Issue 3 of the Clark Student Voices Literary Magazine, published in the Spring 2024 semester. The theme of the issue is 'Serendipity'. A semesterly publication curated by Clark University students, CSVLM creates space for students to share their creative writing including poetry, prose, and artwork. This issue of Illuminations includes personal pieces and pieces from classes. There was a recurring theme of observation and self identity throughout many of the pieces in this issue of Illuminations—the idea that observation is an interactive practice—the idea that observation is a creative practice. This is a series of autobiographical poems that delve into the role the audience plays in an individual's gender performance and how that can be helpful and harmful to identity, depending on the person performing and the people watching the performance. The concept of gender as a theatrical performance, the basis for many of the poems, is derived from the work of gender and queer theorists Judith Butler and Jack Halberstam. Twisted Threads: A Novel and Exploration of Fraternity Culture and Race is a project that seeks to explore questions about race and brotherhood through the lens of the urban fantasy genre. It is the first ten chapters of a full-length fantasy novel and can be considered the first half of the planned novel. The Introduction details some of my influences, both literary and cultural, as well as the thought process behind much of the worldbuilding in my manuscript.
