Grit In The Performing Arts: A Mixed-Methods Study Of High School Theatre Student Perceptions Of Grit, Kelsey Gibson

Previous grit research has not yet studied how the performing arts may have an impact on student grit scores and perceptions of grit. Grit is defined by two main characteristics: consistency of interest and perseverance of effort. Continued participation in an extracurricular theatre production requires students to maintain interest and sustain effort throughout the rehearsal and performance period. This study examines the phenomenon of Pilipino Cultural Nights in higher education through the lens of community cultural wealth. While in name, Pilipino Cultural Nights pay homage to the native culture of the Philippines, the processes through which these performances are produced and reproduced as annual traditions exhibit a distinct Filipino American cultural experience that is facilitated by the higher education environment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of adaptive instruction on the developmental rhythm aptitude and rhythm achievement of preschool students with a hearing impairment. Specifically, this study is designed to determine a) if the addition of body percussion and percussive instruments to music instruction affects the developmental rhythm aptitudes of 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children with a hearing impairment and b) if the addition of body percussion and percussive instruments affects the rhythm achievement scores of 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old children with a hearing impairment. This booklet contains a documentation of the project Acting Different which was implemented by Smashing Times and Corrymeela Community/Irish Peace Centres and consisted of a series of drama workshops and seminars conducted on a cross-community and cross-border basis with several groups in the Lisburn and Castlereagh area of Northern Ireland and County Leitrim in the Republic of Ireland. The aim of the project was to use high quality theatre processes to promote peace building and reconciliation. This phenomenological case study explored the lived experiences of performing arts-makers, who participated in the engagement practices utilized in Prometheus Bound, the rock musical produced by the American Repertory Theater in 2011. Engagement practices are actions employed to deepen the impact of the artistic experience, which may involve the creative use of physical space, choreography, physical contact, social justice, community collaboration, and other aspects of a live performance. A common philosophy of administrators and music educators should be prerequisite for a successful music program. This philosophy should permit enough flexibility to allow for individual differences and yet be rigid enough to encompass general education needs and goals. It can only be shared through communication. The place of music within the curriculum will be understood through this communication between the music educator and the chief administrator. It shall be the purpose of this study to encourage the shared philosophy and communication relationship between school music educators and their administrators.
