations in Soviet Ukraine (1920-1940s). For the first time, special sources are introduced into the scholarly circulation such as the Rabbi’s correspondences addressed to the Jews of Denmark, Germany, France, the USA, the USSR, Palestine, and Africa during the Holodomor. Major milestones of the Rabbi’s life are identified. He served in the Chernihiv and Melitopol Region, in Voroshylovhrad, Novoukrayinka of Odessa, and later Kirovohrad regions, in Dnipropetrovsk. This thesis examines the role of sensory experiences in religious syncretism in nineteenth-century rural Finland, focusing on how pre-Christian elements were incorporated into Christian traditions through communal rites of passage and seasonal festivals. By analyzing the sensory aspects of rituals and practices, this study demonstrates how sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch mediated the complex relationship between pagan and Christian beliefs, enabling the persistence and transformation of older practices within the framework of new religious beliefs. Between 1854 and 1929, the placement system that became known as the orphan trains in modern scholarship, removed neglected and orphaned children from the dangerous streets of New York City and attempted to place them into homes across America that would benefit their futures. While this charity-run program was well-intentioned, the estimated two hundred fifty thousand children of the orphan trains experienced a mix of encounters upon their placements. Although many homes provided a caring environment for these children, others did not. This article discusses the history of land development and infrastructure along the Santa Ana River in Southern California. The river plays a significant role in the landscape of many of Southern California’s cities and urban geographies but has been relatively underdiscussed in literature. This article approaches the river using a combination of historic ethnography and sociocultural theory to unpack the meanings of the infrastructure of the river and its relation to Southern Californians.
