We are writing to inform you about an important policy update. UMaine’s Policy and Procedures on Alleged Misconduct in Research and Other Scholarly Activities (Policy) was last revised in 2006. Application of the Policy in recent years highlighted the need for a comprehensive review. This comprehensive review identified areas where the Policy needed improvement to be more easily understood and administered and in line with current best practices.

Maritime Politics And Policy In The City Of Ships, Christopher Timm, Kelly Page, Catherine Cyr

Maine Policy Review

Along the Kennebec River, over 2,500 vessels were launched in Bath, “The City of Ships,” from the 18th century to the present day. Shipbuilding transformed the town—its economy, global prominence, and architecture. This article examines Bath as a case study of the role of politics and policy in Maine’s maritime history. Shipbuilding positioned Bath at the center of national politics and at the center of the nation’s imperial ambitions, while also heavily influencing its architectural fabric and workforce.

The Maine Indian State Tribal Commission (MITSC) recently published a special report titled, Sea Run, documenting the impact of Colonial and Maine policies and activities on the quality and quantity of tribal fisheries spanning the time from first contact between Europeans and the Wabanaki Nations to today.

Carlisle Indian Boarding School's Role In The Unconstitutional Relationship Between Organized Christianity And The U.S. Federal Government, Kayleigh Hogg

The Carlisle Indian Boarding School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania was the first large Indian boarding school to open in the United States. Carlisle was founded by Richard Henry Pratt and opened in 1879. Carlisle was the first of hundreds of Indian boarding schools that operated throughout the United States and served as the model for many of the schools that followed it. The school was military-run and federally funded until its closure in 1918. The purpose of Carlisle and the rest of the boarding schools was to culturally assimilate American Indians and do so by forcibly removing them from their families. …

Umaine Nanomaterial Pilot Plant Webpage, Center For Research On Sustainable Forests

Opened in 2012, the UMaine Nanomaterial Pilot Plant is a cutting-edge addit ion to the Process Development Center (PDC) at Jenness Hall. The pilot plant was funded through a joint venture with the USDA Forest Service and is the only one of its kind in the country. Constructed in parallel to the Cellulose Nanocrystal Pilot Plant at the Forest Products Lab (FPL) in Madison, Wisconsin, the plant provides samples of biobased nanomaterials for application development.

Community Message About The Passing Of Sharon Barker, Office Of Human Resources

Sharon Barker, a long-time University of Maine employee and tireless advocate for Maine women and girls, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Nov. 20.

Barker became the first director of the UMaine Women’s Resource Center, now called the Intersectional Feminist Resource Center, in 1991. In that role, which she held until her retirement in 2014, Barker mentored countless students, collaborated with faculty and staff and served as a liaison with women’s organizations in the community. Her leadership included developing and facilitating gender equity workshops for girls, offering professional development workshops in gender dynamics for teachers and training UMaine students to serve …

Franco-American newspapers and periodicals occupy an overlapping space between primary and secondary literature, and their shadow looms large over the collective body of historic Franco-American sources. Their significance to the Franco-American community is hard to overstate. These periodical publications complicate issues of identity in the U.S. Northeast and are an integral part of Québec history itself.
