ABSTRACT

Growing up in a dysfunctional home with few supportive resources was my inspiration for writing this creative non-fiction work. The goal for Locura Progeny is to connect with people who have had a similar upbringing but felt compelled to not talk about it due the stigma it carries. I wrote this work in first person using a chronological timeline similar to an episodic novel. Each chapter is an important event or memory in my life that shaped my views on my future self and the key people in my life. This story is impossible to tell without focusing on …

El proyecto tuvo su origen en una revista que combinaba textos poéticos, dibujos y collages. A partir de la separación de los poemas de sus imágenes originales, surgió una reflexión sobre cómo sostener la fuerza poética a través del uso del espacio en blanco como elemento significativo. A change of life baby, Liz was born to poor, middle-aged Mexican American parents who didn't want the same things in life that she wanted. Generational trauma, internalized racism, and family dysfunction permeated her psyche and crippled her self-worth sending her into the fantasy worlds she created in her head. She managed to escape her family through marriage at nineteen years old, quickly realizing she had traded family dysfunction for marital dysfunction. Motherhood has become a highly politicized and dominant topic in public discourse, with it often being a beacon of good-will and the building block of feminine identity. Lindal Buchanan’s Rhetorics of Motherhood demonstrates how motherhood has been used by all types of political ideologies to make women more palpable in public spaces. Miranda July’s All Fours explores an identity shift in an aging mother. In my collection, I explore these different identities and facets of motherhood and what that looks like for characters who struggle with infertility, loss, and addiction. In childhood, literature is a quintessential learning tool, so it is imperative it is used in the introduction of mental health. Around the ages of seven to nine children begin to become aware of their own needs and comprehend others' perspectives (Short et al., 2017, p. 13). At this time non-fiction books can be used to present information when it is organized, accessible, and informative (Short et al., 2017, p. 13).
