"Insanity" As An American Empire: The Canton Insane Asylum For American Indians, 1902-1934, Thanh Chi Nguyen
Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This graduate thesis involves a retelling of the history of the now defunct Canton Insane Asylum, built in the early 20th century located in Canton, South Dakota. It was America’s first federal psychiatric facility dedicated exclusively for American Indians. The Canton Insane Asylum for American Indians is a touchstone whose microhistory reflects larger political and economic sentiments in both the state of South Dakota and in the United States writ large. Conceiving South Dakota, as first and foremost a white settler society erected on land forcibly wrested from American Indian people, the asylum played an important economic development role and …

On/ In The Ground With Vietnamese Communists: The Cu Chi Tunnels In The Classroom, Wen-Qing Ngoei
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
Undergraduates often arrive in my classes convinced that great men, and a few exceptional women, are the ones who make history. Here, they think of power wielded by presidents, generals, and self-styled geniuses of strategy and diplomacy. (Henry Kissinger’s name invariably bubbles up in class discussions, like it or not.) Perhaps this happens elsewhere? In Singapore, this mindset likely takes root because the country’s record of benevolent authoritarianism underpins the legitimacy and influence of political elites. Equally, male citizens of Singapore perform compulsory military service before entering university and internalize, readily or grudgingly, that rank confers power—it is power—and that …

Syncretic Spirits / Espíritus Sincréticos, Angelica Tapia - Estrada
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
Syncretic Spirits / Espíritus Sincréticos is a multimedia exhibition that invites viewers into a fantastical space where cultural identity and perception intertwine. Colorful shaped panels, sculptural installations, prints, and drawings bridge physical and metaphysical realms. Personal archetypes intuitively inspired by natural forms drive the work.
Influenced by the dualities of my upbringing as a first-generation Mexican American, I was immersed in Mexican culture through my family traditions while finding a home in the nurturing embrace of the heartland. The work has become a means of reclaiming a new layered sense of self, disentangling from my Catholic upbringing, embracing indigenous healing …

Exchange Of Uoc-Mp Priests For Prisoners Of War In The Context Of National Security And Religious Relations, Liudmyla Shtanko, Igor Makarenko
Exchange Of Uoc-Mp Priests For Prisoners Of War In The Context Of National Security And Religious Relations, Liudmyla Shtanko, Igor Makarenko
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The exchange of UOC-MP priests for prisoners of war is a complex and multifaceted issue encompassing political, humanitarian, and religious dimensions, which have become particularly relevant in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine. On the one hand, the exchange of priests can be viewed as a humanitarian act aimed at liberating captured soldiers; on the other hand, it serves as a political maneuver that provokes conflicting sentiments among citizens and religious communities. Considering the situation with prisoners of war, Ukraine sought effective methods to secure the return of its citizens, including through the mechanism of exchanging UOC-MP priests. Although …
Establishment Of The Macedonian Orthodox Church After World War Ii And The Reaction Of The Serbian Orthodox Church (Historical-Canonical Research), Ivan Yovchev
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The history of the Orthodox Church is abundant with examples of the emergence of Local Churches and their “path to the church diptychs.” Contemporary church history also provides numerous canonical cases of individual Local Churches striving for independence. Such efforts include those of the Orthodox faithful in the Republic of North Macedonia, who seek church recognition and independence in the organization and governance of their ecclesiastical diocese. The period examined in this article is marked by numerous events and dynamic developments that have significantly influenced the relationship between the Macedonian and Serbian Churches. The content of this article is primarily …

Taking A Stand: The Southern Agrarians As Political Activists, 1930-1940, John Thomas B Justus
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Following the publication of their symposium I’ll Take My Stand in 1930, the Southern Agrarians attempted to establish their own political movement based on their ideals. Contrary to the common depiction of them then and now as mere archconservatives, the Agrarians were heirs of the republican-populist tradition of Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and William Jennings Bryan that opposed centralized economic and political power in favor a society freeholders and producers. Their adherence to this tradition manifested in their support of policies that were far reaching in their scope such as land reform, government loans for first time landowners, free trade, …
Celtic Pagan Influence In The Early Irish Church: The Conversion Of Ulster, Cassidy M. Mcnally
Celtic Pagan Influence In The Early Irish Church: The Conversion Of Ulster, Cassidy M. Mcnally
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This dissertation explores the influence of Celtic Pagan traditions on the early Irish Church in Ulster, from the introduction of Christianity in the late fourth century to the Viking invasions of the twelfth century. By integrating historical texts, archaeological findings, and comparative religious studies, it investigates how pre-Christian beliefs and rituals were assimilated into early Christian practices. The study begins by examining the arrival of Christianity in Ulster, highlighting how Celtic Paganism, characterized by its pantheon, nature worship, and druidic traditions, shaped the Christian framework. It delves into how early Christian leaders, such St. Patrick and St. Brigid, navigated these …
Park Field: The Impact Of The Army Signal Corps Aviation School In The Greater Memphis Area, Ben Smitherman
Park Field: The Impact Of The Army Signal Corps Aviation School In The Greater Memphis Area, Ben Smitherman
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This research aims to place Park Field near Millington, TN in its greater historical context for West Tennessee. Mining the existing records archived after the closure of Park Field, Tennessee Council of Defense President Rutledge Smith’s papers, and numerous contemporary West Tennessee newspapers helped create this narrative of transition. On a macro level, World War I and the US Army shaped the region. Job creation and population shifts redefined Memphis, as it did many other southern cities in the era. On a micro level, individual stories bring this narrative into stark relief. Soldiers and civilians worked side by side during …

Arctic Militarization: How The United States Developed The Arctic At The Cold War’S Beginning, 1945-1965, Daniel J. Morris
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
At the Cold War’s start, the United States conducted a robust Arctic militarization policy for North American defense against the Soviet Union. U.S. officials feared an Arctic invasion or an over-the-North-Pole attack. The Arctic policies created Alaskan statehood, the distant early warning (DEW) line radar stations, Greenland military installations, failed Arctic diplomacy, the International Geophysical Year of 1957-1958 (IGY), and Arctic military activities. In 1945, the United States started its Arctic militarization programs as its international relationship with the Soviet Union deteriorated. First, Alaska transitioned from a U.S. territory to a state, which federal money entered Alaska for national defense. …

Oliver Wolcott Jr.: A Political Life, John F. Lizzi
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Oliver Wolcott Jr. (1760-1833) was the nation’s second Treasury Secretary and a key figure on the national stage during the Federalist administrations of Presidents George Washington and John Adams. Upon his resignation from the federal government during the Jeffersonian takeover during the Election of 1800, Wolcott prospered for many years as a private citizen. He was later elected Governor of Connecticut, serving for ten years. This project examines his contributions to both national and state government during his nearly forty years of public service. It also evaluates the extent to which he evolved politically during his long career. Wolcott’s success …

Public Memory Through Memorialization, Sophie A. O'Brien
SPARK Symposium Presentations
This research project aims to contextualize the story surrounding various Nashville monuments that memorialize civil rights leaders. This project will explore the history of monuments and road names in Nashville. The history will span from the Confederacy to the civil rights movement and examine how public memory has evolved and changed with the removal of some statues and the changing of road names. It aims to show who we choose to memorialize and why, and how the civil rights leaders we choose to remember reflects public sentiment of the civil rights era.
African American Health Disparities: Nashville’S Efforts To Bridge The Gap, Mary Y. Spence
African American Health Disparities: Nashville’S Efforts To Bridge The Gap, Mary Y. Spence
SPARK Symposium Presentations
African Americans experience significant health disparities, including a shorter life expectancy and high mortality rate. Systemic discrimination, limited access to quality healthcare, and socioeconomic inequalities are believed to be key contributing factors. Another key factor is a historical distrust of the healthcare system as a result of unethical biomedical experiments such as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. A key figure in combating these disparities was Dr. Matthew Walker Sr., a pioneering African American physician whose contributions to medical education and healthcare access helped improve the well-being of underserved populations. Dr. Walker trained numerous Black physicians and established the Matthew Walker Comprehensive …

Researching The U.S. Senate Presidential Nominee Confirmation Process, Bert Chapman
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
The beginning of 2025 has seen renewed public attention and emphasis on the constitutionally mandated U.S. Senate confirmation process. This stems from the beginning of the second Trump Administration as its nominees navigate this process. The presentation provides historical background on this process, demonstrates what nominees, Senate oversight committees, and the full Senate in administering this process and enables readers to find out how to access information resources documenting this process. The confirmation process continues throughout presidential administrations and may involve little public attention and controversy or acute public attention and controversy. The contrasting 2025 confirmation experiences of Secretary of …

Carnival, Ritual, And Race-Thinking In The Bolivian Andes, Ximena Cordova, Adhemar Mercado
All Works
This paper explores the intersection of race, religion, and colonial legacies through the lens of the Oruro Carnival, examining its role in shaping Bolivian identity. Critical religion scholars argue that the entanglement of race and religion is a product of Western modernity and colonialism, which has influenced both historical and contemporary power relations. This framework is applied to analyse the Carnival, where religious practices and festive performances intersect, reflecting colonial efforts at religious conversion and racial categorisation. By focusing on the ethnography of Oruro’s embodied festive practices, this study investigates how the Carnival contributes to the construction of difference amid …
The Forgotten Heroes Of Postman’S Park, John Price
The Forgotten Heroes Of Postman’S Park, John Price
Heroism Science
The Watts Memorial to Heroic Self-Sacrifice in Postman’s Park contains fifty-three memorial tablets, each dedicated to an act of life-risking bravery, undertaken by an otherwise ordinary individual, largely in the course of their everyday life, and within commonplace surroundings. The memorial’s creator, G. F. Watts, was a pivotal figure in the conception and promotion of the idea of ‘everyday’ heroism in Britain. Where he led, others followed. On this basis, the Watts Memorial has come to inform our understanding of how everyday heroism as a concept was constructed. Further research has now identified eighty-four individuals who were intended for commemoration …

Of Cordial Ladies And Independent Women: An Analysis Of The Ceramic Assemblage Of The 19th Century Cooper-Frost-Austin House, Mikayla Roderick
Graduate Masters Theses
This thesis explores the transformation of Susan Austin’s (1807-1885) household in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from a private family home into a boardinghouse, challenging traditional distinctions between domestic and economic spaces. Using feminist and queer theoretical frameworks, it examines how Austin’s decisions blurred public and private boundaries, creating an intimate boardinghouse. Through ceramic analysis of two occupational phases and a documentary examination of the household members over time, this study identifies shifts in material culture that reflect changing household practices, social relationships, and status negotiation. Austin intentionally created an environment where commercial spaces took on a domestic appearance, integrating elements of familiarity …

A Tolerated Terror: Rahmah Bin Jabir And The Age Of Revolutions In The Gulf, 1760-1830, Nicholas P. Roberts
Student Scholarship
Rahmah bin Jabir (c. 1760-1826) is one of the most frequently mentioned persons in British sources from the Gulf in the first decades of the nineteenth century. He is also found throughout important Arabic-language chronicles. Despite his prominence in the sources, however, scholars have paid him relatively little attention, in either English or in Arabic. Though often cast as a pirate, this article argues that Rahmah bin Jabir was a political entrepreneur critical to shaping the international order of the Gulf in the first half of the nineteenth century. Reading against the grain of the colonial archive and synthesizing British …
