Female Curiosities: Sarah Bernhardt, Rachilde And The Use Of Spectacle In The Gaining Of Fame In Late Nineteenth-Century France, Amy Marie Harris

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the late nineteenth century rapid modernization, the liberalization of the press and theatre, as well as the proliferation of photography brought about the impetus for the development of a celebrity-driven mass media. Two women who would come to fame during this era, Sarah Bernhardt and Rachilde, utilized these innovations to create spectacular public personas which emphasized each woman's idiosyncrasies while confounding notions of gender. With her dramatic performances, extravagant publicity stunts and countless world tours Bernhardt became synonymous with the promise of progress in late-nineteenth century France; while Rachilde utilized the mass media in order to create a bizarre …

They call them revenue streams. You can fish in them but there are no fish to be caught, at least the kind that has gills and fins. Some athletic directors have nightmares in which the streams dry up. Others have dreams in which they discover new streams where no one has fished before. This is the Athletic Director's wet dream.

Jackie And Eddie Robinson, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

This weekend marks the Sixtieth Anniversary of Jackie Robinson's first appearance in major league baseball. It comes at the end of a week in which another Robinson is being mourned across the nation. The tale of the two Robinsons, Jackie and Eddie, is a tale of courage and struggle and the story of how race shapes lives and society in America. It is also a story of gain and loss across the two Americas.

Environment As Social And Literary Constructs: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between The Environment And Mahafaly Oral Literature, Eugenie Cha

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

There was a time, long ago, when a small lake or reservoir had formed in a remote area whose location still remains a mystery today. One day, a king was passing through this region. He desperately needed water and searched and searched, but to no avail. Finally, he found this lake and was able to quench his thirst, and thus prevented himself from dying of dehydration (Avimary).

This story is one of many that are present within the canon of oral literature in Madagascar today. It originated from a small town called Ampanihy, which lies in the southwestern region of …

Urban Renewal, The 15th Ward, The Empire Stateway And The City Of Syracuse, New York, Aaron C. Knight

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Urban renewal programs of the 1950s through 1970s coupled with the connection of older cities to the federal Interstate Highway system during the same time dramatically changed the look of those cities. Syracuse, New York is a perfect example city from which we can examine the impact – good and bad – of these developments and the effects they had.

Syracuse’s projects centered in and near the 15th Ward, a predominantly lower-income neighborhood situated north of the Syracuse University campus and east of Downtown Syracuse. This neighborhood of nearly 3,500 people would fall nearly completely between the different renewal …

Early Days In The Green Movement: A Personal Account, Rosemarie Rowley

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

From someone who from an early age had wanted to be a poet, and whose favourite poet was Wordsworth, it is not difficult to imagine that in some way I would relate to nature as a mature woman. For me it was not the difficulty of being a woman poet which offered the greatest challenge, since my father, a traditional musician, and my aunt who was a songwriter in America had encouraged me to write poetry, but the difficulty was of combining political activism with poetry.

Review Of Castes Of Mind: Colonialism And The Making Of Modern India, By Nicholas B. Dirks, Laxman D. Satya Apr 2007

Review Of Castes Of Mind: Colonialism And The Making Of Modern India, By Nicholas B. Dirks, Laxman D. Satya

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

An anthropologist by training, Dirks employs methodologies from a wide range of disciplines to present a critique of British colonialism and its protégé, the caste system. The author lets both the primary and secondary sources speak for themselves to tell the story of how caste under modern colonial conditions came to acquire the status that it had never enjoyed in India's pre-colonial history. The British colonial state made caste the central pillar of Indian civilization and used it to justify its rule by institutionally generating an enormous body of archival data, to prove the authenticity of caste. So …

Homophobia In Sport, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The last ten days or so has seen a convergence of seemingly unrelated events which illuminate or cast a dark shadow around the subject of gender and sport. The most high profile of these events was the announcement by former NBA player John Amaechi that he is gay, an announcement tied to the release of a book. As it turns out, the revelation is only one occurrence in a cluster of discreet moments related to the topic of gender and sport and sexuality, a subject that is seldom dealt with in a graceful manner in our society.

Super Bowl Excesses, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the past week I have revisited several years of Super Bowl columns. After re-reading each of them three questions have haunted me. What are the greatest moments of the absurd and sleaze kind in the history of the Super Bowl? Is it possible for anything associated with the Super Bowl this year to achieve the lofty heights set by previous Super Bowl Experiences? Is it possible for the Super Bowl to continue to grow in scale as it has done every year for the past forty years? These are the pressing questions that cry out for answers on the …

The Social Construction Of Authorship: An Investigation Of Subjectivity And Rhetorical Authority In The College Writing Classroom, Johannah Rodgers

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Although we use the term author on a daily basis to refer to certain individuals, bodies of work, and systems of ideas, as Michel Foucault and other critics have pointed out, attempting to answer the question “What is an Author?” is by no means a simple proposition. And, starting from the position that there is no single, or definitive answer to this complex question, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the ongoing discussion of the genealogy of authorship by investigating the ways in which conceptions of the author have informed models of the writing subject in the field of rhetoric …

'A Beautiful Dream Realized': John S. Rice And The Seventy-Fifth Anniversary Of The Battle Of Gettysburg, Brian Matthew Jordan

Adams County History

"We have real cause for being proud of our past and the heritage it has given us ... We have a rich past ... along with this heritage we have had thrust upon us a deep responsibility," John S. Rice said in 1959. Indeed, it was the same sense of deep responsibility that had motivated him in anticipation of 1938. That year marked the seventy- fifth anniversary of the cataclysmic, three-day battle that was waged in the fields and farm lanes surrounding the seat of his native Adams County, Pennsylvania. Rice's cognizance of the importance not only of the Battle …
