Magic Fire Goukas And Sentinel Misses The Story - Ben Chapman Obit, Richard C. Crepeau Jul 1993

Magic Fire Goukas And Sentinel Misses The Story - Ben Chapman Obit, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

After a few weeks to digest and contemplate the events surrounding the Orlando Magic, the picture remains partly cloudy. The one thing we know for sure is that the local newspaper completely and totally failed. The Orlando Sentinel has two reporters assigned full time to cover the Orlando Magic, and several of their other reporters and columnists pride themselves on being well connected into the local sports scene. It is interesting then that it was ESPN in Hartford, Connecticut, rather than the local paper which broke the story that Matt Goukas was pushed or jumped up the stairs at One …

It's funny what sticks in your memory. The odd moment, the inconsequential incident, somehow become equal to the moments of high drama. We all know this quirk of the mind.

Chicago Bulls Three-Peat, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

June 20, 1993 will be remembered in sport history as the day that the Chicago Bulls defeated the Phoenix Suns in the American West Arena to win the 1992-93 NBA Championship and a Three-peat. It is only the third time in NBA history a team has won the championship three years in a row.

Sporting Heroes As Role Models, Richard C. Crepeau May 1993

Sporting Heroes As Role Models, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Charles Barkley has been in our face now for several weeks with a commercial for one of those tiresome shoe companies in which he announces: "I am not a role model. I am not paid to be a role model... parents should be role models...I am paid to wreak havoc on a basketball court. Just because I can dunk a basketball doesn't mean I should raise your kids."

Compassionate Capitalism, Richard C. Crepeau May 1993

Compassionate Capitalism, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Compassionate Capitalism. Nice phrase isn't it. It is a phrase used in a recent book title: Compassionate Capitalism: Helping Others Help Themselves. It is also used in the name of a new Foundation: the Compassionate Capitalism Foundation, a nonprofit group based in Muskegon, Michigan. The book and the foundation are the creations of Rich DeVos, he's the boss, of the Orlando Magic.

The Ncaa And The Myth Of Amateurism, Richard C. Crepeau May 1993

The Ncaa And The Myth Of Amateurism, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Just over a week ago Dick Schultz resigned as the Executive Director of the NCAA, a position he has held since 1987. Schultz has been called a leader in the reform of Intercollegiate Athletics and has changed the public image of the NCAA. His resignation was prompted by the fact that the NCAA had found rules violations in the University of Virginia athletic program during the Dick Schultz years as Athletic Director there. Virginia has been placed on two years probation.

Patronage Bibliography (1993), Roger A. Lohmann May 1993

Patronage Bibliography (1993), Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Patronage is one of the basic concepts in the commons theory of voluntary action; it refers to the giving or donating of resources – money, objects for collection, or repertories of knowledge, skills or ‘know-how’. Patrons – those who give – are one of the three fundamental roles in philanthropods, along with intermediaries or agents, and beneficiaries. Patronage is also a heavily studied subject, extensively written about in the humanities as the items in this bibliography attest.

Gretzky, Lemieux, And The Nhl Playoffs, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It's playoff time. In the National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association the second season, the real season, is underway. Every game now has an increased significance, and when you get to the final game of a series there is nothing else like it in sport. When both teams face elimination the level of play is raised to extraordinary heights.

The Death Of Jim Valvano, Richard C. Crepeau May 1993

The Death Of Jim Valvano, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Normally the Catholic Church requires a certain passage of time, as well as evidence of the performance of three miracles, before anyone is presented for canonization to sainthood. Apparently ESPN's standards are not quite that high, as the network canonized Jim Valvano last week following his death. Although Valvano had at least one miracle to his credit, the winning of the 1983 NCAA basketball championship with the miracle shot against Houston as time ran out, it still seems unlikely that he is the stuff out of which saints are made.

Effectively Radiated Powers: The Cultural Impact Of Media On A Kentucky Community, William Drury May 1993

Effectively Radiated Powers: The Cultural Impact Of Media On A Kentucky Community, William Drury

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis chronicles the development of Henderson and its media. Unlike most pioneering towns that sprung up west of the Allegheny and Appalachian Mountains during the 18th century, Henderson assumed a unique position in the development of the Midwest as an important and major tobacco port, as an agricultural conduit to the North and industrial path to the South. and as an outpost of trade to the West. A clearer picture of its aggressive nature becomes evident by tracing the hard-fought beginnings of the region. As Henderson grew in importance, so did its lust grow for excitement and entertainment. Compared …

The Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 1993

The Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over a year and one-half ago a classic American drama unfolded in Channelview, Texas, where Wanda Holloway, 37, was tried for attempted murder. The charge was that Wanda tried to hire a hit man to kill Verna Heath whose daughter Amber was pushing Shanna Holloway, Wanda's little girl, to defeat in the school cheerleading competition. This was a story that touched the hearts of all Americans.

Baseball's Jeremiad, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the past two years baseball writers and commentators have pronounced the death or serious illness of the national pastime. The chorus of complaints has become deafening. To those who know their history this is not a surprise. This sort of jeremiad has marked nearly every decade in baseball history.

Agent Of Absolutism: Printing And Politics In Early Modern Europe, Donna Amelia Vinson Apr 1993

Agent Of Absolutism: Printing And Politics In Early Modern Europe, Donna Amelia Vinson

Bridgewater Review

The fifteenth century marked the commencement of two trends which signaled the end of the medieval era and the dawn of modernity: the emergence of centralized monarchies and the introduction of print culture. Both trends were gradual and in their infancy in the fifteenth century, but their successive paths of development were closely intertwined. Throughout the early modern era, monarchs with aspirations of imposing an absolute and uncontested authority on their often recalcitrant subjects utilized the “new art” (ars nova) of printing to realize their aims. Select printers became agents of absolutism, and the craft developed at the …
