Beetle Wings And Other Savory Tidbits, Krystyna Rozanski Stefansky Oct 1989

Beetle Wings And Other Savory Tidbits, Krystyna Rozanski Stefansky

English Theses & Dissertations

Journalism is not a field in which facts must always be written black on white, opinion deleted. As a writer, largely of features, rather than what editors in my profession call "hard news," I particularly like writing the personal column.

In those 14 inches I can explore issues of the day, take a closer look at my life, family and neighbors, The looks are at some times more thoughtful than at others. Some topics are meant merely to entertain. Others to fuel discussion. All are meant to be gentle examinations of the truth, the tidbits of life that keep all …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

JACK D'AMICO explores the politics of madness and the madness of politics through the character of Junius Brutus and his incarnations in Machiavelli and Shakespeare. Presently Associate Professor of English at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, D'Amico has written extensively on English and Italian Renaissance literature, particularly on theater and Machiavelli.

The Greek and Roman epics and tragedies, MARGARET J. DOWNES observes, present us with the purposes and consequences of death in order to focus on the implications and responsibilities of life. Author of scholarly works on William Blake, classical literature and culture, film, …

Pet Rock, July A. Jolly Jul 1989

Pet Rock, July A. Jolly

English Theses & Dissertations

This book is an attempt to re-create the essence of what life was like for an American family living in Zambia during the early 197Os. While it must be acknowledged that Pet Rock is semi-autobiographical--after all, my family, like the Petersons, lived in Zambia, and I, like Carrie, was sent away to the United States for school--the events dramatized are nevertheless completely imaginary, as are the characters involved. Even Carrie, who grew directly out of my own emotional remembrance, is not really me. And yet, although it doesn't tell "what actually happened," Pet Rock allows the reader to experience what …

The Happy Accident, Robert Manning Jun 1989

The Happy Accident, Robert Manning

New England Journal of Public Policy

In "The Happy Accident," Robert Manning's delightful memoir of his early newspaper days in Binghamton, New York, we are brought back to an earlier and seemingly more innocent time when New England — and America — stood on the threshold of change. The moral of going home, it seems, is that as much changes, much never changes — something we should perhaps remember in these last feverish days of the nineteen eighties.

The Epic Of Ezra Pound: A Modern Poet's Quest In China's Antiquity, Sun Hong May 1989

The Epic Of Ezra Pound: A Modern Poet's Quest In China's Antiquity, Sun Hong

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although the influence of the Chinese culture on Ezra Pound has long been recognized in the study of his Cantos, the question of whether his work should be regarded as a "transmission" or an "invention" requires a more substantial consideration of both his work and the Chinese tradition. This thesis attempts to supply an evidence to T. s. Eliot's answer to the question about Pound's status regarding the Chinese culture--namely, that Pound was "the inventor of the Chinese poetry for our times." To do so three features of the Cantos are considered: the philosophy of Confucius, particularly the text Da …

Points Of Interest: Essays On People, Places And Perceptions, Sara-Lois Bachert Apr 1989

Points Of Interest: Essays On People, Places And Perceptions, Sara-Lois Bachert

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

I wrote my first story in third grade. “Francine and the Head-Chopper Man” borrowed its plot from “Beauty and the Beast,” but my teacher didn’t seem to mind. In fact, she arranged for me to read the story to the fifth-grade class down the hall. After that first public reading, I was hooked. I knew at age seven I was going to be a writer.

When I discovered journalism in the ninth grade, I knew just what type of writing I was going to do. In junior high and high school, I was editor of the newspapers, and in college …

River People, Ruth Madden

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In the introduction to The World of the Short Story, Kay Boyle challenges the short story writer "to invest a brief sequence of events with reverberating human significance by means of style, selection and ordering of detail, and -- most important -- to present the whole action in such a way that it is at once a parable and a slice of life, at once symbolic and real, both a valid picture of some phase of experience, and a sudden illumination of one of the perennial moral and psychological paradoxes which lie at the heart of la condition humaine." …
