The Vanguard (Vol. 13, No. 4), June 1966, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

The federal government is not the only agency which chooses to fight aggressively the destructive forces at work in the poverty pockets of our cities. In Kansas City, Faith Lutheran Church had long been serving the Northeast Neighborhood in its direct and straightforward way when, in July of 1965, the newly-created Office of Economic Opportunity decided, upon petition by the church, to devote a portion of its funds to this predominantly Negro, lower-income area of the city. The agreement which enabled this cooperation to take place stated that all clients would be served regardless of religious affiliation, and that all …

The Vanguard (Vol. 13, No. 3), Apr-May 1966, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

For years the vast majority of America's people have backed away from becoming involved in attempts to solve our country's racial problems. Perhaps one reason is the immense and complex nature of these problems. Perhaps they feel there is nothing really that an INDIVIDUAL can do about them.

The Lutheran Human Relations Association of America believes that MANY INDIVIDUALS working away at the problems - in many different places at the same time can achieve much. But it is necessary that there be no postponement. On the strength of such convictions, in cooperation with Valparaiso University, LHRAA has chosen to …

Separation Of Maine From Massachusetts 1785-1820, Ronald Fillmore Banks Jan 1966

Separation Of Maine From Massachusetts 1785-1820, Ronald Fillmore Banks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The movement to separate Maine from Massachusetts commenced in 178£ as an "anticolonial" movement. Led at first by conservatives who desired independence for Maine in order that they could become leaders in the style of their political brethren who led Massachusetts, the movement was eventually taken over by men such as William King, John Holmes, Albion K. Parris, William Pitt Preble, and John Chandler, all of whom formed the leadership of the Jeffersonian- Republicans in Maine.

These leaders of the Republicans of Maine desired independence in order to be freed from the economic and political constraints placed on their activities …

Hermann Hesse And The Notion Of The Ful Entity Of Man In The Literature Of Our Century, Albert Bettex Jan 1966

Hermann Hesse And The Notion Of The Ful Entity Of Man In The Literature Of Our Century, Albert Bettex

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In 1929, four years before Hitler came to power in Germany, C.G. Jung published an essay on "Women in Europe". In this essay the Swiss psychologist , no doubt a shrewd observer, also deals with a few general aspects of the human situation of that time. He discovers tendencies in the minds of many of his contemporaries . First "a growing disgust at one sided attitudes which do not make sense" . He was thinking, among other things, of the increclible chaos of doubtful, dogmatic philosophies of the late 1920's, many of which were offered as promises of salvation to …

Babylon To Zion On Forty-Two Dollars: The Disaster Of The Willie Company And An Evaluation Of The Handcart System, Larry R. Moses

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In 1847, the Mormon Church began a migration to the Great Salt Lake Basin, their Zion in the mountains. This pilgrimage was to continue for over half a century, and out of it was to come one of the truly epic stories of the western settlement. Before leaving Nauvoo, these self-styled, Saints of the modern era pledged themselves to set up a system to transport all of their members to Utah, regardless of their financial status. The vow was renewed at the October 1849 Conference held in Salt Lake City. President Heber C. Kimball, first councilor to Brigham Young, suggested …

The Antislavery Crusade In The Burned-Over District During The 1830'S And 1840'S, Eugenia Henderson Jan 1966

The Antislavery Crusade In The Burned-Over District During The 1830'S And 1840'S, Eugenia Henderson

Honors Theses

Easily affected because of their limited schooling and ultraist religious convictions, the inhabitants of the Burned-over District adopted the abolition crusade in the 1830's with much enthusiasm. Western New Yorkers's emphasis upon emotionalism aided the antislavery leaders. By dynamic preaching that slavery was a great evil, the abolitionists appealed to these people and converted many to the cause. The challenge of the movement especially interested these country folk.5 They could involve themselves in the cause because slavery did not touch the lives of the their neighbors or their family as for example temperance and perfectionism did.6 Slavery seemed …

A Puritan And His Devil : Religious Conflict Between William Prynne And William Laud, 1625-1645, Faye Newton Jan 1966

A Puritan And His Devil : Religious Conflict Between William Prynne And William Laud, 1625-1645, Faye Newton

Honors Theses

In the period between 1625 and 1645, William Prynne "issued nearly a score of tracts," attacking English prelacy in general and William Laud in particular, twice suffered the severest of penalties next to death, endured lengthy imprisonment, and vanquished one of England's most powerful men, all in the name of militant Puritanism. During those twenty years, Prynne's savage but effective pen was directed almost solely to one holy end, the irrevocable defeat of the Laudian interpretation of worship by the English successors of Calvin. For Prynne there could be no thought of compromise. The forces of darkness were at work …

Latitudinarianism From Acontius To Chillingworth, Ann Mccauley Askew Jan 1966

Latitudinarianism From Acontius To Chillingworth, Ann Mccauley Askew

Honors Theses

Increasing strife and disunity developed in religious matters in England after 1600. Simultaneously moderate men became increasingly concerned about the future of unified Christianity. Probably the most systematic and religiously conscious of the solutions offered resulted from the work three dedicated laymen, the Latitudinarians.

The Vanguard (Vol. 13, No. 2), Mar 1966, Lutheran Human Relations Association Of America

The Vanguard

Good Christian people often ask members of the staff of the Lutheran Human Relations Association of America, "What can we do? What can we do to become responsibly involved in the civil rights struggle?" There are many things that can and must be done. A plan that has been in the process of development for a number of years, is what LHRAA has called the Rural Summer Vacation Project. Children from the inner city, mostly from underprivileged homes-Indian American, Negro, Appalachian Mountain, et al-are taken into the homes of "host parents" for one or two weeks in rural, small-town, or …

The Establishment Of The Baptists In England In The Early Part Of The Seventeenth Century, Eugenia Henderson Jan 1966

The Establishment Of The Baptists In England In The Early Part Of The Seventeenth Century, Eugenia Henderson

Honors Theses

In 1558 with the accession of a Protestant Queen on the throne, England had the appearance of religious freedom. Around 1559 Dutch and Flemish dissenters emigrated to England bringing with them Baptist beliefs. Elizabeth's religious policy, however, was not one of toleration. Not being a religious zealot, she desired a workable religious situation. As a result the Elizabethan Settlement was a compromise and came to mean no religious liberty but no inquisition. In 1559 Elizabeth became Supreme Governor of the Anglican Church in the Act of Supremacy. The Act of Uniformity passed in the same year forced the people to …
