Towards Orthodox Polity: Episcopal Apology In Eusebius Of Caesarea’S Ecclesiastical History, Chris Cox Oct 2024

Towards Orthodox Polity: Episcopal Apology In Eusebius Of Caesarea’S Ecclesiastical History, Chris Cox

Studia Antiqua

During the last twenty years Eusebius of Caesarea’s Ecclesiastical History has received some examination by scholars as a work of apology. In this paper, I propose that one element of Eusebius’ apologetics is a defense of the episcopal polity which existed during his lifetime. This is evident through the priority which the episcopacy is given throughout Ecclesiastical History’s narrative, and the authority that Eusebius presumes the episcopate holds from its origin. Additionally, it is possible that groups which Eusebius considered heretical and who rejected the authority of orthodox bishops may have motivated his episcopal emphasis.

A Pauline Dress Code Or A Roman Analogy: Reinterpreting Paul’S Discourse In 1 Corinthians 11:1–16, Nicole Francis Oct 2024

A Pauline Dress Code Or A Roman Analogy: Reinterpreting Paul’S Discourse In 1 Corinthians 11:1–16, Nicole Francis

Studia Antiqua

Historically, the debate surrounding 1 Corinthians 11 has focused on whether or not Paul is referring to women veiling their heads in church or simply wearing their hair up. This debate roots itself in a nearly universally accepted assumption that Paul is requesting a sort of dress-code standard for praying and prophesying in church. While this has been the dominant reading in scholarship for centuries, there are numerous compelling weaknesses in this interpretation. This paper will explore those weaknesses and provide an alternative reading: When confronted with group conflict, Paul attempts to reason his way through the hierarchical structure he …

Retracing The Historical Via Dolorosa: A Logistical Exercise In First-Century Jerusalem, Calan Christensen Oct 2024

Retracing The Historical Via Dolorosa: A Logistical Exercise In First-Century Jerusalem, Calan Christensen

Studia Antiqua

Since the identification of Herod’s palace on the Western Hill of Jerusalem as the Praetorium (πραιτώριον) of the Gospels, the notion of Jesus being tried at the Antonia Fortress, and the associated Via Dolorosa, has been relegated to mere tradition. This presented a prime juncture to responsibly reinform a tantamount Christian pilgrimage tradition through the lens of archaeology. Unfortunately, this opportunity has seemingly been neglected by the greater academic community. Any scholar that ventures to mention a plausible route from the Praetorium to Golgotha hastily assumes a route through the Upper City and neglects to cite any compelling evidence. This …

The Different Esthers Of The Septuagint And Masoretic Text: How The Inclusion Of God Changes The Character Of Esther, Heidyn Von Bose Oct 2024

The Different Esthers Of The Septuagint And Masoretic Text: How The Inclusion Of God Changes The Character Of Esther, Heidyn Von Bose

Studia Antiqua

The Book of Esther is a unique work that contains significant differences between the Hebrew and Greek versions of the text. One significant difference is the character of Esther herself. In the throne room scene of chapter five (or addition D in the LXX), the LXX Esther is more passive than the Esther of the Hebrew Bible because of the inclusion of God and more specifically the differences in the power structure between God, Esther, and the king. By analyzing the different characters’ movements and the language describing them in chapter 5 or Addition D, the differences of Esther’s character …

Embodiment And Ritual Clothing: Dressing The Israelite High Priest, Ally Huffmire Oct 2024

Embodiment And Ritual Clothing: Dressing The Israelite High Priest, Ally Huffmire

Studia Antiqua

Exodus 28 and 39 contain a detailed description of the clothing God instructed to be made and worn by Israelite priests. In this essay, sacred clothing will be understood through the lens of ritual studies, characterizing clothing with a sense of liminality that defines and endows the human wearer with identity and power. The social meanings and implications of the high priest’s dress will be reconstructed by engaging in sensory criticism, drawing upon insights from the greater eastern Mediterranean world. Given the ancient world’s unique conception of a permeable body, ritual clothing had the ability to imbue the wearer with …

The Carnivalesque And The Carmel Competition In 1 Kings 18, Paul Bryner Oct 2024

The Carnivalesque And The Carmel Competition In 1 Kings 18, Paul Bryner

Studia Antiqua

While humor is a difficult feature to identify in the Bible, the concept of the “carnivalesque”—a form of literary humor with sociological implications, coined by Mikhail Bakhtin — is much easier to apply. I argue for the presence of carnivalesque themes in the Elijah narrative of 1 Kings 18 which give a subtle, implicit social commentary on Israelite society.

On A Night Of A Thousand Stars: The Tragic History Behind Argentina’S Dirty War, Clay B. Wiley Oct 2024

On A Night Of A Thousand Stars: The Tragic History Behind Argentina’S Dirty War, Clay B. Wiley

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Analyzing Andrea Yaryura Clark's On the Night of a Thousand Stars, this book review essay places the novel taking place during Argentina's Dirty War and examines its quality for teaching readers about the military junta that ruled the country in the late 1970s and 80s. By examining historical events and how they affect each character in the novel, the author evaluates and compares each with how they are portrayed in history. In addition to these evaluations, the author also reflects on his own experience in learning about Argentina's Dirty War for the first time in a Latin American History …

Exploitation, Gentrification, And Commercialization: The Evolution Of Third Spaces For Marginalized People In Post-Democratization Cape Town, Nicole Overbay Oct 2024

Exploitation, Gentrification, And Commercialization: The Evolution Of Third Spaces For Marginalized People In Post-Democratization Cape Town, Nicole Overbay

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper explores the impact of high-cost leisure spaces that are emerging in low-income marginalized communities within the Cape Town metropolitan area of South Africa after democratization. The resilience and cultural significance of unregulated third spaces, like shebeens, despite governmental suppression demonstrates the importance of these venues to marginalized South Africans. Through the examination of the gentrification of Bo Kaap and Khayelitsha, this paper argues that the pervasive trend of commercialization (which is supposedly for economic empowerment of said areas), can exclude non-White residents and corrode the generations-long cultural significance created in third spaces. This barrier disproportionately harms Black and …

Unease At Home: Evading And Resisting The Draft During The Vietnam War, Michael R. Beadle Oct 2024

Unease At Home: Evading And Resisting The Draft During The Vietnam War, Michael R. Beadle

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

In Evading and Resisting the Draft, this work defines and provides examples of draft evasion and resistance by prospective draftees in the United States during the Vietnam War. This work seeks to consider the motives and actions taken by draft evaders and resisters in the context of the overarching Cold War and tumult of the Vietnam War era. Attention is given to various demographic groups from African American, rural, and working-class communities and the disparities faced by many. In understanding these ideas, actions, and motives, readers gain a deeper understanding of the relationships forged between government and individuals during the …

Beyond The Battlefield: The Social And Legal Status Of Women In Sparta, Kiera Clark Oct 2024

Beyond The Battlefield: The Social And Legal Status Of Women In Sparta, Kiera Clark

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The social and legal status of women in Sparta differed from other ancient societies, as they were afforded more social mobility and rights to ownership of property than their counterparts in places such as Athens. While other ancient Greek societies secluded women in the home, women in Sparta were educated publicly and able to move freely in public. However, it is important to note that there is limited material and textual evidence from Sparta, which leaves much up to interpretation and requires scholars to make assumptions based on the practices of other Greek societies. Further, the majority of sources regarding …

The Rise And Fall Of Caribbean Piracy: A Socio-Technical Analysis Of The War Of Spanish Succession, Maritime Innovation, And Edward Randolf’S Policy, Dominique M. Salinski Oct 2024

The Rise And Fall Of Caribbean Piracy: A Socio-Technical Analysis Of The War Of Spanish Succession, Maritime Innovation, And Edward Randolf’S Policy, Dominique M. Salinski

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper argues that the mode and historical context in which piracy ascended in the Caribbean after the War of the Spanish Succession, as well as the historical interrelation between maritime technology and pirate tactics, coalesced into a diachronic Damocles Sword that resulted in the downfall of piracy in the Golden Age. Sanctioning piratical enterprises as a subconventional maritime strategy displayed a geopolitical reliance on piracy by great powers. However, the depraved treatment conventional sailors received across all major European navies generated a social stratum that eventually bore the Golden Age of Piracy, while simultaneously contributing significantly to British naval …

The True Legacy Of Stono: How The Stono Rebellion Of 1739 Changed South Carolina, David S. Wilkie Oct 2024

The True Legacy Of Stono: How The Stono Rebellion Of 1739 Changed South Carolina, David S. Wilkie

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

Most of the research surrounding South Carolina’s Stono Slave Rebellion revolves around the planning and execution of the rebellion, the motivation of the slaves that chose to participate in the rebellion, and the immediate response of white slaveowners to the rebellion. Conversely, my research focuses on the long-term impact of the rebellion on the institution of slavery in South Carolina. Over the course of my research, I have explored the impact that the rebellion had on South Carolina slaveholders and lawmakers. I argue that the Stono Rebellion generated a fear response among whites in South Carolina that led to the …
