Inciting Peace From The Inside Out, Stephen G. Adubato, Ebere Bosco Amakwe, Katherine Hinic, Sarita Maldjian, Forrest Pritchett, Jon Radwan, Nicholas Sooy, Chad Thralls

Conferences

Violence and war can be incited, and so can peace. This volume shares select addresses and responses from Seton Hall University’s 2/7/23 conference “Inciting Peace From The Inside Out.” A multi-disciplinary range of scholars each addresses how reconciliation processes grow from spiritual dynamics. Multiple religious traditions teach contemplative praxes that prioritize and nurture personal reflection oriented toward peace. Social conflicts divide, so engaging them with a partisan orientation only serves to escalate harmful rifts. In contrast, bringing personal awareness and sensitivity, spiritual balance, and holistic integral perspective to conflict can transcend divisions and work toward unity. This volume is supported …

Village, ‘Arsh, Ṣaff And Commune: Local Political Actors And The Modalities Of State Intervention In Tassaft, 1962-1977, Hugh Roberts

Journal of Amazigh Studies

This article is an extract (with an expanded introduction and conclusion) from chapter 6, ‘Local politics and regional trends’, of the thesis, Political Development in Algeria: the region of Greater Kabylia, that I submitted for the degree of D.Phil at Oxford University in April 1980. Since I found no British publisher for my thesis (most had never heard of Kabylia in those days), it has not been published, and I am grateful to the Journal of Amazigh Studies for its willingness to make this work available to its readers. The whole of chapter 6 of my thesis and much …

The Secrets Of Christian Others: Hungarian Catholic Intellectuals Debate Ecumenism At A Transylvanian Pilgrimage Site, Marc Roscoe Loustau Jun 2024

The Secrets Of Christian Others: Hungarian Catholic Intellectuals Debate Ecumenism At A Transylvanian Pilgrimage Site, Marc Roscoe Loustau

Journal of Global Catholicism

Claims about a shared Christian tradition animate European debates about religious otherness, but more remains to be known about how Catholics on Europe’s near-margins understand ecumenical unity among churches. I analyze contemporary Hungarian Catholic intellectuals’ publications about a controversy at the Hungarian national shrine, Our Lady of Csíksomlyó, in Transylvania. When a priest wrote that Csíksomlyó’s annual pilgrimage commemorated sixteenth-century Catholics’ victory over an invading Unitarian army, Transylvania’s Unitarian bishop denounced the origin as an undocumented myth. Prominent Catholic ethnologists, historians, and theologians agreed that, in the name of ecumenism, intellectuals should not publicly mention the origin narrative. But they …

Geotransformación And Overcoming Underdevelopment In Socialist Cuba, Danny Meza Keane Jun 2024

Geotransformación And Overcoming Underdevelopment In Socialist Cuba, Danny Meza Keane

Comparative Literature M.A. Essays

The term geotransformación, coined and theorized by Cuban geographer and revolutionary Antonio Núñez Jiménez in his 1968 book Geotransformación de Cuba, is an analytic frame which emphasizes the interconnectedness of social and natural transformation. As such, geotransformación functions as a conceptual weapon against not only theories of geographic determinism attempting to depoliticize history, but also grand historical narratives which center the human by overstating its independence from the forces of nature. Taking geotransformación as a conceptual compass for a return to the Cuban Revolution’s decisive early years, I engage in close readings of primary texts including geographic treatises, legal documents, …

Dumping In The Global Dixie: Circle Of Poison And The Contamination Of The Global South, Amy M. Hay Jun 2024

Dumping In The Global Dixie: Circle Of Poison And The Contamination Of The Global South, Amy M. Hay

History Faculty Publications

The 1981 publication of David Weir and Mark Shapiro’s exposé Circle of Poison almost ten years after the banning of DDT represented how the landscape of understandings about hazardous chemicals and their regulation had changed. The book exposed two things. One was the ways power had reconfigured itself, which in turn highlighted the ways the story Silent Spring told, which effectively moved hearts and minds to make change happen. One thing that remained hidden, however, to both Rachel Carson and Weir and Shapiro, was the degree to which the chemical industry traded at the local and regional level, conducting international …

The life of Harvey Wilson Goodwin as a female impersonator, known as Harvey Lee, during the 1900s helps to establish a connection for fellow members of the LGBTQIA+ community. His resilience to continue performing in the face of life struggles is an ode to the ever-continuous challenges the community faces throughout time.
