Uncovering The Voice Of Asian American Youth In Young Adult Novels#11;--Korean American Experiences, Ying-Bei Wang Nov 2013

Uncovering The Voice Of Asian American Youth In Young Adult Novels#11;--Korean American Experiences, Ying-Bei Wang

Ying-bei Wang

In America, Young Adult fiction is a popular literature genre embraced by readers of all age. Its contents not only contain an educational purpose for its predominantly young readers but also offer a critical view of social and cultural issues. Most young adult novels narrate stories from the perspective of young protagonists, who are believed to be more candid and more likely to reveal their true experiences and thoughts. The young protagonists also feature a youthful innocence that could function as a powerful voice to criticize the corrupted adult world. This project seeks to understand the Asian American experiences by …

At Home In Estranged Dreams: Contemporary Hollywood And The Uncanny, Kevin Patrick Mcdonald Nov 2013

At Home In Estranged Dreams: Contemporary Hollywood And The Uncanny, Kevin Patrick Mcdonald

Kevin P McDonald

This study examines contemporary Hollywood by focusing on films made between 1990 and 2010. With chapters on the double, war trauma, the undead, and automata, I delineate evidence of the uncanny within individual films along with the underlying contradictions that symptomatically respond to the larger economic conditions and industrial practices that shape the contemporary period. Each of the four chapters also serve as an occasion to analyze theoretical and thematic concerns drawn from Sigmund Freud's 1919 essay on the uncanny. Throughout the project there is a strong effort to link Freud's initial account to subsequent theoretical developments with a particular …

The Politics Media Equation:Exposing Two Faces Of Old Nexus Through Study Of General Elections,Wikileaks And Radia Tapes, Ratnesh Dwivedi Mr

Ratnesh Dwivedi

The important identity of a responsible media is playing an unbiased role in reporting a matter without giving unnecessary hype to attract the attention of the gullible public with the object of making money and money only. After reporting properly the media can educate the public to form their own opinion in the matters of public interest. Throughout the centuries, the world has never existed without information and communication, hence the inexhaustible essence of mass media. The government has the power to either make or reject whatever that will exist within its environment. It also determines how free the mass media …

Performing And Interpreting Identity, Lee Farquhar Oct 2013

Performing And Interpreting Identity, Lee Farquhar

Lee Farquhar

This one-year cyber-ethnography examines  identity presentations and interpretations  of 346 Facebook users. The social–psychological theoretical framework used drew specifically from symbolic interaction, Goffman’s performance of self, and schema theory. Generally, Facebookers sought social acceptance with their presentations. Primary findings indicate that the Facebookers present over-simplified imagery to reduce ambiguity and align with specific social groups. This study asked Facebookers to respond to strangers’ Facebook profiles, and the responses showed that due to the glut of identity-related information on the site, interpretations are heavily reliant on schemas. Online interview participants indicated several basic categories of identity performance that were used to …

The Country Bleeds With A Laugh: Social Criticism Meets Horror Genre In José Mojica Marins’S “At Midnight I’Ll Take Your Soul (1963)”, Diana Anselmo-Sequeira Aug 2013

The Country Bleeds With A Laugh: Social Criticism Meets Horror Genre In José Mojica Marins’S “At Midnight I’Ll Take Your Soul (1963)”, Diana Anselmo-Sequeira

Diana Anselmo-Sequeira

Focused on Brazil’s first horror film, José Mojica Marins’s low-budget production "À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma" (1963), this paper explores how Marins, a marginalized Cinema Novo director, used classical horror conventions as tools for political critique. An analysis of this cinematic landmark reveals that Marins’s homegrown horror intersected with Cinema Novo’s main themes, such as cannibalism, class asymmetries, Hollywood’s influence, rightwing censorship, and national identity. Poignantly self-aware, I argue that this campy horror film in fact worked through seminal tensions besieging Brazilian culture throughout the violent dictatorship years (1964-1985), namely the conflicts between urban and rural spaces, intellectuals and illiterates, …

Moving Beyond The “Mosqueteria:” A Critical Analysis Of The Media’S Coverage Of Religious Accommodation At An Ontario Public School, Aruba Mahmud

Aruba Mahmud

This qualitative case study considers the weekly congregational Muslim prayers held at an Ontario public middle school and the widespread media and public reaction to them. Drawing primarily from the work of Said (1997, 2003), this research questions how and why the prayers became the source of controversy nearly four years after they commenced, and what, if any, impact this media and public reaction has had on the school community. Eight interviews were conducted, along with a critical analysis of the news coverage of the prayers. The results reveal the persistence of post-colonial discourse and prejudice towards Muslims and Islam …

A Cyberconflict Analysis Of The Arab Spring Uprisings, Athina Karatzogianni May 2013

A Cyberconflict Analysis Of The Arab Spring Uprisings, Athina Karatzogianni

Athina Karatzogianni

A cyberconflict perspective on the Arab Spring focuses in the first instance on the environment of cyberconflict. This includes situating the different countries swept by the Arab Spring in the world-systemic, geopolitical and international relations context, and the regional, and national socio-political and economic positions and relationships these countries have historically held. To put it simply then, this addresses the impact of the similarities and differences and identifies the common threads in the diffusion and spread of the uprisings across so many different settings. This is in addition to the obvious social media acceleration, diffusion and transnationalism hypothesis, which is …

Because I Am Not Here, Selected Second Life-Based Art Case Studies. Subjectivity, Autoempathy And Virtual World Aesthetics, Francisco Gerardo Toledo Ramírez May 2013

Because I Am Not Here, Selected Second Life-Based Art Case Studies. Subjectivity, Autoempathy And Virtual World Aesthetics, Francisco Gerardo Toledo Ramírez

Francisco Gerardo Toledo Ramírez

Second Life is a virtual world accessible through the Internet in which users create objects and spaces, and interact socially through 3D avatars. Certain artists use the platform as a medium for art creation, using the aesthetic, spatial, temporal and technological features of SL as raw material. Code and scripts applied to animate and manipulate objects, avatars and spaces are important in this sense. These artists, their avatars and artwork in SL are at the centre of my research questions: what does virtual existence mean and what is its purpose when stemming from aesthetic exchange in SL?

Through a qualitative …

The Attack Of Mystery Science Theater And Moral Imagination (In Color), John Venecek Apr 2013

The Attack Of Mystery Science Theater And Moral Imagination (In Color), John Venecek

John Venecek

This chapter applies the philosophical concept of moral imagination to the movies featured on the TV series, Mystery Science Theater 3000. Moral Imagination is often applied to literature that helps expand our moral compass by encouraging us to consider situations we might not encounter in real life. These works play on complex character relations and themes while simultaneously questioning common beliefs and societal norms. The versatility of a well cultivated imagination helps us think outside the realm of societal norms by encouraging us to consider outside perspectives in a compassionate and contemplative manner. Sometimes, however, our rational responses to …
