Neighbors, Helen Borriello Jan 1975

Neighbors, Helen Borriello

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Sarah and Pa had been up there just a week before. It was a run-down old house that hadn't been lived in since Mrs. Blackert died eleven years before. The wild blackberries grew clear up to the front door, but around to the back of the house the daffodils had gone wild and covered the whole yard including the path that led to the outhouse. Sarah thought they looked like melted, fresh-churned butter and told Pa so, but he pulled her braids and said no, the field looked like …

Stages, Jim Cole

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"I took a bus to her city on a Sunday. Travelers are sparse on Sunday and for once I didn't end up next to a wino. The trip itself wasn't bad. I like moving towards places. She was waiting at the bus station. She looked much smaller than the last time I saw her or at least as I remembered her. We kissed, I put my arm around her, and her hand squeezed my hip reassuringly. Things were starting right."

Revelations, Sandra Rizzo Jan 1975

Revelations, Sandra Rizzo

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The trolley runs past the white stucco buildings, past the beautiful tailored gardens, into the heartbeat of the city. Parades march through the street trailing hundreds of black bouncing bodies. There is dancing in Bourbon Street on Mardi Gras."

Audience In The Mirror, John H. Liddle Jan 1975

Audience In The Mirror, John H. Liddle

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The apartment was on the other side of Maple Street and by now Jim would be sitting at the window. That neighborhood was a barren place, a flophouse for second-hand cars. A block away stood their brick apartment building; the only other buildings on the street were a high school of grey brick, a Colonel Sanders, a National Ambulance, and a green metal shed with blind windows. The rest of the block had been razed and sown with asphalt. As Violet walked past the high school, she quickened her …

Such A Good Woman, Lida Bell Lunt Jan 1975

Such A Good Woman, Lida Bell Lunt

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Lottie's Market Basket was more than a grocery store. A meeting place, a wailing wall, a place to borrow, Lottie was always there, the good listener with an open purse. She knew all the gossip and called all the local politicians by their first names so she could, when the occasion arose, do you a favor. Campaign posters plastered the store windows and every charity drive was represented. After school, children pressed against the candy counter and found their pennies garnered more than at any other store. When the …

My Other Sister, Philip Livingston

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"I know it's my fault, but if it wasn't for my dumb other sister Julie and stupid Matt Hayney it never would have happened. Julie's sixteen and because I'm thirteen she thinks it's all right to say I'm a sissy because I don't smoke or because I don't sleep with my mouth open on the school bus like her boyfriend Harry does. She teases me, too, because sometimes I get nervous when people make fun of me and once I had to go to the doctor about it. Even …

Homecoming, Ronald Langlois Jan 1975

Homecoming, Ronald Langlois

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The couple stood on the top deck of the ferry boat across the Messina Straits. On this hot August day, there were several other people, mostly Sicilians, returning from holiday trips in Southern Italy, looking across to where Messina stretched along the shore. The hills beyond the city were very lovely; green, mound-shaped and not at all jagged. The ferry ride took nearly an hour, and there was plenty of time for the people to get out of their automobiles and the train cars from Rome to come up …

The Composite Art Of Blake's "Laughing Song", William Robert Warner Jan 1975

The Composite Art Of Blake's "Laughing Song", William Robert Warner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the past five years, the literary critics have discovered William Blake, helping readers to understand clearly the various stages of development and the final form of the poet's entire mythology. And recent criticism has also clarified and expressed more systematically than earlier criticism certain features of Blake's total thought. Nevertheless, much recent criticism has hindered rather than helped the serious student of Blake's poetry.] Most critics treat Blake's poems as if they were only literary, completely avoiding discussion of their visual components. Yet, Blake clearly envisioned and intended that his reader view the poetry as a new form consisting …

Who Thought Birds Sang, Brian Lever Jan 1975

Who Thought Birds Sang, Brian Lever

Research outputs pre 2011

This is the first publication of poetry written by students at the College. A majority of the poems were produced by members of an elective group who at times wrote on similar topics. Some of the poems in this category have overtones of the 'set piece', although the approaches employed are quite different. Fortunately, this reservation applies to very few of the poems selected for inclusion by the group...

The Imprisoned, Jill Deasy Jan 1975

The Imprisoned, Jill Deasy

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"The seven o'clock whistle shrilled just as he turned to race up the next flight of stairs. Manny swore and slid through a puddle of spilled coffee on the landing. Dull green factory walls, dismal grey factory stairs, dirty factory floors - he cursed them all. He lost his footing and banged his shin on the next step as he fell. It hurt like hell but he picked himself up and half-walked, half-hopped up the next two flights. Another bad day - and it had barely begun."
