Living Reflections, Lorane Leavy Oct 1985

Living Reflections, Lorane Leavy

Institute for the Humanities Theses

The following works fall into three general categories--non-fiction, fiction, and the psychological analysis of this prose.

Three styles of non-fiction are represented: Creative non-fiction in which the events from a life experience are set forth in a narrative style; magazine journalism which incorporates the research, interviewing skills and informal yet accurate representation attendant to the genre; and a combination of reportorial journalism and the essay forms utilized to recount appropriately a highly personal event while maintaining the· distance necessary to inform and educate.

The short story meets the criteria for form and time frame and addresses a current issue.

"Only She Who Says She Did Not Choose, Is The Loser In The End." The Significance Of Conscious Choice: Four Original Stories, Ellen C. Barclay

English Theses & Dissertations

In the following collection of short stories, I examine some of the ways people face the decisions that affect their lives. In "Smoke Signals" and "Thin Ice," the protagonists make decisions that allow them to change and grow. The protagonist of "Postcard From L.A." makes a conscious decision to change, but that change will not lead to personal growth. In the final story, "Honeymoon in the Great Rift Valley, the protagonist chooses against changing her situation, even though she is aware this decision will inhibit her growth.

In all of these stories, negative emotions provide the catalyst for change and …

A Journey Inward : Initiation In Katherine Anne Porter's Miranda Stories, Anne Lobdell Sep 1985

A Journey Inward : Initiation In Katherine Anne Porter's Miranda Stories, Anne Lobdell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Tracing the initiation motif in Katharine Anne Porter's "Miranda stories" uncovers her maturing protagonist's search for order and personal truth. Miranda's inward journey ultimately leads not to nihilism and despair, as some critics suggest, but to an honest and courageous affirmation of the independent spirit.

Porter's fiction involving Miranda and her family background reveal varying stages of this maturing that, together with parallel theories of initiation, fall into critic Mordecai Marcus' paradigm of initiation types. The "tentative" initiation stories only brush the child Miranda's awareness and deal primarily with the external world. They include "The Circus," marking an "emotional" initiation …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

The man who created the child-spies of 1984, JONATHAN ROSE makes clear in his examination of George Orwell, was a writer filled with nostalgia for childhood. Assistant Professor of History at Drew University in New Jersey, Rose has recently completed a book-length manuscript on the intellectual history of Edwardian Britain and hopes to launch a scholarly journal devoted to the life and works of George Orwell.

Though current society has distanced them from us, the women of Edwardian problem plays, argues SUSAN L. CARLSON, do have something to tell us about our own social …

Promotion Of Critical And Creative Thinking Skills Through The Teaching Of Poetry, Maura H. Albert May 1985

Promotion Of Critical And Creative Thinking Skills Through The Teaching Of Poetry, Maura H. Albert

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This curriculum project has developed gradually over the past fourteen years during which time I have been teaching in the public elementary schools. I have always loved poetry; therefore it seemed natural to make the reading of poetry a standard part of my curriculum even in my first years of teaching. As the years went by and my own increasing enjoyment in reading poetry was coupled with and encouraged by the positive reactions of the children I taught, it seemed only natural not only to read more poetry in the classroom, but, also, to begin to do some exploration of …
