Why Did They Emigrate? An Examination Of Five Danish Farming Periodicals During The Period From 1860 To 1900 To Determine What Motivated Farm Laborers To Emigrate., Jette Mackintosh
The Bridge
One question in emigration research has always intrigued me: Why did Peter Jensen find conditions in Denmark so unbearable that he could stand them no longer or why was he so tempted by the prospects on the other side of the Atlantic that he emigrated, while his neighbor, Jens Petersen, who apparently had exactly the same conditions, stayed at home and put up with things? Unfortunately it can probably never be answered satisfactorily. It may be possible to find reasons for some of the emigrations in letters and diaries, but we have no basis for comparison in the form of …
For The Want Of Ten Dollars: The Development Of The Terra Cotta Industry In New Jersey, Thorvald Hansen
For The Want Of Ten Dollars: The Development Of The Terra Cotta Industry In New Jersey, Thorvald Hansen
The Bridge
When the Mathiasens, Karl and his father, left Thisted, on Denmark's northeast Jutland peninsula, for America in 1872, the intention of the elder Mathiasen was to go to Michigan where he had a sister living. When they arrived in New York the father totaled up the funds he had and discovered that the trip thus far had cost more than he expected. He lacked ten dollars of having enough to travel farther west. On the advice of a kindly Dane they walked the few miles to Perth Amboy, New Jersey where they were told they could probably find work. It …
Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen
Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen
The Bridge
On October 8, 1936, The Dannebrog News printed a special issue celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Dannebrog's incorporation as a town. The first Danish immigrants arrived in Howard County in 1871 and founded the settlement of Dannebrog the following year. But it would be another fourteen years before Dannebrog received official status and could establish its first town council. First appearing in 1898, the English-language The Dannebrog News became the longest persevering publication in the Dannebrog area. It was not the town's first, however, as two other newspapers preceded it. In the spring of 1874, an attorney by the name …

Children Of The Spanish Civil War, Claire J. Paolini
SHU Faculty Publications
In the prolific literature about the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the voices of children have remained largely silent and their experiences neglected; yet the lives of thousands of Spanish children were disrupted by the hardships of the long civil war, and their physical, social, moral, and emotional development from childhood to adulthood was complicated by fear, bombings, shocking violence, loneliness, hunger, and the extremes of weather conditions.

New York, one of the thirteen original colonies, had a Dutch-English heritage. Characterized from its inception for religious and ethnic diversity, New York was captured from the Dutch by the English. After reverting back to the Dutch, the colony finally capitulated to the English under generous terms which maintained established commerce. The American Revolution ultimately led to the end of British colonialism for New York and the forming of our independent nation.
The Failure Of Maternal Domesticity: An Evaluation Of Frankenstein As A Didactic Source, Keith R. Swaney
The Failure Of Maternal Domesticity: An Evaluation Of Frankenstein As A Didactic Source, Keith R. Swaney
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
Is man inherently good or evil? Nineteenth century Romantics, inspired by the doctrine of Jean Jacques Rousseau, hypothesized that man is a product of his or her environment. Middle class society imputed the mother as the gateway by which a child learns to become a model human being. This theory held that mothers nurture their offspring naturally. Children learn proper morals and social conduct based upon a female-inspired education. Without this domestic influence on their lives, children fall into the trap of an “eye for an eye” ideology. The monster that Mary Shelley conceives in Frankenstein defies the domestic conception …

And Then There Was One: How The Ruling Styles Of Elizabeth I And Mary, Queen Of Scots Affected The Outcomes Of Their Reigns, Anushia Sivendran
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
In the mid-1500s, England was reeling from its first experience under the rule of a female queen. Mary Tudor had proved to be a ruthless Catholic, a monarch who took every opportunity to persecute Protestants, yet in all other realms of politics, was ineffective. Near the end of her reign, England was torn by religious strife and suffered from a huge government debt.1 England was not to be alleviated of female rule even after Mary died in 1558, as she named her half-sister Elizabeth to succeed her. Not long after, Mary Stuart, the daughter of a French princess, and the …

New Amsterdam, Janet Butler Munch
Publications and Research
New York City was originally called New Amsterdam. Established by the Dutch West India Company as a commercial center for the colony of New Netherlands, New Amsterdam was noted for its religious and ethnic diversity. When England pressed its claim on a virtually defenseless New Amsterdam, Director-General Peter Stuyvesant surrendered and the city was renamed New York in honor of James, Duke of York.

The Victims: Did The Nazi T–4 Euthanasia Program Discriminate Among Victims In The Targeted Groups?, Nancy Unger
The Victims: Did The Nazi T–4 Euthanasia Program Discriminate Among Victims In The Targeted Groups?, Nancy Unger
History
Nancy C. Unger and J. Michael Butler take up the question of the targeting of Jews for elimination in the Holocaust. Was this emphasis a special case or part of a broader spectrum of elimination policies designed to rid Germany of all groups designated as undesirable by Nazi ideology— including homosexuals, Gypsies, and the mentally ill?
Unger argues for the specificity of the targeting of the Jewish population for extermination by comparing it to the case of homosexuals. Homosexual men were incarcerated in the death camps, and many were killed in the course of the Holocaust, but, Unger argues, their …
The Sanctuary Of Apollo Hypoakraios And Imperial Athens, Peter Nulton
The Sanctuary Of Apollo Hypoakraios And Imperial Athens, Peter Nulton
Peter E. Nulton Ph.D.
The Cave Sanctuary of Apollo on the North Slope of the Acropolis at Athens was investigated in 1896-97 and produced a rich collection of inscriptions relating to the cult. These inscriptions are published in full for the first time in this work. The author discusses the history of the cult. Far from being of great antiquity as readers of Euripides' "Ion" have long assumed, the cult was instituted in the time of Augustus when "The Athenians thought it fitting that their archons swear an oath that upheld tradition in connection to Apollo Patroos, but simultaneously honored their 'new Apollo'", the …
