Reading And Writing Race In Ireland, Maureen Reddy Apr 2012

Reading And Writing Race In Ireland, Maureen Reddy

Maureen T. Reddy

In following Henry's education in race matters -- one trajectory of the plot -- the novel foregrounds the many absurdities attending on the tragic history of racism in the U.S. Doyle's interest in race is not in fact new with this novel, which readers of the monthly Metro Eireann would know, as Doyle has been publishing stories centered on race issues in that venue since 2000. This essay examines the first five of those stories, particularily in their relation to emerging discources of race in Ireland.

The Tripled Plot And Center Of Sula, Maureen Reddy Apr 2012

The Tripled Plot And Center Of Sula, Maureen Reddy

Maureen T. Reddy

Critics of Sula frequently comment on the pervasive presence of death, the uses of a particular cultural and historical background, the split or doubled protagonist (Sula/Nel), and the attention to chronology in the novel. However, as far as I am aware, no one has presented a reading of Sula that explores the interrelatedness of these elements; yet it is the connections among them that most usefully reveal the novel's overall thematic patterns. Sula can be, and has been, read as, among other things, a fable, a lesbian novel, a black female bildungsroman, a novel of heroic questing, and an historical …

Foul And Fair Play, Maureen Reddy Apr 2012

Foul And Fair Play, Maureen Reddy

Maureen T. Reddy

The conventions of writing about crime fiction are nearly as codified as those of the genre itself. One powerful convention of such criticism involves drawing ever shifting boundaries between subgenres, with spy thrillers, hard-boiled detective stories, and "cozies," for example, thought to occupy distinct cultural spaces and to attract different readers in search of dissimilar pleasures. Another is to argue either that there is no meaningful distinction between "art" literature and popular fiction, including crime fiction, or that, while there are indeed important differences between crime fiction and literature, some writers of crime fiction transcend the limits of their genre …

The Interplay Between Narrative, Education, And Exposition In An Emerging Science, John Battalio Apr 2012

The Interplay Between Narrative, Education, And Exposition In An Emerging Science, John Battalio

John T. Battalio

Drawing upon eleven volumes of articles published between 1890 and 1990 in The Auk, journal of American ornithology, this study shows the path to professionalization through four phases of ornithological discourse history. In the science of ornithology, the interests of conservationists, science students, and scientists themselves were originally served by a single discourse form— the personal narrative of natural history. But, with professionalization, scientists increasingly associated such narratives with amateur performance. The resulting gap between professional science and public understanding of science was reinforced by the establishment of a university program of study in ornithology, by an emerging sense of …

Extensible Markup Language: How Might It Alter The Software Documentation Process And The Role Of The Technical Communicator?, John Battalio Apr 2012

Extensible Markup Language: How Might It Alter The Software Documentation Process And The Role Of The Technical Communicator?, John Battalio

John T. Battalio

This article describes the influence that Extensible Markup Language (XML) will have on the software documentation process and subsequently on the curricula of advanced undergraduate and master's programs in technical communication. XML, an evolving set of standards for storing and displaying information, uses nine components that make up the XML development process. Grouped into content, formatting, and language specifications, these components enhance organizations' ability to manage information more efficiently and accurately. As the XML development process is adopted, the software documentation process will evolve from a self-contained procedure into a more flexible, interactive process in which software documenters must work …

Where I Am, There (Sh)It Will Be: Queer Presence In Post Modern Horror Films, Melanie Mcdougald Feb 2012

Where I Am, There (Sh)It Will Be: Queer Presence In Post Modern Horror Films, Melanie Mcdougald

Melanie McDougald

This paper will consider the function of queer space and presence in the post modern horror film genre. Beginning with George Romero’s 1968 film Night of the Living Dead and continuing through to contemporary examples of the genre, the paper posits the function of the queer monster or monstrous as integral to and representative of the genre as a whole. The paper analyzes both the current theory and scholarship of the genre and through Lacanian psychoanalytic theory and queer theory offers a theory of how these theories can add to existing theory and scholarship.

Evaluating Applications For An Informal Approach To Information Design: Readers Respond To Three Articles About Nursing, Russell Willerton, Mary Hereford Feb 2012

Evaluating Applications For An Informal Approach To Information Design: Readers Respond To Three Articles About Nursing, Russell Willerton, Mary Hereford

Russell Willerton

Although books in the For Dummies series and other similar series have found commercial success, the approach to information design they use has not received much attention in technical communication journals. This article reports on readers' responses to information presented in the magazine Nursing Made Incredibly Easy! and two other nursing journals. Three groups of readers (two groups of nursing students and one group of nursing faculty members) responded to three articles they read by completing questionnaires and participating in focus groups. Nursing Made Incredibly Easy! was regarded as easy to read and as a good starting point for less-experienced …

Printing Technology In The Hand-Press Era, Mark Mcdayter

Mark McDayter

This portion of The Printer's Devil Project is devoted to an exploration of the material culture and processes involved in the production of printed works in the handpress era (roughly 1475 to 1850), with a particular focus upon the second half of the seventeenth century. Eventually, these pages will address a wide variety of aspects of print production in the period, including papermaking, type creation, printing, binding, and bookselling, as well as provide an introduction to a variety of other aspects of book history relating to the period. Individual pages relating to the mechanics of printing are arranged in a …

Rachel Carson, Karen Stein Dec 2011

Rachel Carson, Karen Stein

Karen F Stein

Rachel Carson is the twentieth century's most significant environmentalist. Her books about the sea blend science and poetry as they invite readers to share her celebration of the ocean's wonders. Silent Spring, her compelling expose of the damage caused by the widespread aerial spraying of persistent organic pesticides such as DDT, opened our eyes to the interconnectedness of all living beings and the ecological systems we inhabit. Carson's work challenges the belief that science and technology can control the natural world. She calls us to rekindle our sense of wonder at nature's power and beauty, and to tread lightly on …

Reproducing The Line: 1970s Innovative Poetry And Socialist-Feminism In The U.K., Samuel Solomon Dec 2011

Reproducing The Line: 1970s Innovative Poetry And Socialist-Feminism In The U.K., Samuel Solomon

Samuel Solomon

This dissertation considers the experimental group of ""Cambridge poets"" in the 1970s and explains how and why their somewhat obscure body of work was a battleground for cultural politics. I focus on the writing of women who bridged Cambridge poetry and socialist-feminist politics even as they worked at the margins of both communities. I argue that this poetry took shape at a unique conjuncture – the history of literary study at Cambridge, the varied British reception of Marxist thought and political action, the rise of Conservatism, and the increasing influence of feminism – that made radical poetics a hotly contested …
