Baseball Strike Again On The Horizon - Salary Arbitration Still The Key, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Barring an eleventh hour settlement, today will mark the beginning of the fifth strike and eighth work stoppage in major league baseball over the past quarter century. At stake in this struggle is whether or not after twenty years the owners will be able to reverse the power flow into the hands of the players. The rise of the Major League Baseball Players Association under the skillful leadership of Marvin Miller, coupled with some astoundingly inept moves by ownership precipitated a power shift in baseball from management to labor.

When you go off on vacation you feel as if the world stops and nothing of great significance takes place. When you return you quickly reacquaint yourself with the realities, realize that many things did happen of questionable significance, and very quickly you are back into the flow and the cool mountains of New Mexico take on a dreamlike quality.

A few weeks ago Addis and The Sporting News sponsored a symposium in New York City on the issue of job opportunity for minorities in management level positions in sport. One of the participants in the discussion was Bill Rhoden, columnist for The New York Times and The Sporting News. That symposium and several of Bill Rhoden's columns over the past few weeks have reminded me of a number of issues which have been raised in the past few years, but have not been adequately addressed in most professional and intercollegiate sports establishments.

They called it Dream Team II. What was the point? Was it the Dream Team, the Cream Team or the Scream Team? Was this an exercise in the promotion of international relations through basketball, or another instance of Ugly Americanism in the late Imperial Age?

The Colonelette
On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

Fishing Is Not For Me, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Having been born and raised in Minnesota and now having lived nearly thirty years in Florida, I have spent most of my life on this planet in two of the fishingest states in the Union. Florida has almost as many bass fishermen as it does ways of taking money from tourists. Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, although in reality there are over 100,000 lakes in my home state.

Jackie Robinson, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It has been the year to remember the achievements of Jackie Robinson both in and outside of baseball. Robinson's breaking of the color line had a social significance which transcended the game of baseball. At the season opener at Shea Stadium the President of the United States recognized Jackie Robinson, and the Acting Commissioner of Baseball retired Jackie's number for all of major league baseball. Radio and TV programs have examined the events of 1947, social commentators have recalled Robinson's contributions to American life, and baseball historians have paid their tributes to this remarkable man.

After being away from this weekly exercise for over four months I thought I might begin by reviewing some of the most notable stories I missed, such as the atrocity committed by Wayne Huizinga in the wake of his purchase of a World Series winner and his failure to extort a new stadium from the people of Broward or Dade counties.

Henry Norris And The Boleyn Faction: 1528-1536, Jeff Lavender
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This work details primarily the last nine years of the life of Henry Norris, a British court figure during the reign of Henry VIII. His career in Tudor England developed from and through his role in the Privy Chamber, which was a department of court operating in the king’s private suite of rooms. Norris was the most prestigious of the chamber groomsmen who took care of the king’s daily needs and personal care. As chief groomsman or Groom of the Stool, Norris also played a significant part in the distribution of offices through patronage and through his influence with the …

As the locale for one of the oldest continuing cultural, linguistic, and ethnic entities, Iran provides archaeological evidence for dance portrayed on Mesopotamean pottery dated to 5000 BCE (Zoka', 1978). Evidence for continuing choreographic activity is documented in the historical writings of foreigners, from biblical times to ancient Greece to the Persian and Ottoman empires. Iconographic artworks showing dance also exist, such as silver objects from the Sasanian period (224-650 CE) and Persian miniatures from the twelfth century. Iran is, and most likely has always been, a place of immense ethnic and linguistic diversity, a continental crossroad open to influences …
Afghanistan, Anthony Shay
Afghanistan, Anthony Shay
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
A very conservative Islamic country, Afghanistan lies on the eastern edge of the Middle East, to the west of Pakistan and India. Afghanistan is at the confluence of Iranian, Central Asian, and Indian cultural currents, and most groups within Afghanistan have ethnic ties across the borders. Indian elements are the least felt, but the rhythmic footwork of some solo dancing is highly reminiscent of classical Indian traditions. A variety of ethnic and linguistic groups, each with its own choreographic tradition, reflects Afghanistan's enormous cultural diversity. Its dance traditions, however, are scarcely documented. As in most Islamic countries, dancers are paid …
Danse Du Ventre, Anthony Shay
Danse Du Ventre, Anthony Shay
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
Danse du ventre (also called belly dance or danse orientale) most probably derived its name from one or both of two sources: (1) a corruption of the Arabic raqs al-baladi, meaning "dance from the countryside," and (2) a reference to the highly developed movement articulations of the torso and abdomen, which are the most characteristic movement practices of this widespread dance genre. Arabs outside Egypt often call it raqs al-sharq ("Oriental dance") or raqs al-misri ("Egyptian dance"), underscoring the widespread notion that this dance tradition originated in ancient Egypt. No historical documentation exists for the origins of …
Arabian Peninsula, Anthony Shay
Arabian Peninsula, Anthony Shay
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
The regional dances of the vast but sparsely populated peninsula that includes Saudi Arabia, the Gulf states and emirates, and Yemen are--due to political, religious, economic, and other reasons of access--among the least studied. Historically, the gulf region is one of the most ancient marketplaces, with traders from India, Mesopotamia, Africa, and the Arabian hinterland meeting here for centuries. Influences from all these groups may be discerned in the dancing.
Kurdish Dance, Anthony Shay
Kurdish Dance, Anthony Shay
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
The Kurds are a nomadic people whose homeland (Kurdistan) and population (of some 10 million) are now divided among mountainous rural regions of Syria, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Armenia; small numbers live in Israel and the Republic of Georgia, (and a separatist movement is headquartered in Paris, France). They speak an Iranian (a Persian) language, and some believe them to be the descendants of the ancient Medes. Without a state of their own, the Kurds place great importance on such cultural forms and identity markers as dancing.
Lebanon, Anthony Shay
Lebanon, Anthony Shay
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
In many respects, Lebanon is unique among the Arab states of the Middle East, and this uniqueness is reflected in its dance traditions, particularly in the number of professional performances given. Lebanon is a country more urban than rural, although most residents of Beirut, its capital, have some village relations or associations. Because the nation is small, no village is more than a few miles from Beirut or from such urban centers as Sidon or Tripoli. Lebanon's population is highly educated, and nomads (bedouins) account for only a miniscule percentage. The country's many religious groups and sects--mainly Christian and Islamic--seem …

Worrying About The Civil War, Edward L. Ayers
Worrying About The Civil War, Edward L. Ayers
History Faculty Publications
There is no animosity in any of these historical or practical interpretations of the Civil War. It is clear that the North fought for purposes entirely good--for Union and the end of slavery--but Confederate soldiers also win respect for their bravery, their devotion, and their struggle against long odds. They seem to have been playing historical roles for which they are not to blame. The reenactors, the books in stores, and the battlefield tours generally avoid talking about the cause of the war, focusing instead on the common bravery and hardships of soldiers North and South.
