In her essay, “The Grotesque in Southern Fiction,” Flannery O’Connor notes, “Whenever I’m asked why Southern writers particularly have a penchant for writing about freaks, I say it is because we are still able to recognize one” (44). In the introduction to this collection, I investigate the importance of the grotesque, gothic, and surreal elements that tend to make up the depictions of the South in the works of authors such as Flannery O’Connor and Brad Watson and several horror writers, such as Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, and H.P. Lovecraft, exploring how horror can be used to emphasize the …
Where The Animals Sleep At Night, Meghan Reed
Where The Animals Sleep At Night, Meghan Reed
Theses and Dissertations
When the world is full of so much fear and worry, pain and tragedy, we need new ways to work through our own personal loss; we need new ways to heal. It is my opinion that stories are meant to heal, to make us feel and take us to a better place. Stories offer understanding, a good laugh, a way to move forward, they thrill us, make us cry, show us love, or scare us into momentary elation. My creative thesis will be a collection of short fiction that employs elements of literary realism and magical realism to explore the …
A Tedious Oscillation Between Heartfelt Knowledge And Tears: A Metamodern Essay On Bo Burnham’S Work, Josh Denzel C. Ng
A Tedious Oscillation Between Heartfelt Knowledge And Tears: A Metamodern Essay On Bo Burnham’S Work, Josh Denzel C. Ng
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Ever since the late 1900s until the early 2000s, philosophers such as Linda Hutcheon declared the death of the postmodern senses and looked ahead to a new generation of intellectuals to provide a heading and analysis for what was still a new concept. David Wallace perceived that literature had to shift away from irony and postmodern deception to recover a forgotten referentiality and essentialism. He introduced the notion of using sincerity and honesty, which conform to the beliefs of transcendentalism. Successively, this gave rise to the birth of the idea of New Sincerity commonly defined as an oscillation between irony …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
This study summarizes the stigma and discrimination being experienced by young adults and acknowledges areas wherein research is needed to identify the factors that contribute to this matter. The following questions are addressed: (1) What kind of stigma and discrimination do these teenagers with depression and/or an anxiety disorder experience? (2) How can the stigma and discrimination of mental illness be portrayed through the particularities of the narrative profile? (3) What techniques will be used for the narrative profile that may effectively portray lived experiences and raise awareness? A collection of narrative profile essays was established for this research for …
Void, Jaycylle Kayne A. Soto
Void, Jaycylle Kayne A. Soto
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
The main driving force of the author to write the collection of flash fictions "Void" is to express people's different representations of feeling void. From the void we feel inside to the one that others make us feel. The goal of this collection is to let the readers know that they are not alone in feeling this kind of void represented in each literary piece. Moreover, this collection also includes unsettled and unsolved personal, family, and societal issues people of different classes and lifestyles may face and that creates a drastic change in an individual’s way of living. Throughout the …

(G)Olden Days: A Photopoetry E-Book About The Lived Experiences Of A Female Filipino Widowed Elderly During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jada Antonette M. Medroso, Rachel Maegan D. Ramos
DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
This study aims to create a photopoetry e-book about the lived experiences of being a widowed elderly in the COVID-19 pandemic, and to also answer the primary question: “How can photopoetry be used to convey both social awareness and hope in showing the lived experiences of a Filipino widowed elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic?” To help the researchers achieve their objectives, they related it to theories such as Marxism which explained that because of the unjust system, the elderly are forced to live through inequality and prejudice, and the Ethics of Care theory's explanation of the selfless desire to help …
“But For Those Of Us Who Live Here”: Performance Of Work And Community By Women Employed In Rural, Predominantly White, Small-Town Schools, Telena M. Turner
“But For Those Of Us Who Live Here”: Performance Of Work And Community By Women Employed In Rural, Predominantly White, Small-Town Schools, Telena M. Turner
Masters Theses, 2020-current
Rural, small towns are incredibly complex cultural centers. Although rural places are consistently portrayed as unchanging, the operation of cultural and identity within these locations is consistently on the move. Using reflexive interviewing, poetic transcription, autoethnographic writing, this project (re)presents poems on community and identity from five women employed in schools in rural, mostly White, small towns in the Central Appalachian region. Analyzing the poems through concepts in performance studies and work on space and place, this project positions movement and change at the center of small towns and examines how notions of rural place and community are performed through …
Department Of Longing, Anthony Gabriel Coffman
Department Of Longing, Anthony Gabriel Coffman
Theses and Dissertations
Many have chosen to divide the world of fiction into literary and genre. I do not believe these have to be mutually exclusive. Writers such as Shirley Jackson, Stephen King, and Benjamin Percy note the importance of literary devices while simultaneously creating plots that elicit emotional responses from readers. It is my goal to accomplish the same, and bridge the gap between literary and genre fiction in my collection of short stories by using symbolism and imagery to create a sense of the foreboding.

“Between the bitter and the sweet”: longing and intimacy in Sappho’s and June Jordan’s love poems.
June Jordan (1936 - 2002), Jamaican-American poet, activist and educator is most known for her political poetry while the breadth of her work spans many themes. At the core of her work, she writes with a lyrical genius that shows her readers how important it is to see the core human emotions of longing and intimacy through the personal “I.” This essay draws the lines between the breadth of contemporary poet Jordan’s love poetry and the fragments of the originator of the love lyric: …
Batter: A Creative Writing Portfolio, Hannah Newman
Batter: A Creative Writing Portfolio, Hannah Newman
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
My capstone project, Batter, is a collection of creative writing pieces, consisting of short stories, flash fiction, and two creative nonfiction essays. I decided to do a portfolio because creative writing is simply what I enjoy the most and have been intrigued by since I took my first fiction writing class at Kennesaw State University. Composing stories, imagining how characters could behave believably, their problems and their solutions, all of it combined gives me a sense of creative determination that I have not found in any other area of work or craft. I believe I’ve been rather lucky because working …
