Women Homesteaders In Utah, 1869-1934, Jill Thorley Warnick
Women Homesteaders In Utah, 1869-1934, Jill Thorley Warnick
Theses and Dissertations
Much of Utah's history is the story of the relationship of humans and the land. Human perceptions of Utah's land have changed over time and affected the way it has been used. The homestead movement was an important phase in the use of Utah's land. Through federal settlement acts many Utahns obtained title to public land. This study is an attempt to learn more about the relationship between women and the land and about the lives of women in Utah.
The study is based on Utah land records from 1869-1934. Most homesteading activity in Utah took place during this period. …
Southwest Arkansas Local Colorists, Marian Frias
Southwest Arkansas Local Colorists, Marian Frias
Honors Theses
The small town of Washington, Arkansas, which now has a meagre population of 269 once held an important place in history. Early in the nineteenth century, Washington had been a part of the nation's Southwest expansion, for the town lay at the junction of two important national roads. In the 1820's the Chihuahua Road from St. Louis to Mexico served as a mail route and was a major trail to Texas and the Southwest. The Fort Towson Road led from Louisiana through the Oklahoma Indian territory to Fort Smith. During the Mexican War Washington was the mobilization place for the …

Saving The Yellowstone, William L. Lang
Saving The Yellowstone, William L. Lang
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Yellowstone River remains the only major free-flowing stream in the lower 48 states. Defenders of free-flowing status argue that benefits derived from maintaining the historic river surpass those gained through dams. The 1973 Montana Water Use Act placed water allocation in the state's hands, and the 1974 Yellowstone Moratorium gave the state three years to determine the Yellowstone's future. The Montana Fish and Game Department requested maintenance of the instream flow to protect the fisheries and the river, and the state Natural Resources board partially granted the request, thereby preventing dams on the Yellowstone.
Social Science And Segregation Before Brown, Herbert J. Hovenkamp
Social Science And Segregation Before Brown, Herbert J. Hovenkamp

The courts must bear a heavy share of the burden of American racism. An outpouring of historical scholarship on racism and the American law reveals the outrageous and humiliating extent to which American lawyers, judges, and legislators created, perpetuated, and defended racist American institutions. The law is not autonomous, however, particularly in areas of explicit public policy making. Lawyers did not invent racism. Rather they created racist institutions because society was racist and racism was implicit in its values. The trend in scholarship on the legal history of American racism, however, has been to place most of the blame for …
Evolutionary Models In Jurisprudence, Herbert J. Hovenkamp
Evolutionary Models In Jurisprudence, Herbert J. Hovenkamp
All Faculty Scholarship
Few ideas in intellectual history have been so captivating that they have overflowed the discipline from which they came and spilled over into everything else. The theory of evolution is unquestionably one of these. Evolution was an idea so powerful that it seemed obvious when Charles Darwin offered it. After all, there were prominent evolutionists a century before Darwin. Charles Darwin merely presented a model that made the theory plausible. It was a model, though, that infected everything, and one that appeared to answer every question worth asking, no matter what the subject. The model had the potential to lead …

The Star Chamber In Its Last Years, Christine Martine
The Star Chamber In Its Last Years, Christine Martine
Honors Theses
In the course of English history many legal courts have been established and abolished. There were two types of legal courts: common law and prerogative. Commonlaw courts had their basis in fmndamental laws and custom while pre- rogative courts were established by the king's prerogative for different reasons. Most of the prerogative courts were developed during the medieval or early modern period and were abolished during the Stuart reign. One such prerogative court was the Court of the Star Chamber. It can trace its beginnings to the medieval period and was abolished during the reign of Charles I. The Court …

Egypt: The Shifting Cornerstone To The East-West Balance Of Power In 1956, David C. Dalgaard
Egypt: The Shifting Cornerstone To The East-West Balance Of Power In 1956, David C. Dalgaard
Masters Theses
The seizure and subsequent war over the Suez Canal in 1956 is the major theme of this work. The effects on the international situation and world events are analyzed. The major participants, Great Britain under Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden, France under Premier Guy Mollet, Israel under Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, and Egypt under President Gamal Nasser, are developed from their personal aspirations and goals surrounding their actions.
These actions led to the chain of events which disrupted the bipolar balance of world power. The United States' containment policy was breeched. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles did not adequately …
