Baseball Negotiation - Movie Review: Tin Cup, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 1996

Baseball Negotiation - Movie Review: Tin Cup, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Oh those wonderful owners. It was just ten days ago that it seemed like baseball was ready for a settlement and a new collective bargaining agreement. Donald Fehr and Randy Levine seemed to have reached an agreement after the owners had given Levine a green light to bargain even on the issue of service time. Then the owners reverted to form and pulled the rug out from under their chief negotiator.

Olympic Games: Bombs, U.S. Women's Soccer, Ethiopian Runners, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Olympic games took one of those nasty, although not totally unexpected twists, Friday night. In Centennial Park a bomb went off and reminded everyone how vulnerable we all are in the modern city. For those killed and wounded it was of course much more than a symbolic event, and for those of us watching this staged pageant from the comfort of our homes it was a reality check.

Sport In Russia And The Power Of The Nba - Wimbledon, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

There is almost a sense that time stops when you leave the country and go off to a place in which the media presence is minimal, and in a language you can neither speak nor read. You get a very good reality check as the obsessions of the world of sport, the daily patterns of wins and losses, the battles over money and egos, all fade quickly to the background.

Representations Of Gender In Juvenile Literature During The Era Of The American Revolution, Sandra Strohhofer Pryor Jul 1996

Representations Of Gender In Juvenile Literature During The Era Of The American Revolution, Sandra Strohhofer Pryor

History Theses & Dissertations

This study investigates representations of gender in fiction during the era of the American Revolution. Literature has an important role in creating and responding to cultural values, as well as in conveying ideologies. Through analysis of fictional stories for children, the simultaneous presence of themes of gender, religion, liberalism, and republicanism will be documented. Children's stories from England were reprinted in America after the Revolution. The continuity between late nineteenth century American success narratives and their early eighteenth century British precursors, as well as their gendered nature, will be demonstrated.

American fiction of the late eighteenth century foreshadowed both the …

The Role Of Plant Foods Among Native Americans In Seventeenth-Century Virginia An Historical And Botanical Study, Timothy W. Cameron Jul 1996

The Role Of Plant Foods Among Native Americans In Seventeenth-Century Virginia An Historical And Botanical Study, Timothy W. Cameron

Institute for the Humanities Theses

Seventeenth-century Powhatan Indians practiced a subsistence economy utilizing plant resources from both the forest and wetland areas of Virginia to maintain adequate nutrition levels throughout the year. They chose not to depend heavily upon maize agriculture, but instead combined marine and animal resources with wild plants according to the seasonal round. Cultigens such as squash, beans, and maize provided dietary sources for only six months of the year; foraged plant foods made up the difference. Primary plant resources included nuts such as acorns, chestnuts, and hickory and the emergent tubers known as tuckahoe. Secondary plant foods, such as starchy seeds, …

Signs, Symbols, And Slave Culture: Representations In Black Thunder, Sandra M. Grayson Jun 1996

Signs, Symbols, And Slave Culture: Representations In Black Thunder, Sandra M. Grayson

Trotter Review

Black Thunder (1936), by Arna Bontemps, is a historical novel that recreates Gabriel Prosser's 1800 slave revolt. This novel is useful in reviewing some of the historical and cultural linkages between Black slaves in the U.S. and African cultures. Thematically, Black Thunder does more than represent Black people's self-assertion through revolt, it also shows their assertion of identity through practicing Atlantic (or western) African traditions, especially those of the Kongo. This is a topic that continues to be significant in light of greater contemporary political and economic linkages between U.S. Blacks and Africans, as well as increasing African immigration into …

Tom Osborne Father Flanagan, And Lawrence Phillips, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The State of Nebraska is not exactly the hub of the universe. In the last half century it has been best known for two things: Father Flanagan's Boys Town and college football. It would seem now that these once separate attractions have been joined together. Tom Osborne, football coach at Nebraska has become the new Father Flanagan. Boys Town has moved from Omaha to Lincoln.

A few years ago a classic American drama unfolded in Channelview, Texas, where Wanda Holloway, 37, was charged with attempted murder. The charge was that Wanda tried to hire a hit man to kill Verna Heath whose daughter Amber was pushing Shanna Holloway, Wanda's little girl, to defeat in the school cheerleading competition. This was a story that touched the hearts of all Americans and is still available on video.

Welfare For Florida's Nba Franchises, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I picked up the newspaper last weekend and saw on the front page under the headline, "New Welfare Era Dawning," two related stories. The first was about welfare reform. Florida's welfare to-work bill was just passed by the State Legislature. The bill will require the 170,000 parents on Florida's welfare rolls to find jobs, and will limit, to four years, the time that anyone can receive medical benefits, subsidies for children, and other dependency-creating luxuries so generously supplied by the state over the years.

Isaac Murphy: A Great Jockey And A Victim Of Segregation In Horse Racing, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Isaac Murphy is not a name commonly known in American Sport, and even among those who follow horse-racing it is not likely to evoke wide recognition. But on this day before the Kentucky Derby it might be worth recalling the career of Isaac Murphy because he was one of the greatest jockeys in the history of the event and one of the greatest jockeys in racing history. Murphy was one of many African-Americans who played a major role in horse-racing in the United States until early in the Twentieth Century when African-Americans were systematically removed from the sport.

What a week this has been. Greg Norman provides us with one of the great collapses of all time. Magic Johnson provides us with shattered glass from his house. While the Orlando Magic both collapse and shatter.
