Dairy Farms And Agricultural Prosperity In Virginia, 1890-1915, Harold E. Conover Apr 1970

Dairy Farms And Agricultural Prosperity In Virginia, 1890-1915, Harold E. Conover

Honors Theses

In the two-hundred-fifty plus years from the Jamestown landing to the first shots of the Civil War a careless, staple crop agriculture wrought havoc on thousands of acres in Tidewater and Piedmont Virginia. A Virginian looked around him in the Spring of 1859 and was moved to write: "Every county of Virginia from the Seaboard to the head of tidewater now present a standing monument against the ruthless destroyer tobacco, in a wilderness of piney old fields and gullied hillsides..."

Virginia's Dissension Toward The Mexican War, Angela Lilly Apr 1970

Virginia's Dissension Toward The Mexican War, Angela Lilly

Honors Theses

The Mexican War was not a nationally popular war. Dissent came in various forms from opposition to extension of slave territory through the annexation of Texas, to fear of increased Executive power. The majority of dissension in Virginia came from the Whig party as the largest anti- administration faction.

Thus, I trie dto measure popular dissent by examining the "mouthpiece" of this opposition party, the Richmond Daily Whig. In trying to narrow my topic, I chose for the limits of my paper the period from Fall, 1845 to the war declaration of May 11, 1846 and the repercussions immediately following …

Richmond And Virginia In The 1867 Election For A Constitutional Convention, Nelson Lankford Apr 1970

Richmond And Virginia In The 1867 Election For A Constitutional Convention, Nelson Lankford

Honors Theses

The purpose of this paper is to present the reaction of Richmond's conservative white newspapers to the election in October 1867 for a constitutional convention. The three papers include the overtly racist Enquirer, the moderate Whig, and the Dispatch, which claimed a larger circulation than the other papers combined. All three newspapers, however, considered the Negro to be inferior and feared radical reconstruction as the ultimate disaster for Virginia. The press unanimously favored maintaining white supremacy and editorialized for the organization of conservative white opposition to the radical party in the October election.

Fourteenth Century Normans In West Africa, Kaye Louise Centers Mar 1970

Fourteenth Century Normans In West Africa, Kaye Louise Centers

Honors Theses

During the seventeenth century, a legend grew among the French which claims that during the reign of Charles V of France, a group of industrious and daring sailors of Normandy sailed to northwest Africa and then into the unknown waters of West Africa. By 1383 these Normans had reached the Gold Coast and had established a flourishing trade with the people there. This story seems very remarkable because it was not until the mid-fifteenth century that the Portuguese, under the direction and guidance of Prince Henry, ventured for the first time into West African waters and not until 1*4-86 that they …

History Of Local 309, United Steelworkers Of America, Alcoa, Tennessee, Sammy E. Pinkston Mar 1970

History Of Local 309, United Steelworkers Of America, Alcoa, Tennessee, Sammy E. Pinkston

Masters Theses

This thesis is a study of the contributions of Local 309 United Steelworkers of America, Alcoa, Tennessee, to the labor movement of Tennessee and the South. The Local came into being during the early years of the New Deal and it played a significant role in the struggle between the American Federation of Labor and the newly organized Congress of Industrial Organization during the late 1930's. During this period the C.I.O. local was successful in its campaign against the A.F.L. and the independent Aluminum Employees Association, a company-supported organization, to become exclusive bargaining agent for the Alcoa employees.

The American Catholic Press And The Cold War, 1945-1950, Allan Helsel Feb 1970

The American Catholic Press And The Cold War, 1945-1950, Allan Helsel

History ETDs

It is the conclusion of this thesis that the post World War II Catholic press was, to a great extent, responsible for the mass support the extremist politics of Senator Joseph McCarthy received from the American Catholic community. During the years between 1945 and 1950 the American Catholic press met both the domestic and foreign challenges of the Cold War by identifying with the secular symbols of American nationalism. Following its disillusionment with the "one world" political idealism of the immediate post-war period the Catholic press renewed its historical hostility to Communism. And, as the unrelenting pressure of the Cold …

Maham's Tower, Fort Watson And The Southern Campaign Of 1781, James Howard Gump Jan 1970

Maham's Tower, Fort Watson And The Southern Campaign Of 1781, James Howard Gump

History ETDs

In describing the Revolutionary War, historians often neglect many events which have played important roles in the war. Such is the case with Fort Watson, a British post which became the object of conquest by Francois Marion and Henry Lee during the southern campaign of 1781. The method employed in this operation was unique; the consequences of the success which was achieved were crucial. After the victories of the colonist in 1776 at Moore’s Creek Bridge and Fort Sullivan, the southern colonies had been relatively free from British threat until the fall of 1778. Then British eyes turned southward. In …

A History Of The League Of Women Voters Of Indianapolis, Barbara E. Zimmer Jan 1970

A History Of The League Of Women Voters Of Indianapolis, Barbara E. Zimmer

Graduate Thesis Collection

On April 16, 1920, the Woman's Franchise League of Indiana, Indianapolis Branch, voted to disband and to establish a League of Women Voters in its place, carrying the members of the Franchise League on its roster for the first six months. Votes for women, the single purpose for which they, and others like them across the continent, had worked, was certain of accomplishment. The Federal Amendment, granting suffrage to women, had passed the Congress in the previous year and ratification by a sufficient number of states seemed certain.

A Study Of Little Rock School District 1966-1968 Elections And Their Effect On Public School Policy, Ray Earl Garner Jan 1970

A Study Of Little Rock School District 1966-1968 Elections And Their Effect On Public School Policy, Ray Earl Garner

OBU Graduate Theses

For many years, the school elections in Little Rock have followed a traditional pattern of meager voter turnout . School elections, prior to the 1967 election, were mentioned briefly in newspaper articles. The platforms were of the same general nature year after year. They included taxes, school expansion, better facilities, and higher teacher salaries. Candidates seldom, if ever, campaigned publicly and actively. Posters were usually placed throughout the city. A few days prior to the election, newspaper ads with the candidates' pictures would appear in the Arkansas Democrat and the Arkansas Gazette. The 1967 school election was significant, because that …

A History Of The Arkansas Assemblies Of God 1908-1968, Earl R. Teeter Jan 1970

A History Of The Arkansas Assemblies Of God 1908-1968, Earl R. Teeter

OBU Graduate Theses

Religious freedom has played an important role in the nation and state. Because of the freedom guaranteed by the United States Constitution, a colorful array of denominations and sects have arisen. One group, the Pentecostals, have been called the ''Third force in Protestantism." Of this group the Assemblies of God are the largest, not only nationally and world-wide, but also in Arkansas. In fact, the Arkansas District of the Assemblies of God is the largest district per capital of any of the Assemblies of God Districts in the United States.

For some reason a study on the Arkansas Assemblies of …

A History Of The Deseret Alphabet, Larry Ray Wintersteen Jan 1970

A History Of The Deseret Alphabet, Larry Ray Wintersteen

Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the years 1852-1877, introduced to its membership a form of rhetoric (writing system) called the deseret alphabet (phonetic alphabet). This experiment was intended to alleviate the problem of non-communication which was created by the great influx of foreign speaking Saints into the great Salt Lake Valley.
The alphabet was developed and encouraged by the Prophet Brigham Young and a few followers. Much to their dismay the members of the Church did not have the same vision of its workability as did its promoters.
This new alphabet appears not to have met …

Orson Hyde And The Carson Valley Mission, 1855-1857, Albert R. Page Jan 1970

Orson Hyde And The Carson Valley Mission, 1855-1857, Albert R. Page

Theses and Dissertations

The Mormon Church has for years been given credit by historians for the settlement of Carson Valley. Prior to 1854 the LDS Church actually had no connection with that valley except that it was part of the Utah Territory, which the Church controlled. When political dissension against the Mormons developed in Carson Valley, Brigham Young decided to organize the area into a county in 1854. The following year he sent Orson Hyde and other officials there to organize the county government. Within a year Hyde so influenced Young that he agreed to send 250 colonists to Carson Valley in order …

The School Of The Prophets: Its Development And Influence In Utah Territory, John R. Patrick Jan 1970

The School Of The Prophets: Its Development And Influence In Utah Territory, John R. Patrick

Theses and Dissertations

Four separate and distinct Schools of the Prophets were organized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph Smith Jr. organized the first school in the spring of 1833, and it functioned periodically until 1837. Brigham Young organized the second school in December 1867, as a part of the University of the State of Deseret. It functioned until August of 1872 when Brigham Young disbanded it because members failed to adhere to its rules. Three months later he reorganized on a limited basis a third school in Salt Lake City. This school existed until the summer of 1874 …

King Philip's War In Maine, John O. Noble Jr. Jan 1970

King Philip's War In Maine, John O. Noble Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study was made of the Indian war in Maine, which started in the late summer of 1675 and continued until the spring of 1678. The causes and consequences of the war are presented as they relate to the situation on the Northern colonial frontier (Maine), and as they contrast to the war and social situation in southern New England.

The two major campaigns of the war in Maine are examined in detail. Three political questions are discussed as related to the war: (1) the legal control of Maine (2) the support of the war effort by the United Colonies …
