This study examines contemporary Hollywood by focusing on films made between 1990 and 2010. With chapters on the double, war trauma, the undead, and automata, I delineate evidence of the uncanny within individual films along with the underlying contradictions that symptomatically respond to the larger economic conditions and industrial practices that shape the contemporary period. Each of the four chapters also serve as an occasion to analyze theoretical and thematic concerns drawn from Sigmund Freud's 1919 essay on the uncanny. Focused on Brazil’s first horror film, José Mojica Marins’s low-budget production "À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma" (1963), this paper explores how Marins, a marginalized Cinema Novo director, used classical horror conventions as tools for political critique. An analysis of this cinematic landmark reveals that Marins’s homegrown horror intersected with Cinema Novo’s main themes, such as cannibalism, class asymmetries, Hollywood’s influence, rightwing censorship, and national identity. Poignantly self-aware, I argue that this campy horror film in fact worked through seminal tensions besieging Brazilian culture throughout the violent dictatorship years (1964-1985), namely the conflicts between urban and rural spaces, intellectuals and illiterates, …

This qualitative case study considers the weekly congregational Muslim prayers held at an Ontario public middle school and the widespread media and public reaction to them. Drawing primarily from the work of Said (1997, 2003), this research questions how and why the prayers became the source of controversy nearly four years after they commenced, and what, if any, impact this media and public reaction has had on the school community. Eight interviews were conducted, along with a critical analysis of the news coverage of the prayers. Photography and the modern wildlife conservation movement became entwined soon after their shared emergence in the middle of the 19th century. This article analyzes how photography, film, video, and digital imaging have shaped the movement and continue to exert influence. Images often dictate our knowledge of animal species in the wild, but they can be deceptive, and they have hindered as well as helped conservation efforts. The profusion of wildlife conservation imagery and continued politicized debates over appropriate strategies make it important to investigate the conflicted alliance between mechanical reproduction and the conservation movement.

Desire and sex and lust. The conflation of signifiers of sensuality and femininity in female clothing points to a rigorous sexualization of the body beginning in girlhood, through their dress and the way it’s worn. Lace, fishnet, silk, leather, satin, chiffon and latex are shown in their various iterations in children’s fashion. The same materials, fabrics and the words used to describe them host different meanings and associations in adulthood. Yet, somewhere in this liminal divide, childhood and adulthood speak to each other, and the conversation is uncomfortable, like the first time you heard about the birds and the bees.

At the turn of the twentieth century, the figure of the adolescent girl emerged in popular culture, her amorphous specter haunting the American screen. For the next two decades, psychologists, scientists, columnists, and filmmakers would struggle to visualize a figure that was - physically, intellectually, and spiritually - defined by the ephemerality of transformation. Further, shaped by a deep-seeded cultural tradition that equated young femininity with mysticism, the adolescent girl became quickly visualized as a liminal figure, the uncanny mediator between the living and the dead.

An approach to artmaking that is driven by the prospect of chance, by the accidental, is reliant upon the inherent rationale of the natural world. There, chaos constitutes change (or vice versa) and reveals new forms that displace and/or update the old. Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist Clive Holden’s recent practice has manipulated the properties of the natural world into an aesthetic strategy. Utilizing the randomization and dynamism found in nature serves to unsettle and reconfigure his installations, transforming them into ever-evolving media.
